The Remembrance of the Bearer of Glad Tidings and the Warner صلى الله عليه وسلم - Episode 19: A Spotlight on Hudaibia Peace Treaty

Since 2018-01-27

Sheikh Ali Paqees: After Allah –Glory be to him- has honored His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم by pushing the confederates away from Medina. The Prophet sent missions to here and there. The Muslims' power was strengthened. One night, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saw a vision in his sleeping

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: The vision was that he and his Companions entered the Sacred Mosque (Al-Masjid Al-Haraam), and he took Al- Ka’bah’s key, they circumambulated it, performed lesser pilgrim (Umr’ah) and some shaved their heads while others shortened

Sheikh S’ad Al-Ghnnam: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم told his companions about this vision which made them very pleased.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: as they thought that they will enter Makah this year

Sheikh Ali Paqees: this vision was like stimulation to them to set out to visit Al-Ka’bah and perform lesser Pilgrim as they were deprived from seeing the Sacred House for years.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: The prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم ordered them to prepare themselves for setting out to perform Umra’h.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم urged the tribes who lived in deserts surrounding him to set out with him.

Sheikh Ali Paqees: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم set out with one thousands and five hundreds of his Companions (May Allah be pleased with them)

Sheikh S’ad Al-Ghnna’m: This great convoy that consisting of one thousands and four hundreds -while others said one thousands and five hundreds of the Prophet’s Companions صلى الله عليه وسلم- set out towards Makah.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم didn’t carry any weapon with him except the sheathed sword (traveler’s one).

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: As usual The Prophet asked one of his eyes from Khuza'ah to go to investigate the situation at Quraish and report to him the news until the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم arrives

Sheikh Ali Paqees: Then he ordered that the sacrificial animals be garlanded, and he donned Al-Ihrâm, the pilgrim’s garb.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: He set out on Monday, 1st of Zu-AlQe'da, 6th year A.H.

Sheikh Ali Paqees: Later Quraish knew that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم has set out so they stimulated some tribes around them to face the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and sent a convoy led by Khaled bin Al-Waleed to confront him

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: When the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم reached 'AasFaan, the eye that that he sent returned to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I left Ka’ab bin Lua’y gathering all Abyssinians along with great numbers of tribesmen. They intend to fight you and prevent you from entering the Sacred House" He meant that they will prevent the prophet from performing Pilgrim. Then the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, as his usual, consulted his companions (May Allah be pleased with them) concerning those Abyssinians

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم reached a spot called Thaniyat Al-Marar, the Prophet’s camel stumbled and knelt down  so the prophet’s companions tried their best to make her get up but in vain, so they said, “Al-Qaswaa’ has become stubborn!”

Sheikh Ali Paqees: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Al-Qaswaa’ has not become stubborn, for stubbornness is not her trait. Rather, she has been halted by He who halted the elephant.”

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Two hundred horsemen led by Khalid bin Al-Waleed set out to prevent the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم from reaching the Sacred House. Muslims were praying Al-Zuhr (The afternoon prayers) so Khaled lurked to take the Muslims by surprise during Zuhr (the afternoon) prayer and said that they will perform these weird actions (he meant their prayers) again at Al-'Asr and then I will wait and kill them to the very last one while they are praying. However, the rules of  theprayer of fear were revealed meanwhile and thus Khalid and his men missed the chance.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “By the Name of He in whose Hands my soul is, if they [i.e. the Quraysh] ask me anything which will honor the ordinances of Allah, I will grant it to them.” The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم then poked the she-camel and she got up. She got up and they reached Al-Hudaybiyah

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم felt that Khaled was watching them and planning something evil towards them. Accordingly, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم changed his route that he was going to take to Makah, the usual main route

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: The Prophet’s Companions found a source of little water which they competed upon. But it was few so they reported thirst to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم

Sheikh Ali Paqees: So the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم took an arrow out of his quiver, and gave it to them to be placed in the ditch.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: Only few minutes and the Water immediately gushed forth, and his followers drank to their fullest and left it.

Sheikh Ali Paqees: At that place, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم met with a man from Khuza’a who is called Budail bin Warqa’a.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Budail bin Warqa’ Al-Khuza‘i amongst a group of Khuza‘ah came to the prophet. He was known among his tribe and respected by them. He came and said, "O Messenger of Allah I left Ka’b bin Luay at Al-Hudaybiyah’s water sources , along with their camels and its children." He added that "Quraish intended to fight you and prevent you from the Sacred House". The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم replied that it was not for war that he had come forth.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi : “I have no other design,” he said, “but to perform ‘Umrah (the lesser pilgrimage) in the Holy Sanctuary. Should Quraish embrace the new religion, as some people have done, they are most welcome, but they chose the way of war!

