A whisper

The article speaks about music and its ruling.

There is a problem in our society, which repels us from the remembrances of Allah. It causes the slave of Allah to be heedless in Obeying Him. However, it is not a scientific dilemma, as many people know its ruling. The dilemma lies in taking actions and implementation. Shall I not tell you what the problem is?

It is insisting on listening to music and prohibited songs, which many people have become preoccupied with to the extent that it distracted them from a lot of important matters that help them in this worldly life and in the Hereafter. So, all this includes waste of time and money, persistence on sin, and the attachment of the heart to other than Allah. It beats my mind, O brothers, why are those people insisting on it. Do they doubt its prohibition? Are they weak in faith and intention? Or have they seen the leading reasons for it and thought that there is nothing wrong in listening to it? He was true the one who said, “Too many touches kill the feelings.” Therefore, whoever has any doubts about the prohibition of listening to music and songs, let him read some of the texts concerning this matter. They include the words of Allah Almighty, {And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allâh without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allâh, or the Verses of the Qur’ân) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-fire).} [Surat Luqmân 31:6]

Transliteration: Wamina alnnasi man yashtaree lahwa alhadeethi liyudilla AAan sabeeli Allahi bighayri AAilmin wayattakhithahahuzuwan olaika lahum AAathabun muheenun

The majority of the Quran interpreters said that the idle talk in this verse is songs and singing. Ibn Mas’ûd, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “By Allah, Who there is no other god but Him, this is singing.” He repeated this statement three times. The interpretation of a companion is evidence, as he is most informed and knowing of the Quran in word and meaning. Some scholars plead that it takes the ruling of the traceable Hadith.

It is reported in Sahîh Al-Bukhari that the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks, and the use of musical instruments as lawful.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari 5590]

«ليكوننَّ من أمَّتي أقوامٌ يستحلُّون الحرَّ والحرير والخمر والمعازف» رواه البخاري

The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has linked thinking music lawful to thinking illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, and the drinking of alcoholic drinks lawful. He vilified those people. Many other Hadiths are reported in the books of Sunnah. They indicate the prohibition of it as well as the warning to those who consider it lawful or insist upon it. Nevertheless, but for the fear of prolongation, I would have mentioned all of them, though the believer is sufficient with one authentic true evidence reported from the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him.

By his eminence Sheikh Muhammad ibn 'Uthaymîn, may Allah have mercy on him.
