Ten stops for women in Ramadan

Since 2012-11-22

These are some concise words and precious calls which we give as a present to the Muslim women and the believing young women on the occasion of the coming of the month of Ramadan.

In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

All the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of mankind, jinn and all that exists, and peace and blessings be upon the most honorable of all Prophets and Messengers, Muhammad and upon all his family and companions.

These are some concise words and precious calls which we give as a present to the Muslim women and the believing young women on the occasion of the coming of the month of Ramadan. We ask Allah to benefit each and every one of our Muslim sisters who reads them. We ask Him that these words help them to obey Allah Almighty and to win both His pleasure and forgiveness in this great month.

The first stop: Ramadan is a blessing you should be grateful for:

O sister, the month of Ramadan is one of the greatest blessings bestowed by Allah Almighty on His believing slaves. It is a month where rewards and degrees are sent down, where Allah frees His slaves from Hellfire. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “When Ramadan comes, the gates of Heaven are opened, and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained up.” [Agreed upon]

«إذا جاء رمضان فتحت أبواب الجنة، وغلقت أبواب النار، وصفدت الشياطين» متفق عليه

He, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has also said, “Whoever observes fast during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards (not for showing off), then all his past sins will be forgiven.” [Agreed upon]

«من صام رمضان إيمانا واحتسابا غفر له ماتقدم من ذنبه» متفق عليه

Allah Almighty has said in the Holy Hadith, “Every deed of the son of Adam is for him, with the exception of fasting, for it is done for Me and I will give a reward for it.” [Agreed upon]

«كل عمل ابن آدم له إلا الصيام. فإنه لي وأنا أجزي به» متفق عليه

The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “In every night and day in the month of Ramadan Allah has His freed people from Hellfire. Verily for every Muslim there is a supplication which is accepted. And there is The night of Al-Qadr (Decree).” [Authenticated by Al-Albani]

«إن لله تعالى عتقاء في كل يوم و ليله، لكل عبد منهم دعوة مستجابة» صححه الألباني

Allah Almighty has said, {The night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshipping Allâh in that night is better than worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e. 83 years and 4 months).} [Surat Al-Qadr 97:3]

Transliteration: Laylatu alqadri khayrun min alfi shahrin

O my Muslim sister, these are some of the virtues of this noble month. They manifest the greatness of the bliss of Allah Almighty on you that He has given you the advantage over others and prepared you to fast it and to spend its nights in prayers and remembrances. How many people there are who fasted with us the previous Ramadan but now they are under the ground in their graves. So thank Allah, O my Muslim sister, for this blessing. Do not meet it with acts of disobedience and sins lest it perishes and goes away. He was right who said:

If you are blessed so preserve the blessing
Sins wash the blessings away
Surround it with obeying the Lord of mankind
For He is quick to be angry

The second stop: how do you receive Ramadan?

1 - By hastening to sincere repentance as Allah Almighty has said, {And all of you beg Allâh to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful.} [Surat An-Nur 24:31]

Transliteration: watooboo ila Allahi jameeAAan ayyuha almuminoona laAAallakum tuflihoona

2 – By quitting all abominable acts such as lying, backbiting, calumny, obscenity, songs, wanton display of yourself, intermingling and the like.

3 – By sincere intention and determination to fill Ramadan with righteous deeds and not to waste its noble times in what will not benefit.

4 – By increasing the remembrances, supplication, asking for forgiveness and reciting the Quran.

5 – By observing the five daily prayers in their due fixed times as well as performing them patiently, with tranquility and reverence.

6 – By observing the optional prayers after performing the obligatory ones.

The third stop: learn the provisions of fasting

The Muslim woman must learn the provisions of fasting; its obligations, its Sunnah and its manners so that her fasting be correct and accepted by Allah Almighty. The following is a concise is look at the provisions of the fasting of the women:

1 – Fasting is obligatory to every Muslim sane woman, settling (not traveling), able (not sick), free from all the prohibition of fasting such as menstruation and postpartum.

2 – If the young girl reached the age of maturity during the day, she should start fasting on the spot for the rest of the day. She has become now obligated to fast. She does not have to make up for the missed days because she was not obligated to fast them.

3 – It is stipulated to pre-intend before the obligatory fasting of Ramadan as well as the making up for missed days and expiation fasting; because of the Hadith, “There is no fasting for he who does not pre-intend to fast during the night.” [Authenticated by Ibn Hazm]

«لا صيام لمن لم يبيت الصيام من الليل» صحيح ابن حزم

So you should intend to fast in any part during the night, even if it is a moment before dawn.