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: By the Name of He in whose Hands my soul is, I will surely fight them to the last breath. It's either I die or Allah’s Order shall be fulfilled.”

Sheikh Ali Paqees: Budail bin Warqaa returned to Quraish and delivered the Prophet’s message. Quraish sent him صلى الله عليه وسلم the messengers for negotiations and The Prophet (may my mother and father be sacrificed for his own safety) dealt with everyone according to his attitude, personality and what he likes and is known by.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Quraish sent a man called Makraz bin Hafs.

Sheikh Ali Paqees: When the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saw him said, "That man is a treacherous one."

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: When he came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and talked to him, the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم told him exactly what he had said to Budail and his companions. So he returned back and informed Quraish what the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم has said but Quraish sent Hulais bin ‘Alqama

Sheikh Ali Paqees: When the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saw him said, this man belongs to a tribe that honors camels and cattle

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: so they sent the camels and cattle to be before his eyes. They even welcomed him while they were repeating I respond to your call my Lord, I respond to you, there is no god worth to be worshiped except You, All praise, grace and dominion belong to you. No Partners beside You. When he saw that he said, "Glory be to Allah, by Allah those people couldn’t be prevented from performing their rituals at the Sacred House (Al Ka’ba). He returned back and told Quraish that he saw that the camels and cattle were prepared to be sacrificed and "I see that you shouldn’t prevent them"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: but they didn’t listen to him and asked ‘Urwa bin Masouud Al-Thaqafi

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: ‘Urwa was an honorable man among his tribe. everyone obeys and cherishes him.

Sheikh S’ad Al-Ghnna’m: He came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and he got closer and closer to him صلى الله عليه وسلم

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: He was astonished when he saw how much the Prophet’s companions love him, respect and obey him

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: He kept a close eye on the unfathomable love and profound respect that the followers of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم showed him so he realized if there was a war, Muhammad shall have a firm fighters stand by him.

Sheikh Ali Paqees: He was much astonished because of what he had seen that they were honoring and respecting him. It happened that he may have touched the Prophet’s beard unintentionally, immediately all the swords in its sheath hit his hand; and he found that who said to him: "get your hands off the Prophet’s صلى الله عليه وسلم beard" was none but his nephew.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: He returned back to his people and said, "O my People, I have been to Chosroes, Caesar and Negus in their kingdoms, but never have I seen a king among a people like Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم among his Companions.

Sheikh Ali Paqees: They were talking to him as if they were whispering. And If he talks they will listen to what he says

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: If he performs his ablution, they would even kill themselves in order to do so, if he speaks, they would lower their voices. They wouldn’t even look him in the eye as a form of respect."

Sheikh Ali Paqees: He started to describe all these deeds which made him glorifying the Prophet's status.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: "He offers you a reasonable plan, so do what you please and accept it"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: he knew that Quraish doesn’t have any choice but to accept the Prophet’s صلى الله عليه وسلم offer

Sheikh Ali Paqees: He advised them to make peace with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and they agreed.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon:  The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم decided to make peace with Quraish

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: He decided to send Quraish his ambassador to show and assure them that he came to perform Ummrah not to fight them. So he choose his ambassador to be ‘Uthman bin ‘Affan

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: and he said to him "tell them we didn't come to Mecca for fighting purposes; rather, we came to visit the Holy House, honoring its sanctity, and Call them unto Islam" he صلى الله عليه وسلم also ordered him to visit some of the believers there and bring them the glad tidings of the near splendid victory; and inform them that soon all of Mecca shall embrace Islam, that no one would hide his faith in the Lord no more. And this was the solid conviction of the prophet expressed to his companions that Allah certainly prepares for his religion. And so 'Uthman went forth with that message.

Sheikh Ali Paqees:  'Uthman reached Mecca and he was hosted by Abban bin Sa'id bin Al-'As. Immediately he started delivering the message he was sent for from the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: As 'Uthamn did so, they offered him the permission to perform Tawaaf (circumambulation), if he so desired in his individual capacity, but he declined the offer indisputably rejecting it out of pure loyalty to the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم for he said he couldn't do that unless the prophet is permitted as well.

Sheikh Ali Paqees: 'Uthman also communicated with the weak Muslims whom the prophet entrusted him to contact, informing them of a soon imminent exit

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi:  and so Quraysh resorted to intimidation and thus imprisoned him to gain enough time to hold a consultation regarding their current situation, and  withhold of 'Uthman took so long that the rumors spread that he had been killed. As soon as Prophet heard the rumor, he became very angry and said, "By Allah, we shall not leave until we fight them." Then he called his Companions to pledge allegiance to him. They pledged him to what?;  to die with him thereat in the sake of Allah.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: A group pledged allegiance to him to never flee from the battlefield, no matter what shall happen; another group pledged to die with him in the battlefield; and the first one to pledge him allegiance was Abu Sinan Al-Asdi (may Allah be pleased with him) and Abu-Salamah bin Al-Akwa' pledged thrice to die with the prophet thereat at the beginning, middle and end of the pledge

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم held his own hand and said, "This hand is on behalf of ‘Uthman."

