The meaning of al-Rahman & al-Rahim

What is the difference in meaning between Allah's names al-Rahman and al-Rahim?

Sheikh Salman al-Oadah   The name al-Rahmân, like the name Allah, is used only for Allah. No one else may be called by this name. Allah and al-Rahmân are His exclusive names. This is why Allah says: “Call upon Allah or call upon al-Rahmân; by whichever name you ... Continue Reading

Definition and Ruling on Gheebah (Backbiting)

What is the definition of gheebah and what is the ruling on it?

Praise be to Allah.Gheebah (backbiting, gossip) means that a person mentions the faults of his Muslim brother in his absence, which he would not like if he heard about it, when there is no need to mention them. When I say "mentions the faults of his brother", this excludes cases when ... Sleep paralysis is not a Jinn attack

Our daughter is having strange experiences during sleep. She complains of feeling something pressing down on her chest which paralyzes her entire body. She cannot even speak. This stops and starts throughout the night. It happens so frequently that she has become depressed and angry. We feel that this is an attack from the Jinn and we want to know what she can do about it.

The Scientific Research Committee - IslamToday.net   These symptoms should not be construed as an attack from the Jinn. This is a very common problem. It is a condition known as sleep paralysis (SP). Sleep paralysis is defined as a condition in which someone, usually lying in a supine ... Continue Reading

The concept of monotheism in Islam

I am doing research on the concept of monotheism in the world's five major religions. Could you please explain to me the concept of monotheism in Islam?

The Fatwa Department Research Committee - chaired by Sheikh `Abd al-Wahhâb al-TurayrîMonotheism is the message that all of the Prophets came with. People then deviated from the truth. Then Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came as the final Messenger and restored true monotheism to ... Continue Reading

The virtues of Jumu'ah (Friday) prayer

I would like to know some of the ahaadith which speak of the virtues of Jumu'ah prayer.

Praise be to Allah.  Many ahaadith have been narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) which explain the virtues of Jumu'ah prayer. For example: 1. Muslim [233] narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ... Continue Reading

Allah and the pronoun 'He'

Why is Allah always reffered as 'He'? I ask this because my teacher in class raised this issue.

The Fatwa Department Research Committee - chaired by Sheikh `Abd al-Wahhâb al-Turayrî Allah says: “He created the pairs, male and female.” [Sûrah al-Najm: 45]Allah is the Creator of both sexes. We do not attribute being male or being female to Allah. We only ... Continue Reading

Ruling on dealing with mortgages in a non-Muslim country

Perhaps my question has been asked many times before. It is about mortgages in non-Muslim countries. We live in a western society and we live in rented accommodation so as to avoid riba. Recently we found out that there are no houses for rent, and 96% of the market is based on mortgages. All houses are offered for sale only. Some of them told me that in this situation it is permissible for me to  buy a house by means of a mortgage and, moreover, it is possible to get the mortgage in the name of family insurance, so that the individual does not pay riba or a mortgage; rather it is paid by the insurance. Is it permissible to get a mortgage in the name of the family insurance, in such a way that you and other trustees or borrowers are not dealing directly with the bank and the lawyer takes care of dealing with the mortgage on your behalf?
I hope that you can advise me as to whether that is permissible or not.

Praise be to Allaah. A mortgage is a haraam riba-based transaction that is based on a loan with interest in which the owner of the money takes as collateral the property for the purchase of which the borrower is taking out the loan, until the debt has been paid off along with the interest ... My mother's rights over me, my rights over her, and the extent of my independence

I have a few questions concerning parents:
1. What right does my Mother have over me?
2. What right do I have over my mother?
3. What do I have the freedom to do (which is Halal or Mubah, Ofcourse) without my Mother having the right to stop me?
4. When does the Father have the final say in a matter?

I love my mother very very very much. She is very over protective, and sometimes I feel like I'm in chains. I know she is doing it out of extreme love for me. How can I tell her that I need a little choice of my own in life.

Praise be to Allah. 1. The mother's rights over her childThe mother has many major rights over her child. These rights are innumerable, but we may mention the following:a. Love and respect, as much as possible, because she is the most deserving of people of her son's good ... Continue Reading

Islamic Education in the West

How do we as Muslims living in the west maintain an Islamic Education for our children. Primary and secondary education up to the age of 15/16 may be provided in Muslim schools (which are also very expensive), but as for Higher Education there is no such Islamic Institute.

Even on the secondary school level on the agenda of Curriculum, we do not have books that deal with the branches of knowledge that are available in secular institutes, such as; Political science, Sociology, Psychology, Pedagogy. Please advise on how we should go about bringing about an Islamic Education system for our Youth in the west (bearing in mind that it is near impossible for us to migrate to Arab/Muslim countries because of the restrictions on immigration etc.).

Praise be to Allah. In order to preserve the structure of the Muslim family in the non-Muslim countries, we need to meet a number of conditions and requirements, both within the home and outside it:Within the home:It is essential for parents to uphold the habit of praying regularly in the mosque ... Celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him)

We celebrate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). On this day, we read a lot of salutations on him and engage in a lot of prayers to Allah. We try to show our love for our Prophet (peace be upon him). How come you say we cannot do it?

Answered by Sheikh `Abd al-Wahhâb al-Turayrî, former professor at al-Imâm University in Riyadh   Among the innovations that have become widespread in Muslim societies is the celebration of the birthday of the Prophet (peace be upon him). This celebration is observed in ... Continue Reading

Issues and rulings on kunyahs

In our community in India, little girls are given kunyahs such as Umm Haani’ and Umm Salamah. Is this acceptable?

Praise be to Allah. Firstly:  It is a good thing for the Muslim to be concerned about Islamic rulings, even concerning the smallest of details. Even more important than being concerned about them is to act upon what ones knows of those rulings. With regard to kunyahs there are some ... Continue Reading

The pillars, obligatory parts and Sunnahs of prayer

What are the Sunnahs of prayer?.
Praise be to Allaah. There are many Sunnahs of prayer, both words and actions.
