Excerpts about Ramadan

Since 2012-11-29

It was established in the agreed upon Hadith that the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said: “eat the meal of the Suhûr (the last light meal before dawn), surely there is a blessing in Suhûr.”

In the Name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

All praise be to Allah and prayers and peace of Allah be upon the best of mankind, our Prophet Muhammad and upon his family, companions and followers.

It was established in the agreed upon Hadith that the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said: “eat the meal of the Suhûr (the last light meal before dawn), surely there is a blessing in Suhûr.”

«تسحروا فإن في السحور بركة» متفق عليه

In this great Hadith the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, orders us of taking the Suhûr which is eating and drinking in the time before dawn, in preparation for fasting; and he mentions the reason of having the Suhûr which is the blessing.

The blessing is the descent of the Divine goodness into things, and confirming it, it is the increase in goodness and in reward, and in all that a slave needs of the benefits of this world and the Hereafter.

It is noticed on some fasting people that they do not care about the Suhûr or that they delay it, or they would miss it altogether, or maybe it is eaten in the middle of the night or before sleeping, either because of fear of not waking up, or that they wish to sleep for longer hours, or that because of their lack of interest in this meal and its blessing, or that because of their ignorance of its importance or for many other reasons.

This is a mistake that should be avoided by the fasting person because it contradicts the Sunnah, and it deprives from the blessing of Suhûr, so a fasting person should take the Suhûr, and delay it to when it is before dawn, even if it was a small meal because of its great blessings and good. And here, Oh fasting Muslim, are some excerpts about the blessings and secrets of Suhûr:

First: it is responding to the command of the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, it is enough of an honor and virtue to obey him. Allah Almighty has said: {He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad), has indeed obeyed Allâh} [Surat An-Nisâ’ 4:80],

Transliteration: Man yutiAAi alrrasoola faqad ataAAa Allaha

And: {And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad) gives you, take it} [Surat Al-Hashr :7],

Transliteration: wamaatakumu alrrasoolu fakhuthoohu

And He has said: {And whosoever obeys Allâh and His Messenger, he has indeed achieved a great achievement (i.e. he will be saved from the Hell-fire and will be admitted to Paradise)} [Surat Al-Ahzâb 33:71].

Transliteration: waman yutiAAi Allaha warasoolahu faqad faza fawzan AAatheeman

Second: Suhûr is the sign of Muslims, it contravenes with the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), as it differentiates between our fasting and theirs.

The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said: “The difference between our Fasting and that of the people of the Scripture is the meal taken before dawn.” [Reported by Muslim]

«فصل ما بين صيامنا وصيام أهل الكتاب أكلة السحر» رواه مسلم

Third: the occurrence of goodness and preserving it. Sahl ibn Sa’d As-Sa’di, may Allah be pleased with him, Reported that the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said: “The people will remain on the right path as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast and delay taking the Suhûr.” [Ibn Al-Molqen, Authentic]

«لا تزال أمتي بخير ما أخروا السحور وعجلوا الفطر» ابن ملقن، صحيح

Fourth: That in Suhûr there is strengthens for obedience, assistance to worship and an increase in activity and work, the hungry and thirsty lack the vigor to worship and work.

Fifth: Allah sends His Salât (Graces, Honors, Blessings, Mercy) on those who take the Suhûr and so do His angels (ask Allah to bless and forgive them). Abdullah ibn ‘Umar, may Allah have mercy on him, has Reported in the traceable Hadith: “Allah sends His Salât (Graces, Honors, Blessings, Mercy) on those who take the Suhûr and so do His angels (ask Allah to bless and forgive them)”. [Considered good by Al-Albani]

«فعن ابن عمر -رضي الله عنه- مرفوعًا: إن الله وملائكته يصلون على المتسحرين» حسنه الألباني

Sixth: the Suhûr repels bad manners which are being evoked by hunger.

Seventh: the time of Suhûr is a blessed time, it is the time when Allah descends to the first heaven – as befits His Glory – it is the time of answering invocations and the time of forgiveness. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said: “Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: “Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?” [Agreed upon]

«ينزل ربنا تبارك وتعالى إلى سماء الدنيا كل ليلة حين يبقى ثلث الليل الآخر فيقول: من يدعوني فأستجيب له، من يسألني فأعطيه، من يستغفرني فأغفر له» متفق عليه

Therefore the elite of the faithful, at this graceful time, are exposed to the grace and mercy of their Lord, so they start performing acts of worship in submissiveness to Him, beseeching and invoking Him for their demands which He has promised to respond to by the words of His Messenger, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him. So, whoever wakes up to take the Suhûr is worthy of getting this great benefit.

Eighth: The last hours of the night are of the best times for begging for forgiveness, if not the best, as Allah Glorified and Exalted has commended the people who ask for forgiveness at this time by saying: {and those who pray and beg Allâh’s Pardon in the last hours of the night} [Surat Aal-’Imrân 3:17]

Transliteration: waalmustaghfireena bialashari

And {And in the hours before dawn, they were (found) asking (Allâh) for forgiveness} [Surat Az-Zâriyât 51:18].

Transliteration: Wabialashari hum yastaghfiroona

So waking up for the Suhûr is a means of attaining this virtue and of gaining the different blessings of forgiveness.

Ninth: taking the Suhûr is a guarantee to answer the caller for the Fajr prayer, and following him; the reward on this is not hidden.

Tenth: it guarantees to perform the Fajr prayer in its due time in congregation, as the sleeper may lose performing the prayer on time.

It is well observed that the number of people who pray the Fajr in congregation in Ramadan is greater than any time else because of the Suhûr.

Eleventh: taking the Suhûr in itself is an act of worship if it is intended to assist in being pious in obeying Allah and in following the teachings of His Messenger, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him.

Twelfth: when a fasting person takes the Suhûr, he will not be bored of fasting, nevertheless, he will be eager to perform it contrary to those who miss the Suhûr, they find it hard to perform fasting.

Thirteenth: Allah Glorified and exalted bestows blessings in the deeds of the one who eats the Suhûr, so he is led to performing good deeds; fasting will not hinder him from performing prayers or saying the daily invocations, or from performing the optional acts of worship, and enjoining Al-Ma’rûf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbidding Al-Munkar (polytheism and disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden). If he misses the Suhûr then fasting will hinder him from performing good deeds.

The previous are the blessings of eating the Suhûr, as a whole the blessings of the Suhûr are abundant and cannot be calculated or beheld; Allah Glorified and Exalted has His wisdom and secrets by which the minds are confused. So we should remind ourselves of goodness and righteousness; so that we become of those who listen to words but follow the most virtuous of them.

Oh Allah, bestow upon us Your blessings and goodness, and grant us success in following the orders of Your Book and of the Sunnah of Your Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him. The last of our invocation is that all the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the ‘Alamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists).