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: After the pledge had taken place ‘Uthman returned; and it was clear that the rumor was false. He pledged to the prophet what his companions have already pledged. None among the attendant didn't pledge to the prophet but Jadd bin Qais, a hypocrite.  The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم took the pledge of allegiance from his Companions under a tree while ‘Umar was holding his hand and Ma‘qil ibn Yasaar was holding a branch of the tree, lifting it away from the Prophet.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: This is Ar-Ridwan Pledge that Allah said about it:

{لَقَدْ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذْ يُبَايِعُونَكَ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ فَعَلِمَ مَا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ فَأَنْزَلَ السَّكِينَةَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَأَثَابَهُمْ فَتْحًا قَرِيبًا} [الفتح: 18]

Interpretation of the meaning: "God was pleased with the believers when they swore allegiance to you under the tree, for He knew well what was in their hearts, and sent down tranquility on them, and rewarded them with an expeditious victory" [Al-Fath: 18]

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: When the polytheists of Quraysh knew about the pledge, they realized the critical situations they dug for themselves. Consequently, they sent Suhail bin 'Amr to the prophet.

Sheikh Ali Paqees: As the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saw him approach, the Prophet remarked, “the matter (of negotiations) was made easy"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: It was the prophet's manners to be optimistic, specially regarding the names of people (Suhail = means easy and smooth). The prophet meant that Quraysh wanted reconciliation when they sent that man [Suhail]. And it was a long talk that took place between Suhail and the prophet.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: The prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and Suhail came to agree on the terms and conditions of the truce.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: That treaty introduced a new page in the relationship between the prophet and the polytheists of Mecca.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: Amongst those terms, the prophet shall return this year without entering Mecca.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: This means that he صلى الله عليه وسلم shall not perform his holy visit ('Umra) to the sacred house, but shall return with the Muslims on the following year, taking the liberty of staying only for 3 days, but they shall not come back armed and to carry no more than their swords in their sheaths.

Sheikh Ali Paqees: the second term was that war activities shall be suspended for ten years between both parties.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: The third term: during which both parties will live in full security and neither will raise sword against the other.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: Whosoever to join Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, or enter into treaty with him, should have the liberty to do so; and likewise whosoever wishes to join Quraish, or enter into treaty with them, should be allowed to do so.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Thus, whichever tribe joined Muhammad or Quraysh' rank shall be considered one with that group; and if the tribe was attacked, it'd be considered an assault against the group as a whole.

Sheikh Ali Paqees: The next condition was that any person from the Quraysh emigrating to Muhammad without his guardian's permission shall be returned to Mecca, whereas any Muslim emigrating from Muhammad's camp to Mecca will not be returned.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: As they agreed on the previous terms, he asked for 'Ali bin Abi Talib to dictate the treaty. He صلى الله عليه وسلم started with, “In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Ever Merciful”

Sheikh Ali Paqees: But Suhail bin 'Amr objected, saying “We do not know of ‘The Most Merciful’ instead; write, ‘In your name, O Allah’.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: So, the prophet commanded 'Ali to comply with them. Then he صلى الله عليه وسلم dictated 'Ali to write “The following is the treaty agreed upon by Muhammad, Messenger of Allah" yet again Suhail objected, "Had we acknowledged you as Prophet, we would not have debarred you from the Sacred House, nor fought you. Write Muhammad bin Abdullah"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: The prophet then said "I'm the Messenger of Allah even if you called me liar" and commanded 'Ali to erase (Messenger of Allah) and write as Suhail insisted. But 'Ali got angry for their obstinacy and refused to erase it. The prophet wisely calmed 'Ali down and erased it himself صلى الله عليه وسلم

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: Soon after this treaty, Khuza‘a clan joined the prophet's rank.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: and they were a former ally of Banu Hashim for they were corroborating the old ally.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: and Banu Bakr joined Quraysh's rank.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: during the dictation of this treaty and even before it was concluded.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: Abu jandal approached brutally chained and was staggering with privation and fatigue. He had fled from Quraysh and sought the help of the Muslims.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Abu Jandal was the son of Suhail, the head of Quraysh delegation to the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم concerning the treaty. Abu Jandal has embraced Islam and fled from Mecca and sought after the prophet's and Muslims' help. Suhail, Abu Jandal's father, looked at his son and said "Muhammad.."

