Among the Ethics of Shopping

Since 2012-11-20

My Muslim sister: following is a number of the indispensable precious advices. They are ethics by which you preserve virtue and chastity.

In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

All the praises and thanks be to Allah, and peace and blessings of Allah be upon the Messenger of Allah.

My Muslim sister: following is a number of the indispensible precious advices. They are ethics by which you preserve virtue and chastity. In addition, they let you shop safely from the harm of others.

Markets are the most loathed places by Allah, as has been said by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon, “The most lovable places on Earth to Allah are its mosques, and the most despised places on Earth to Allah are its markets.” [Reported by Muslim]

«أحب البلاد إلى الله مساجدها، وأبغض البلاد إلى الله أسواقها» رواه مسلم

The place which is hated by Allah deserves that a Muslim woman should not put her feet on except for an urgent need.

Beware of being alone with the driver when going to markets, as whenever a man is alone with a woman, devil is the third of them.

The Veil... wear the veil, as it is a safeguard for you from the gaze of those in whose hearts is a disease (of lustrous desires). It is protection from evil and a help for virtue. Observe and preserve it as ordered by Allah. Check it while getting out of the car and while walking. Do not leave a hole for poisonous gazes.

Beware of wearing perfume as it is a cause of temptation. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon, has said, “If a woman puts on perfume and passes by a gathering (of men) (so that they would smell her fragrance), then she is so and so”, meaning that she is an adulteress. [Authenticated by Al-Albani]

«المرأة إذا استعطرت فمرت بالمجلس فهي كذا وكذا. يعني: زانية» صححه الألباني

Remember that the hands and feet are parts of your body. So, observe, may Allah bless you, covering your feet with socks and hands with gloves or a mantle of long covering sleeves.

Beware of being soft in speech with male sellers, as it is a means of temptation. Allah Almighty has forbidden that; He has said, {then be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy, or evil desire for adultery) should be moved with desire,} [Surat Al-Ahzâb 33:32].

{فَلَا تَخْضَعْنَ بِالْقَوْلِ فَيَطْمَعَ الَّذِي فِي قَلْبِهِ مَرَضٌ} الأحزاب: 32

Transliteration: fala takhdaAAna bialqawli fayatmaAAa allathee fee qalbihi maradun

Do not enter a shop when it is empty from buyers, as this is safer and farer from temptation. Try to enter with an unmarriageable man, with women, or wait for others to enter to avoid being alone (with the male sellers).

Show to the seller that you are serious in buying. If the seller hears from you what indicates dignity and solemnity, his mind will be settled on that; thus, he will not dare saying words or doing gestures that afflict the hearts.

When you want to see what you want to buy do not uncover your face to look to it in front of the seller. Do that, however, in a corner of the shop or where no one can see you. Beware also not to try garments on in a shop. Try always to depend on the previous measures and sizes you have tried before. Beware of trying the shoes on before a seller in order not for your legs to appear.

Beware of neglecting prayers, especially the sunset prayer. Know that its due time ends by the starting time of the evening prayer. Allah Almighty has said, {Verily, As-Salât (the prayer) is enjoined on the believers at fixed hours.} [Surat An_Nisâ' 4:103], i.e. decreed in its specified time.

{إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَّوْقُوتًا} النساء: 103

Transliteration: inna alssalata kanat AAala almumineena kitaban mawqootan

Prayers and peace of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his family and companions.