4 – The spoilers of fasting are seven. They are:

a. Sexual intercourse.
b. Ejaculation through the intercourse, hugging or kissing.
c. Eating and drinking.
d. What takes the meaning of eating and drinking such as intravenous feeding.
e. Bleeding by cupping and phlebotomy.
f. Deliberate vomiting.
g. Menstruations and postpartum.

5 – If the woman in menstruation sees the white spot (it is a white liquid secreted by the womb when the menstruation ends by which a woman knows she has purified) she intends to fast from the night and fasts. If there is no sign of purity from the menstruation that she knows, she puts a piece of cotton or the like, if it gets out clean she fasts, if not she breaks the fast.

6 – It is best for the menstruating woman to accept her innate nature and to accept the destiny of Allah and does not take the pills that stop menstruation. It is something that Allah has decreed upon women.

7 – If a woman in postpartum got purified after forty days, she performs total ablution and fasts. She considers the rest of bleeding as istihâdah (it is the womb bleeding between periods) unless it coincides with her normal period, then it is menstruation.

8 – The istihâdah does not affect fasting.

9 – It is probable, according to analogical deduction, that the pregnant and nursing mothers take the same ruling of the sick. They are allowed to break the fast and there is nothing for them except making up for the missed days. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Verily Allah has excused the traveler from fasting and half of the prayer, and has excused the pregnant and nursing mothers from the fasting.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majjah and declared good authentic by Al-Albani]

«إن الله وضع عن المسافر الصوم وشطر الصلاة وعن الحامل والمرضع الصوم، أو الصيام» رواه الترمذي وابن ماجه وقال الألباني: حسن صحيح

10 – There is nothing wrong to taste the food for a need, but she should not swallow it. She spits it out of her mouth and thus her fasting is not spoiled.

11 – It is preferable to hasten with breaking the fast before performing the Maghrib (sunset) prayer, and delaying taking the sahur (the last light meal before dawn). The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “The people will remain on the right path as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast and delay taking the Sahûr.” [Agreed upon]

«لا يزال الناس بخير ما عجلوا الفطر» متفق عليه

The fourth stop: the month of fasting not the month of food

My Muslim sister: Allah has prescribed the fasting of Ramadan so that the Muslim gets accustomed to patience and perseverance; thus he will be controlling himself, fearing his lord. Allah Almighty has said, {O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqûn (the pious)} [Surat Al-Baqarah 2:183]

Transliteration: Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo kutiba AAalaykumu alssiyamu kama kutiba AAala allatheena min qablikum laAAallakum tattaqoona

Some of the ancestors was asked, “Why was fasting prescribed?” He answered, “So that the rich tastes poverty and thus he will not forget the poor.”

It is regrettable what we see from the extravagance of many people concerning food and drink in this month. The quantity of food used by every family in Ramadan is greater than in any other month of the year! Except for those whom Allah has mercy on. In addition, women spend most of the day in the kitchen to prepare different kinds of food and varieties of drinks!

When will you read the Quran?

When will you remember Allah and supplicate Him, and ask Him for forgiveness?

When will you learn the provisions of fasting and the manners of optional night acts of worship?

When will you be devoted to the obedience of Allah Almighty?

Beware O sister, from wasting the times of this month in other than obeying Allah and worshipping Him. He is really a loser who reached Ramadan and was not forgiven. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “The son of Adam has not filled anything worse than his stomach; it is enough for the son of Adam few bites to set right his spine. If it is inevitable (that he should fill his stomach), so let him leave a third for his food, a third for drinking and a third for breathing.” [Authenticated by Al-Albani]

«ما ملأ آدمي وعاء شرا من بطن، بحسب ابن آدم أكلات يقمن صلبه، فإن كان لا محالة: فثلث لطعامه، وثلث لشرابه وثلث لنفسه» صححه الألباني

The fifth stop: Ramadan is the month of the Quran

Ramadan has a certain particularity by the Quran that no other month has. Allah Almighty has said, {The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’ân, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong).} [Surat Al-Baqarah 2:185]

Transliteration: Shahru ramadana allathee onzila feehi alquranu hudan lilnnasi wabayyinatin mina alhuda waalfurqani

