Muharram

Since 2012-11-15

"The most excellent fast after Ramadan is God's month. al-Muharram,.." [Muslim]

In the name of Allah…

Praise be to Allah and peace be upon our prophet Muhammad the best of prophets who said after he fasted Ashura “When the next year comes, God willing, we would observe fast on the 9th” [Muslim]

And peace be upon the prophet's family and companions and upon all those who followed them.

Allah's month, Muharram (one of the lunar months), is the month of fasting

Dear beloved brothers:

You should know that there are some days and months in which Almighty Allah favors his Muslim servants with more kinds of obedience and good deeds and bestows great rewards on them, among these months, is Allah's month (Muharram) which has the following virtues:

Firstly: the prophet (peace be upon him) said "The most excellent fast after Ramadan is God's month. al-Muharram,.." [Muslim]

Secondly: fasting the day of Ashura (the tenth day of Muharram), when the prophet was asked about fasting the day of Ashura, he said: "It expiates the sins of the preceding year." [Muslim]

Note: it was called Ashura because it is the tenth day of the Muharram month.

O Muslims: Aushra is a day which the prophet (peace be upon him) has ordered us to fast in it, Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that when Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) came to Medina, he found the Jews observing the fast on the day of Ashura. They (the Jews) were asked about it and they said: It is the day on which Allah granted victory to Moses and (his people) children of Israel over the Pharaoh and we observe fast out of gratitude to Him. Upon this the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: We have a closer connection with Moses than you have, and he commanded to observe fast on this day." [Bukhari]

Also the prophet (peace be upon him) has ordered Muslims to be different from the Jews by fasting the day before Ashura, the prophet said " When the next year comes, God willing, we would observe fast on the 9th" [Muslim]

Habits and concepts that should be corrected on the day of Ashura:

Dear beloved brothers: the Almighty Allah said " And remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers." [Az-Zaryat 51:55]

{وَذَكِّرْ فَإِنَّ الذِّكْرَىٰ تَنفَعُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ}
Transliteration: Wa Dhakkir Fa'inna Adh-Dhikrá Tanfau Al-Mu'uminīna

The prophet (peace be upon him) said: " the religion is (to give) advice…." [Muslim]

So we would like to remind our brothers and sisters everywhere with following:

Firstly : the day of Ashura and the days of Muharram are among the glorified days on which the Muslim should observe much obedience, worship and righteous deeds and also avoid committing sins because these days are of the sacred months about Allah says: “…so do not wrong yourselves during them…” [At-Tawbah 9:36]

{...فَلَا تَظْلِمُوا فِيهِنَّ أَنفُسَكُمْ...}
Transliteration: Falā Tažlimū Fīhinna 'Anfusakum

Dear beloved brothers: some people (we ask Allah to guide them and all Muslims to right) made the day of Ashura an occasion for wailing, abusing and defaming the prophet's companions and the mothers of the faithful (the prophet's wives).

O Muslims: we should know that these offensive acts of wailing, abusing and defaming people are among the grave sins especially if this defaming was against the prophet's companions who are the best of the human being after prophets.

The prophet (peace be upon him) said: “whoever abused my companions, deserved the curse of Allah, angels and all people.” [Al-Albani]

He (peace be upon him) also said "the believer isn't the one who defames, curses, abuses or fouls (the people)” [Al-Albany said sound Hadith]

Secondly: the day of Ashura isn't an occasion for innovation, sadness, tearing the clothes or slapping the cheeks but it is for happiness with Allah's victory to Moses and his people over the pharaoh.

The Prophet said, "He who slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes and follows the ways and traditions of the Days of Ignorance is not one of us." [agreed upon]

The prophet also said “I dissociate myself from those women who cut their hair, loudly shout or tear their clothes (upon the calamity)." [Agreed upon]

We invoke Almighty Allah to bestow upon us the truthful love for the prophet's companions and support us to fast the day of Ashura.

And peace be upon you all.