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: "O Muhammad! This is the very first term with which we make peace with you. Return Abu Jandal to me."

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: The prophet tried to reason with him that the treaty wasn't signed yet. Accordingly Abu Jandal can't be included, the prophet repeated this thrice all to which Suhail refused.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: The prophet then said addressing Abu Jandal "O Abu Jandal, be patient, resign yourself to the Will of Allah. Allah shall provide for you and your helpless companions relief and means of escape. We have concluded a treaty of peace with them and we have taken the pledge in the Name of Allah. No way can we, therefore, betray it "

Interpretation of the meaning: "God has truly made the vision of His Apostle come true: You will surely enter the Holy Mosque in security if God please, without any fear, having shaved your heads and cut your hair. He knew what you did not know, and has vouchsafed you, apart from this, a victory near at hand." [Al-Fath: 27]

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: When the treaty was concluded with such terms and conditions, some of the companions became very upset; they felt they were humiliated by those very terms and conditions.

Sheikh Ali Paqees: At this anxious moment, 'Umar bin Al-Khattab approached the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and said: "O messenger of Allah! why should we be humiliated in our religon? Isn't our cause just? And theirs is unjust?

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: The prophet replied "Yes" 'Umar went on "Isn't our killed brothers are in Heaven and theirs are in hell?" again the prophet said "yes" then 'Umar said " Oh! Then why should we be humiliated in our religion? Why should we go back, why not fight them and Allah shall decide between us" the prophet then said, " O ibn Al-Khattab; O ibn Al-Khattab; I'm Allah's apostle and I didn't disobey him and He shall make me victorious and shall not fail me"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: 'Umar then said, “Did you not tell us that we would enter the Ka‘bah and circumambulate it?” He meant (did you not promise us so?) The prophet replied, “Yes, but did I tell you that we would visit the Ka‘bah this year particularly?” ‘Umar replied, “No.” The prophet then said, “So you will visit it and circumambulate it.” Emphasizing that indeed they'll but shall not rush it.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: Afterwards; 'Umar; very angry and in deep agony, approached Abu Bakr and told him exactly what he previously said to the prophet. Abu Bakr with great faith and firm believe answered him, "Stand by him and adhere to his  stance till you die as I testify that whatever he commands is the truth"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Afterwards, Allah's glad tidings came regarding the conquering of Mecca:

Interpretation of the meaning: "WE HAVE GIVEN you a splendid victory (1) That God may save you from earlier and subsequent blames, and complete His favours on you, and guide you on the straight path, (2) And help you with surpassing help (3)." [Al-Fath: 1-3]

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم summoned ‘Umar and informed him about the verses revealed. ‘Umar overjoyed asked, " Is it indeed a manifested victory?" the prophet said,"Yes, it is". 'Umar's raging heart calmed entirely down and greatly regretted his former attitude. He said, "I performed many good deeds as expiation for my improper manners"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: " and I spend in charity still, observe fasting and prayers and free as many slaves as possible in expiation for that I did" for he thought that he had upset the prophet with that opinion and those angry words.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: When the peace treaty had been concluded, all with settled with their objections to it. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم ordered his Companions to slaughter their sacrificial animals.

Sheikh Ali Paqees: Bu the companions, too depressed, neither slaughtered their sacrificial animal nor shaved their heads.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: even when he repeated his commandment thrice "get up and slaughter your sacrificial animals", they didn't respond to his commandment, too disappointed that they are at the outskirts of Mecca yet they've to return and slaughter their sacrifice right there.

Sheikh Ali Paqees: Depressed and sad, the prophet went to his wife Um Salamah and told her about this attitude of his Companions.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: She advised him, "O Prophet of Allah, do you want your order to be carried out?" he said, "Yes, I do" She then said,

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: "Go, and do not say a word to anybody"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Until you have slaughtered your sacrifice and called your barber to shave your head.”

Sheikh Ali Paqees: "As you do this, they'll rush to follow your commandments"

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: and so did the prophet. He got up and didn't say a word to them again.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: till he slaughtered his sacrifice and called his barber to shave his head صلى الله عليه وسلم

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: Seeing that, there was no turning back, the Companions of the Prophet got up, slaughtered their sacrifices, and started shaving one another’s head. They almost ended up killing one another out of their gloominess.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: They slaughtered the camels and cows. Each camel was slaughtered on behalf of 7 men and so they did for the cows as well. Amongst the sacrificial animal, there was a camel with a silver nose ring that was previously owned by Abu Jahl. The prophet brought him simply to irritate the polytheists and thereat he صلى الله عليه وسلم slaughtered as his sacrifice. Also the prophet invoked his Lord thrice to have mercy on those who shaved their heads and invoked the Almighty only once for those who have shortened it.