Ramadan and the Quran are inseparable. If Ramadan is mentioned, the Quran is mentioned. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, has narrated in the authentic book of the Hadith, “The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was the most generous of all people, and he used to reach the peak in generosity in the month of Ramadan when he meets with Jibrîl [Gabriel]. Gabriel, peace be upon him, used to meet him every night of Ramadan to teach him the Quran. The Messenger of Allah, when Gabriel meets him, was even more generous than the strong uncontrollable wind (in readiness and haste to do charitable deeds).” [Reported by Al-Bukhari]

«كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أجود الناس وكان أجود ما يكون في رمضان حين يلقاه جبريل وكان جبريل عليه السلام يلقاه في كل ليلة في رمضان فيدارسه القرآن فلرسول الله حين يلقاه جبريل أجود بالخير من الريح المرسلة» رواه البخاري

There is evidence in this Hadith of the desirability of reciting the Quran and studying it at night. At night, one is free from worries, determination is gathered and the heart and tongue assemble to ponder; as Allah Almighty has said, {Verily, the rising by night (for Tahajjud prayer) is very hard and most potent and good for governing oneself, and most suitable for (understanding) the Word (of Allâh).} [Surat Al-Muzzammil 73:6]

Transliteration: Inna nashiata allayli hiya ashaddu watan waaqwamu qeelan

The ancestors used to increase reciting the Quran in Ramadan. Some would finish reciting the Quran every three days during the optional night prayers. Others used to finish it every seven days throughout the year and in Ramadan every three days. During the last ten days of Ramadan they used to finish reciting it every night.

In Ramadan the ancestors used to increase reciting the Quran. Some used to finish reciting the whole Quran during the night optional prayers every three days. Others used to finish reciting it through the year every seven days but every three days in Ramadan and every night in the last ten days.
When Ramadan entered upon him, Az-Zuhari used to say, “It is but reciting the Quran and feeding the food (in charity).”

Ibn Abdel-Hakam said, “When Ramadan entered upon us, Imam Malik used to quit reading the Hadith and sitting with the scholars and turned to reciting the Quran from the Book.”

Abdel-Raziq said, “When Ramadan entered upon us, Sufian Ath-Thawri used to quit performing all acts of worship and turned to reciting the Quran.”
You, my Muslim sister, should have a prescribed part of the Quran to recite by which your heart will live, your soul will be purified, your limbs will be humbled and thus you will deserve the intercession of the Quran on the Day of Resurrection. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “The fast and the Quran are two intercessors for the slave of Allah on the Day of Resurrection. The fast will say: ‘O My Lord, I have prevented him from his food and desires during the day, so let me intercede for him.’ The Quran will say: ‘I have prevented him from sleeping at night, so let me intercede for him.’ He said, ‘Their intercession will be accepted’.” [Al-Albani, good authentic]

«الصيام والقرآن يشفعان للعبد يوم القيامة، يقول الصيام: أي رب منعته الطعام والشهوة فشفعني فيه، ويقول القرآن: منعته النوم بالليل فشفعني فيه، فيشفعان» الألباني، حسن صحيح

The sixth stop: Ramadan is the month of generosity and charity

My Muslim sister: the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has urged women to spend in charity. He, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “O women! Spend in charity and increase asking for forgiveness, for verily, I have seen that you are the majority of the dwellers of Hellfire.” [Reported by Muslim]

«يا معشر النساء تصدقن وأكثرن الاستغفار فإني رأيتكن أكثر أهل النار» رواه مسلم

The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “O women, spend in charity, even from your ornaments…” [Reported by Muslim]

«تصدقن يا معشر النساء ولو من حليكن» رواه مسلم

As for charity in Ramadan it is better than in any other time. Therefore, the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, was more generous in Ramadan than the blowing wind. His charity included giving knowledge, money, the soul to the sake of Allah Almighty in showing His religion and guiding His slaves. He was beneficial in all possible ways to the slaves of Allah; feeding the hungry, preaching the ignorant, fulfilling their needs and bearing their burdens.

