The Remembrance of the Bearer of Glad Tidings and the Warner صلى الله عليه وسلم - Episode 13: A Spotlight on the Battle of Badr

Since 2017-11-14

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: After the two armies prepared for the fight, one of the idolaters stepped out who is Al-Aswad bin ‘Abdul Asad Al-Makhzumi, swearing he would drink from the water basin of the Muslims, otherwise, destroy it or die for it.

Sheikh Ali Paqees: He swore by Allaat and Al’uzza to spin the water basin so Allah wills that Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib will fight him

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: He engaged with Hamzah bin ‘Abdul Muttalib, who struck his leg with his sword. So the blood flooded out. He started to crawl towards the water basin to fulfill his word but Hamzah dealt him another blow that finished him off inside the basin.

Sheikh Ali Paqees: He was the first one who was killed at the battle

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: after that the fight began

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: Three of the Idolaters army stepped out

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Utbah, Shai’ba (Rabi’a’s sons) and Al-waleed who is Shaiba’s son. They were all one family

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: They stepped out and asked for combating three of the Prophet’s Companions

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: and in response to their call, three of the Ansaar, 'Awf and Mu'awwidh—the sons of 'Afra' and 'Abdullaah ibn Rawaahah came forward to give them battle. They were all from the Helpers (Al-Ansaar)

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: Then the three idolaters said: who are you? They said: we are from the Helpers (Al-Ansaar). The idolaters said, "Skillful and honorable"

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: but we have nothing to do with you. We ask for our people to fight us. Then the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

Sheikh Ali Paqees: O Ubai’da bin Al-Harith, step out. And he was the Prophet’s

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: O Hamzah, step out. O, Ali, step out

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: These three were so skillful and courageous. They were enough for the three idolaters

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: When they got closer to the idolaters, the idolaters asked them, "Who are?" So they announced their names. Then they said, "Skillful and honorable"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon:  The fight began. Ubaida’h fought with Utbah. Ubaidah was very old

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: While Hamzah fought with Shaiba’ and Ali fought with Al-Waleed

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Once the fight began, Ali and Hamzah didn’t take much time and they killed their fighters

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: Ubaida’h and Shaibah both received injuries in the encounter.

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Then Hamzah and Ali jumped over Utbah and killed him

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: Then they took ubaida’h and returned him back but he got a severe injury

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: He was martyred and died because of this severe injury after four days (May Allah be pleased with him)

Sheikh Ali Paqees: What happened concerning the fight between the three Muslims and idolaters was as a triumph for Muslims, and lifted up their high spirits

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: However, according to the idolaters, this fight that happened caused great disappointment and weakened their power. They were also burning with agony and rage because three of their most skilled and powerful horsemen were killed. That’s why they launched their attack over Muslim army while they were standing at their positions

Sheikh Ali Paqees: The Mekkan army fought with Al-Madinah army

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: as if the two armies were mingled together. The battle was disturbed and reached its rage

Sheikh Ali Paqees: The dust of the horses were raising and the battle’s fierce was unbelievable

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: and scenes of those attacking and those who were escaping, and those who were stepping forth and those who were retuning back to their positions

Sheikh Ali Paqees:  Blood flooded

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: The swords started striking the idolaters and caused them heavy losses while they were repeating, A’hadun A’had, A’hadun A’had (He is Allah The One)

Sheikh: Before the battle, the prophet slept deeply

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Then he got up and raised his head and said: “O Abu Bakr, glad tidings are there for you, Allâh’s victory has approached

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: I can see Gabriel on his mare

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: carrying over his folding thick of a sandstorm.”

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: having one tool of War’s tools

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Allah has revealed to His Messenger what means ('I am sending to your aid a thousand angels in succession) which means that these Angels didn't came all at once but one group after another

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy:  Abdullah Ibn ‘Abbas said, “While on that day a Muslim was chasing a disbeliever and he heard over him the swashing of a whip and the voice of the rider saying, ‘Go ahead Haizum’. He glanced at the polytheist who had (now) fallen down on his back. The Helper came to the Messenger of Allâh صلى الله عليه وسلم and related that event to him. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم replied, ‘You have told the truth. This was the help from the third heaven.”

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: The Prophet’s Companions said that they saw the Idolaters’ head were cut without us touching it and his hand was cut but no one of us cut or touched the man but it was the Help of the angels Allah sent

Interpretation of the meanibng: "And when Allah revealed to the angels, saying: 'I shall be with you. Give courage to the believers. I shall cast terror into the hearts of the unbelievers. Strike them above the necks, smite their finger tips" [Al-Anfal: 12]

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: Before the battle had started, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم took a handful of gravel

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: cast it at the enemy and said: “Confusion seize their faces!”

