They pray Jumu’ah in the workplace and do not go to the mosque

We are a group of employees of Saudi Aramco, working in the Italian city of Milan on a work mission that will take approximately one year. We offer some of the prayers in a room in the workplace that has been set up as a prayer-room for us. Some of the group decided to gather in this room for Friday prayer (Jumu’ah) where one of them will deliver the khutbah.

Their basis for doing this is that praying Jumu’ah in this room saves time instead of going to the mosques in and around Milan, and holding Jumu’ah prayers in this mosque will encourage some of us who are too lazy to go and pray Jumu’ah in the mosques of Milan. Some of us decided not to pray Jumu’ah in this prayer-room, because we are not sure whether doing so is permissible, as one of the mosques is only ten minutes away by car and another mosque is twenty minutes away, and a third mosque is half an hour away by car.

We are divided, some of us pray Jumu’ah in this prayer-room and some of us pray in the mosques in and around Milan. We hope that you can advise us of the ruling on praying in the office prayer-room.

Praise be to Allaah. Firstly:  If a traveller intends to stay in a place for more than four days, then he comes under the same ruling as a resident and he must offer the prayers in full from the moment he enters the city, and he must attend Jumu’ah prayer when the call for it ... Continue Reading

Is it permissible to pray in a room where there is a television that is on?

Is it permissible to pray in a room when there is someone else in the same room who is watching television, if that person is watching it at a low volume and the program being shown does not contain anything but people who are dressed decently?.

Praise be to Allah. It is makrooh to pray in a place where the worshipper will be distracted from his prayer. And undoubtedly the television is one of the greatest distractions to people; if a man prays in a place where the television is on, it will undoubtedly distract him even if the volume ... Tucking up the hair at the time of prayer

In fatwa no. 141473 you mentioned in detail that prayer is not valid with the hair tied back. Does this apply to women too? Is it permissible for a woman to pray with her hair tucked up or tied back? I hope that you can give the evidence in detail because some scholars here in Pakistan say that that is not permissible.
Praise be to Allaah. Firstly: In the answers to questions no. 96280 and 163428 we stated that it is makrooh for a man to pray with his hair tucked up, which means that he gathers his hair together and ties it back, thus preventing it from prostrating with him. The prohibition in this case ... Continue Reading

How should a surgeon pray?

I read your answer about prayer whilst doing surgery or afterwards. I work as a doctor and the day is very short in Canada during the winter; Maghrib comes at 5 p.m. Hence the time between the prayers is very short and I do not know how the surgeon can do his work when this time is very short. Hence I think it is better to make the prayers up afterwards. What is your opinion on that?

Praise be to Allaah.   It is obligatory to offer the prayers on time as enjoined by Allah, may He be exalted, and it is not permissible to delay them except in the case of an excuse that make it permissible to put prayers together. Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the ... Continue Reading

When is it permissible for a person to pray sitting in obligatory prayers?

In order for a person to be allowed to sit during the obligatory prayers, is it essential that he should be completely unable to stand? Or is it also permissible for a person who is able to stand, but it is possible that it may lead to harm? What is the definition of the inability that makes it permissible to sit during the prayer and not stand, without that incurring sin or punishment?.

Praise be to Allaah. Firstly:   Standing during prayer is an obligatory pillar which cannot be omitted. It is not permissible for anyone to pray sitting unless he is unable to stand, or standing is very difficult for him, or he is sick and there is the fear that his sickness may become ... The way in which women pray is the same as the way in which men pray

Would u please tell me the proper way for women to sit, when we pray, also can you please differenciate the sitting position, from men.

Praise be to Allaah.   The way in which women pray is the same as the way in which men pray in every part of the prayer, prostration, sitting, and so on. This is based on the following evidence:  1 – The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Pray as ... Continue Reading

The proper way to make du’aa’ during prayer

I would like to know the proper way to make du’aa’ during prayer, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did it. Is it after the prayer or between the two prostrations or whilst standing or when?.

Praise be to Allaah.   Firstly:  Note that there is not one particular part of the prayer when du’aa’ should be offered, rather there are several parts of the prayer where the scholars have stated that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) ... Continue Reading

Wishing for death because of intense distress

I have great problems in my work and in my social life. Is it permissible for me to wish for death?
Praise be to Allaah. Your state is like that described by the poet:“If death were for sale I would buy it.This life is something in which there is nothing good.” This is wrong. It is not permissible for the believer to wish for death. If he has to say something, then let him ... Continue Reading