From generosity in Ramadan: feeding the fasting

Be keen my Muslim sister to break the fast of a Muslim as this contains the great reward and overwhelming good. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Whoever breaks the fast of a fasting person will get his same reward without decreasing anything from the reward of that fasting person.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi and authenticated by Al-Albani]

«من فطر صائما كان له مثل أجره غير أنه لا ينقص من أجر الصائم شيئا» رواه الترمذي وصححه الألباني

Be also keen on ongoing charity. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “When the son of Adam dies, his work ends except for three: charity that is ongoing, knowledge that is beneficial and a righteous son who will pray for him.” [Authenticated by Ibn Taymiyyah]

«إذا مات ابن آدم انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث: صدقة جارية أو علم ينتفع به أو ولد صالح يدعو له» صححه ابن تيمية

The seventh stop: Ramadan is the month of performing optional night acts of worship

My Muslim sister: the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, used to perform night optional prayers till his feet became swollen. His companions said, “O Messenger of Allah! You do that though Allah has forgiven all your previous and coming sins?” upon which he has said, “Should I not be a thankful slave of Allah?” [Agreed upon]

«أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم صلى حتى انتفخت قدماه. فقيل له: أتكلف هذا وقد غفر الله لك ما تقدم من ذنبك وما تأخر؟ فقال: أفلا أكون عبدا شكورا» متفق عليه

The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “He who establishes prayers during the nights of Ramadan faithfully out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards (not for showing off), all his past sins will be forgiven.” [Agreed upon]

«من قام رمضان إيمانا واحتسابا غفر له ماتقدم من ذنبه» متفق عليه

The Muslim woman can go to the mosque to perform prayers including the taraweeh prayers (night prayers in Ramadan), however, her praying at her home is better. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Do not forbid your women from going to the mosques; and their homes are better for them.” [Authenticated by Al-Albani]

«لا تمنعوا نساءكم المساجد وبيوتهن خير لهن» صححه الألباني

Um Salama said, “Whenever Allah's Messenger (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) finished his prayers with Taslim, the women would get up and he would stay on for a while in his place before getting up. He said, ‘I think (and Allah knows better), that the purpose of his stay was that the women might leave before the men who had finished their prayer.’”

«كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا سلم، قام النساء حين يقضي تسليمه، ويمكث هو في مقامه يسيرا قبل أن يقوم. قال: نرى -والله أعلم- أن ذلك كان لكي ينصرف النساء، قبل أن يدركهن أحد من الرجال» رواه البخاري

Nevertheless, the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, said that their prayers in their homes are better than their prayers at the mosques. Then, what do you think of the woman who goes out in adornment, wearing perfume and putting on her best clothes? Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said, “if the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, had known what women have done after him, he would have forbidden them to go out to the mosques.” [Agreed upon]

«لو أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم رأى ما أحدث النساء لمنعهن المسجد» متفق عليه

That is what she said about the companion women and the early Muslim women; what do you think she would say if she had seen women in the present era?
The wise women, if she wanted to go to the mosque, should go out on the status the ancestor women used to go out in when they went out to the mosques. She should also evoke the righteous intention. She is going to pray and to listen to the verses of Allah, Glorified and Exalted, which invite her to be tranquil and dignified, and not to draw attention to her.

Some women go to the mosques alone with the male driver. How many forbidden things are committed in order to perform an optional act of worship? This is huge ignorance and severe foolishness. A woman should not wear perfume or the like when going out of her home. She should not be scented with incense as the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “If any woman got scented by incense let her not pray ‘Isha’ with us.” [Reported by Muslim]

«أيما امرأة أصابت بخورا فلا تشهد معنا العشاء الآخرة» رواه مسلم

A woman should not bring along her children who cannot do without her during her praying. They will harm the rest of praying people by crying and screaming, or by playing with the Quran Books or the luggage of the mosque and others.

The eighth stop: the fasting of the limbs

My Muslim sister: know that the fasting person is he whose limbs fasted from all sins. The eyes fast from watching the forbidden. The ears fast from hearing the forbidden such as the lies, the backbiting, the calumny, the song and all that is prohibited. The hands fast from the forbidden force. The legs fast from walking to do the forbidden. The tongue fasts from lying, obscenity and false speech. The belly fasts from eating and drinking, and the private parts from sexual intercourse. If he talks, his words are good, beneficial and fruitful. He does not talk obscenity or indecency that violates his fasting and spoils it. He should not go into the honor of the Muslims by lies, backbiting, gossiping, malice or envy, because he knows that this is one of the greatest sins and evils. That is why the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Whoever does not give up forged speech, evil actions and ignorance, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)” [Reported by Al-Bukhari]

«من لم يدع قول الزور والعمل به والجهل فليس لله حاجه أن يدع طعامه وشرابه» رواه البخاري