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: “Confusion seize their faces” so the dust entered either their eyes, noses or their mouths because of this handful of gravel. With respect to this, Allâh says,

Interpretation of the meaining: "It was not you who killed them, but Allah slew them, neither was it you who threw at them. Allah threw at them in order that He confers on the believers a fair benefit. Indeed, Allah is Hearing, Knowing." [Al-Anfal: 17]

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم started to encourage them and lift up their spirits, motivate them to fight the enemies of Allah and said to his Companions, (May my father, mother and my own self be sacrificed for him): by the Lord that my life lays within His Hands

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Everyone who kills them and then killed patiently without agony

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: Allah will surely admit him to Paradise

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: Rise up and racewith one another for a Jannat as wide as the Heavens and the Earth

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: O, what a pleasant to those people whom paradise lays within their hands

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: One of the Companions, Umair bin Himyar was listening to the prophet’s sayings. He said: O, How wonderful” then the Prophet said, "Why did you say that?"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: O Messenger of Allah, nothing more than that I wished to be one of those for whom this paradise was prepared for” he is a man that wishes for this paradise

Sheikh Ali Paqees: The prophet said, "You’re one of them. Umair took some dates and started eating them then he stopped eating and threw the dates

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Then he said, "If Allah wills that I live till I eat these dates, what a long life." Then he threw the dates and entered the battle field and he fought till he died. He wished and supplicated to Allah to enter Jannah till he died May Allah be pleased with him. Also, the story of Awf bin al-Haarith bin Afraa’, he listened to the Prophet while he was encouraging them to fight and asked the prophet, "O Messenger of Allah!"

Sheikh Ali Paqees: "What makes Allah laugh at His Slave?"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

Sheikh Ali Paqees: "An attack towards the idolaters without wearing armors"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: He took off his armor and threw it away, then picked up his sword and fought the people until he was killed. May Allah be pleased with them all.

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: When Satan saw the Muslim’s triumph and the great loss falling over his guides

Sheikh Ali Paqees: and he saw the Angels helping the Muslims at the battle using their weapons

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy:  He was in a resemblance of Suraqa bin Malik May Allah be pleased with him). He started to encourage the idolaters to fight and attack The Prophet But When Allah sent His angels to help Muslims and fight along with them and striking the idolaters, and he saw the Muslims’ victory looming

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: while the battle reached its rage and he saw what had happened to his guides

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: and what caused them of great and heavy losses

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: He ran away but Al-Haarith bin Hesham stopped him and hold him as he thought he was Suraaqa bin Maalik and said to him,  "O Suraaqa, where are you going and leaving us? You told us before that you’re our neighbor and that you will support and help us?"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: He hit al-Haarith in his chest to let him go and he ran away. But the Idolaters saw him and said,  "O Suraaqa, to where are you going and leaving us? Didn’t you say that you are our neighbor and will support?" Then the Satan said, "I can see what you cannot. I fear Allah, Allah is Stern in retribution"

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: He saw the Angels helping and supporting Muslims. He saw Allah’s victory and feared Allah that he even when he ran away he jumped into the sea

Sheikh Ali Paqees: Satan ran away and left the idolaters to die by the Prophet’s hands

Interpretation of the meaining: "And when Satan made their foul deeds seem fair to them. He said: 'No one shall conquer you this day. I shall be your savior' but when the two armies came within sight of each other, he took to his heels, saying: 'I reject you, for I can see what you cannot. I fear Allah, Allah is Stern in retribution" [Al-Anfal: 48]

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: Abu Jahl cried…that tyrant who was the main reason behind this war. He was the main reason for causing this war when he opposed and forced Quraish to fight the Prophet He was encouraging the idolaters by saying:

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: don’t be disappointed or depressed that Suraaqa left you and ran away. He agreed with Mohammed to betray you

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: Don’t be suffered or sad over Utbah and Shaiba’s death, they were hasted

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: I swore by the two idols that we won’t return back till we had tied Muslims with ropes and defeated them

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: Then he said arrogantly, "Even if twenty men of you killed one man of them, no use just strike them hardly and seize them. He wants the idolaters to seize Muslims who are the triumphs by Allah’s will and His support by His angels

Sheikh Ali Paqees: During the battle, Abd Al-Rahmaan bin Awf said, "I was standing in the row and looked at my right and left; I found two young lads of Al-Ansaar

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy; I wished I was standing among elders men

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon:  I wasn’t too much happy because they wouldn’t fight or help at the battle. While I was thinking of this matter

Sheikh Ali Paqees: one of them whispers in my ears: O My uncle

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: I answered: Yes, My son’s brother (he wasn’t his son’s brother but it’s a way to speak to those who are brothers in Islam). The lad said: show me Abu Jahl. I asked: what for?

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: he said: I heard that he abused Messenger of Allah

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: I swear by Allah that I will fight him till one of us will be killed

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: I was astonished by what he said and insisted to do. Then I looked at my left because the other lad whispers to me the exact thing that the first one whispered and asked

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: Abu Jahl was at the center of the battle. He was encouraging the idolaters and the horsemen surrounded him to protect their leader

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: When I saw Abu Jahl, I pointed at him as answer to their question

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: They attacked him as a hawk and stroked him strongly till he died. Then they went to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, each one of them claiming that he had finished Abu Jahl saying: I killed Allah’s enemy Aba Jahl. So the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: which one of you killed him? The two answered: I did it.

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم asked if they had wiped the blood off their swords and they answered that they had not.  He then examined both swords and He found the First’s sword dripping blood and the second dripping as well. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم kindly said to them: You both had killed him."

Sheikh Ali Paqees: The Prophet’s Companions started captivating after the battle. Abd Al-Rahman bin Awf met with Umayya bin khalaf, one of the great idolaters, while Abd Al-Rahman was gathering weapons. He said: o Abd Al-Rahman, the two were friends before Islam, I’m better than those weapons so take me as a captive. He then captivated him, however, Bilal bin Rabah (May Allah be pleased with him) saw umayya, he then shouted, "Woe to me if he escapes! Woe to me if he escapes! Till Companions reached him and killed him"

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: The prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and his companions (May Allah be pleased with them all) triumphed over the idolaters. After the battle had ended, the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم mentioned and spoken of one of the most ill-natured enemy of Allah, he is the Pharaoh of this Ummah(nation). The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم asked, "Who  would go and inquire whether Abu Jahl is dead or alive?"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: So Abdullah Bin Masu’d went with those who went to inquire who died. He found him on the verge of death breathing his last breath

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: Abul Jah was repeating while he was on the verge of death, "Who is the winner? Who is the Winner?"

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi:  "O enemy of Allah, its Allah and His messenger’s triumph."

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon:  Abdullah bin Masu’d stepped on his neck. Abu Jahl looked at him and said, “O [little] shepherd, you have ascended a very high place today!” He was still arrogant till the very end of his breath

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: Then ibin Masu’d cut Abu Jahl’s head and went to the Prophet to confirm his death

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Ibin Masu’d said, "O Massenger of Allah, this is the head of Abu Jahl, the enemy of Allah. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “[Is it true] By Allaah, other than whom there is no God?” He repeated it three times then he said,  “Allâh is Great, praise is to Allâh, Who has fulfilled His Promise, assisted His servant and defeated the confederates alone.”

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم went to the place wherein Abu Jahl was killed

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: They showed the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم his body and then he said, He was the Pharaoh’s of this Ummah

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: After the end of the battle, fourteen men of the Prophet’s Companions were martyred, six of Migrants and eight of Al-Ansar. While seventeen men of the idolaters were killed and seventeen were captivated

Sheikh Ali Paqees: Abu Jahl was killed, ummaya bin Kalaf was killed, Utbah and Shaiba sons of Rabi’a were killed and all tyrants and valiants of disbelieve were killed. Allah granted triumph to His religion and raised His religion’s bannar

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi:  The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم went to see the bodies of the idolaters and said, "What a bad tribe you were towards your prophet, you belied me while the others believed me, you let me down while the others supported me and you drove me away while the others sheltered me

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: \After the idolaters’ great loss, Muslims divided into three, the first part defended the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and protected him

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: The second part gathered the spoils after the idolaters escaped

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: The third part went after those who escaped and drove them away

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: So they disagreed among each others

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: A dispute occurred among them, and Allah blamed them for this dispute as each one of them kept saying the spoils of war belong to me. Those who protected the prophet after the war said the spoils belonged to us

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Those who pursued the enemy said, “You are not more entitled to have them than us because we repelled the enemy and defeated them.”