The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “When any one of you is fasting on a day, he should neither indulge in obscene language, nor raise the voice; or if anyone reviles him or tries to quarrel with him he should say: I am a person fasting.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari]

«إذا كان يوم صوم أحدكم فلا يرفث ولا يصخب فإن سابه أحد أو قاتله فليقل: إني امرؤ صائم» رواه البخاري

As for this who fasts from food and drink but breaks his fast with the honor of his Muslim brothers, he is the one meant in the words of the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, “there can be a fasting man who gets hunger and thirst only out of his fasting,” [Al-Albani, good authentic]

«رب صائم حظه من صيامه الجوع والعطش» الألباني، حسن صحيح

The ninth stop: practical steps for time management in Ramadan

A woman must invest the time of this great month in what brings her win and happiness on the Day of Resurrection. She should seize its days and nights in what brings her closer to Paradise and keeps her away from Hellfire by obeying Allah Almighty and keeping away from disobeying Him. And for a woman to be preserving her time in this holy month:

1 – She should not get out of her house but for a need or for an assured act of obedience to Allah.

2 – She should avoid going to the market places especially on the last ten days of Ramadan. She can buy the feast clothes before the last ten days or before the beginning of Ramadan.

3 – She should avoid unnecessary visits; if it has a reason such as visiting a sick person it should not be too long.

4 – She should avoid evil assemblies such as the assemblies of backbiting, gossiping, lying, laughing at or calumny.

5 – She should avoid wasting time in competitions and solving riddles, watching movies and TV series and keeping track of satellite channels. If the Muslim woman preoccupies herself with this, then Ramadan will come in vain.

6 – She should avoid staying up late at night till dawn because this leads to missing prayers and sleeping most of the day.

7 – She should avoid bad company and evil entourage.

8 – Beware of wasting most hours in sleeping. Some people sleep after dawn and they do not wake up but before sunset. What kind of fasting is this?

9 – Beware of wasting time in adornment and being preoccupied in clothes and sitting before the mirror.

10 – Beware of wasting time in preparing food.

11 – Beware of wasting time in phone calls. It is the way of the weak in faith to break the severity of hunger and thirst. If such people embark on reciting and studying the Book of Allah it would be better for them.

12 – Beware of quarrels and disagreements that are futile but for wasting time and falling into the forbidden. If you are invited – O my Muslim sister – to something of that just say, “I am a woman fasting!”

The tenth stop: the last ten days

O sister in Allah, twenty days have passed from the month. The remaining is only those ten days; so the opportunity is still there for you and the rewards are still awaiting. If you have been neglectful on the previous days know that deeds are by their ends. With the start of the last ten days of Ramadan, the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, used to tighten his waist belt (meaning either he works hard, or give up women) and used to pray all the night, and used to keep his family awake for the prayers. By Allah, they are easy days and numbered nights where the winners win and the losers lose.

The wife of Habib ibn Muhammad used to say to him at night, “the night has gone, the way is still far, our provision is little, the caravans of the righteous have departed before us and we have stayed.”

From the bliss of Allah Almighty on us is that He has made the night of the Decree one of the odd nights of the last ten days of the month of Ramadan. Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said, “the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Observe the Night of the Decree in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari]

«تحروا ليلة القدر في الوتر من العشر الأواخر من رمضان» رواه البخاري

The Night of the Decree is a great night and a grand chance. Worshipping in it is better in reward than worshipping in a thousand months. That is why the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “This month (the month of Ramadan) has come upon you; in it there is a night better than a thousand months, this who is deprived of its virtue, verily he is deprived of all good. He is not deprived of its virtue but a really deprived person.” [Al-Albani reported it with a good chain of transmission]

«إن هذا الشهر قد حضركم وفيه ليلة خير من ألف شهر من حرمها فقد حرم الخير كله ولا يحرم خيرها إلا محروم» الألباني، إسناده حسن

Strive, my Muslim sister, to observe the Night of the Decree and do not deprive yourself of this enormous reward. Know that if you perform optional night acts of worship in the whole ten nights and filled them with acts of worship and obedience, then inevitably, you have achieved the Night of the Decree. You have won the grand and the abundant rewards.

The supplication of the Night of the Decree

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said to the prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, “if I come across the Night of the Decree what should I say? He said, “Say: O Allah, You are Forgiving Who loves to forgive, so forgive me.” [Authenticated by Al-Albani]

«قولي: اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فأعف عني» صححه الألباني

Prayers and peace of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his family and companions.