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: “We collected and gathered them, so no one [besides us] should have a share in them.” Then, Allah The Almighty revealed the verses:

{يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْأَنْفَالِ قُلِ الْأَنْفَالُ لِلَّهِ وَالرَّسُولِ فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَصْلِحُوا ذَاتَ بَيْنِكُمْ وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ} [الأنفال: 1]

Interpretation of the meaining: "They ask you [O Muhammad] about the spoils of war. Say: “The spoils are for Allah and the Messenger.” So fear Allah and adjust all matters of difference among you, and obey Allah and His Messenger [Muhammad], if you are believers."

The main lesson here in this battle is to fear Allah and obey His messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم and do not be deceived by the goods of the worldly life because it will not last long. It was only three days then the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم divided the war’s spoils among them and the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم took Al-Khums (one-fifth) as Allah has revealed

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: The prophet stood over the bodies of Quraish who had been thrown into one of the wells, and started to call them by name and by the names of their fathers, saying:

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi : O son of Son, O Son of son did you find that the promises of your Lord came true. Behold, we have found that our Lord’s promise do come true?”

Sheikh Ali Paqees : Thereupon, ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab or one of His Companions said: “O Messenger of Allâh! Why you speak to bodies that have no souls in them?”

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم answered: “By Him in Whose hand is Muhammad’s soul! You do not hear better what I am saying than they do.” So, Allah , their Lord, has disgraced them both in the worldly life and the Hereafter, while Allah had given victory to His ally and His Messenger (peace be upon him and May Allah be pleased with them)

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: The news concerning the war was spread and even reached people at Mekkah

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: What happened and who is the winner? They were questioning and it was only few moments and then they knew that the Mekkan army had lost the battle and had been caused heavy casualties

Sheikh Ali Paqees: Mekkah’s people were shocked when they heard the news

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Their chests were constrained and were shocked as if the news was as a heavy mountain fell over their heads. They even forbidden any one to shed tears over those who died in order not to be a chance to gloat over Mekka’s people and its notables’ grief

Sheikh Ali Paqees: The captives had been captivated. The prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم held an assembly to consult his companions concerning the captives

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: So the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم consulted Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) and he said (May Allah be pleased with him), "O Messenger of Allah, they are our tribes and family so I suggest to release them in return to a ransom"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Then the Prophet consulted Omar and the Prophet used to consult him. He said: "O , bin al-Khattab, what do you see concerning their issues?" He said, "I don’t agree with Abu Bakr’s suggestion"

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy:  " I see that I would be ordered to kill that man (one of the captives)

Sheikh Ali Paqees: in order to know that In Islam there is no leniency

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: but The Prophet as his kind nature, mercy and sympathy preferred Abu Bakr’s suggestion and accepted to return them for a ransom

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: when tomorrow came

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: Omar came to the Prohet صلى الله عليه وسلم and Abu Bakr

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: He found both the Prophet and Abu Bakr crying so he said,

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: "O Messenger of Allah, why are you two crying?"

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: that I might weep if it was worth weeping for, or else I would feign weeping"

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: the Prophet said: Allah has rebuked me for taking ransom in return for the captives then he read what Allah has revealed

Interpretation of the meaining: "It is not for a prophet to have captives [of war] until he inflicts a massacre [upon Allah 's enemies] in the land. Some Muslims desire the commodities of this world, but Allah desires [for you] the Hereafter. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. If not for a decree from Allah that preceded, you would have been touched for what you took by a great punishment." [Al-Anfal: 67-68]

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: the news of the battle that The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم has given victory over the idolaters, was spread by the prophet’s companions to al-Madinah

Sheikh Zaid al-Qoroon: Two heralds, ‘Abdullah bin Rawahah and Zaid bin Harithah were despatched to Madinah, to convey the glad tidings of victory to the Muslims there.

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: The Jews and Hypocrites were spreading rumors concerning that Muhammad has been killed and the idolaters were triumphed. They tried to fill the Muslims’ hearts with fear and worry

Sheikh Ali Paqees: and when Zaid came, he brought them good news that Allah has given victory to His Messenger and His ally

Sheikh Abdullateaf Al-Ghamdi: Al-Madinah was shaking by the supplication to Allah, Praising Allah and Glorifying Him. They even prostrated to Allah (Glory be to Allah)

Sheikh Khaled al-Khalawy: While these news made Muslims very happy and filled their hearts with joy and happiness and Glorifying Allah their Lord, Osama bin zaid (May Allah be pleased with him) said, "We received the news of the manifest victory while we were digging Ruqaiyah’s grave." (May Allah be pleased with her), the Prophet’s daughter, and the wife of ‘Uthman bin ‘Affan. She had been terminally ill and Othman, her husband (May Allah be pleased with him) asked for the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم permission to stay with her, to nurse his wife (May Allah be pleased with her)
