The keys of the good in Ramadan
Since 2012-11-22
The month of Ramadan is a blessed month; its value is tremendous, its bliss is abundant. The rewards for the acts of obedience are multiplied in Ramadan.
In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
All the praises and thanks be to Allah Alone, and prayers and peace of Allah be upon the Messenger of Allah and upon all his family, companions and his followers.
The month of Ramadan is a blessed month; its value is tremendous, its bliss is abundant. The rewards for the acts of obedience are multiplied in Ramadan. Multiplying the rewards for good deeds happens for reasons among which are: The nobility of the place such as the sacred place (Mecca), andThe nobility of the time such as the month of Ramadan and the first ten days of the month of Dhul Hijjah.
Therefore, it is worthy of the Muslim to increase performing acts of obedience in this month, to diversify the acts of worship; so that this might be a reason to forgiving sins, correcting slips and relieving worries.
The keys to good in this month are abundant, among which are:
1 – Sincerity to Allah, Glorified and Exalted
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Whoever observes fast during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards (not for showing off), then all his past sins will be forgiven.” [Agreed upon]
Al-Khatabi said, “His saying ‘faithfully out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards’ means that to intend to fast Ramadan out of believing with the hope of attaining the reward of Allah’s, willingly, without compulsion, and without feeling irritated from fasting or feeling that its days are long; however, he takes the chance of the its long days for the enormous reward”
Al-Baghawi said, “His saying ‘hoping to attain Allah’s rewards’ means asking for the reward for Allah’s sake, the Almight.” [Sahih At-Targhib: p. 582]
2 – Following not innovating in religion
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “If somebody innovates something which is not in harmony with the principles of our religion, that thing is rejected.” [Reported by Muslim: 1718]

Allah Almighty has said, {The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’ân, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong).} [Surat Al-Baqarah 2:185]
Transliteration: Shahru ramadana allathee onzila feehi alquranu hudan lilnnasi wabayyinatin mina alhuda waalfurqani
Ramadan is the month of the Quran. “The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was the most generous of all people, and he used to reach the peak in generosity in the month of Ramadan when he meets with Jibrîl [Gabriel]. Gabriel used to meet him every night of Ramadan to teach him the Quran.” [Agreed upon]
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “The fast and the Quran are two intercessors for the slave of Allah on the Day of Resurrection. The fast will say: ‘O My Lord, I have prevented him from his food and desires during the day, so let me intercede for him.’ The Quran will say: ‘I have prevented him from sleeping at night, so let me intercede for him.’ He said, ‘Their intercession will be accepted’.” [Reported by Ahmad, 10\118. Al-Albani said in Sahih At-Targhib, “it is authentic and good”]
6 – Increasing spending in charity
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, used to be “the most generous of all people, and he used to reach the peak in generosity in the month of Ramadan when he meets with Jibrîl [Gabriel]. And the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him was even more generous than the strong uncontrollable wind.” [Agreed upon]

The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Whoever breaks the fast of a fasting person will get his same reward without decreasing anything from the reward of that fasting person.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi: 807 and authenticated by Al-Albani]
8 – Working hard on the last ten days
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, “With the start of the last ten days of Ramadan used to tighten his waist belt (meaning either he works hard, or give up women) and used to pray all the night, and used to keep his family awake for the prayers.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari]
9 – Observing the Night of Al-Qadr (the Night of the Decree)
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said, “Observe the Night of Al-Qadr in the last ten days of Ramadan.” [Agreed upon]
Man is not completely observant unless by increasing performing acts of worship in all the ten nights.
4 – Observing prayers and remembrances at the Night of Al-Qadr
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said, “And whoever establishes the prayers on the night of Al-Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards (not to show off) then all his past sins will be forgiven.” [Agreed upon]
This will not positively happen but by establishing the prayers in all the ten nights out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards.
11 – Performing Umrah
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said, “Perform ‘Umrah when Ramadan comes, for ‘Umrah in Ramadan is equal (in reward) to a pilgrimage.” [Reported by Muslim]
in another narration, “for ‘Umrah in Ramadan is equal (in reward) to a pilgrimage with me.” [Reported by al-Bukhari 1863]

Allah Almighty has said, {and remember Allah much: that you may be successful.} [Surat Al-Jumu’ah 62:10]
Transliteration: waothkuroo Allaha katheeran laAAallakum tuflihoona
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “The Mufarradun have gone ahead. They (the Companions of the Prophet) said, ‘who are the Mufarradun? O Messenger of Allah!’ He said: They are those males and females who remember Allah much.” [Reported by Imam Muslim, 2676]
14 – Increasing the supplication to Allah
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Supplication is in itself an act of worship.” [Reported by Abu Dawud 1479, At-Tirmidhi 2969 and ibn Majah 3101. It is authenticated by Al-Albani]
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has also said, “there are three answered invocations: the invocation of the fasting person, the invocation of the oppressed and the invocation of the travelling person.” [Authenticated by Al-Albani 3030 in Sahih Aj-Jami’]
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has also said, “… and that for every Muslim in the day and night – i.e. in Ramadan – there is an answered invocation.” [Reported by Al-Albani 1002 in Sahih At-Targhib and he said, “it is authentic by the virtue of another Hadith.”]
15 – Hastening to breaking the fast
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “The people will remain on the right path as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast.” [Agreed upon]
16 – Observing the sahur (the last light meal before dawn) and delaying it
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “verily, all of the sahûr is blessing, so do not leave it, even if one of you just has a gulp of water, for indeed Allah, Glorified and Exalted, sends His Salât (Graces, Honors, Blessings, Mercy) on those who take the sahûr and so do His angels (ask Allah to bless and forgive them).” [Reported by al-Albani 1070, He said that it is good by the virtue of another Hadith]
The Sunnah is to delay taking the sahur. The time between the Prophet’s taking the sahur and the dawn prayer is as much as the time needed to read fifty verses of the Quran.
17 – Tolerance and turning away from the foolish
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “… and when any one of you is fasting on a day, he should neither indulge in obscene language, nor raise the voice; or if anyone reviles him or tries to quarrel with him he should say: I am a person fasting.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari]

18 – Quitting abominations
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)” [Reported by Al-Bukhâri 1903]
19 – Being patient in performing the acts of obedience
Here is a warning to those who are lenient in breaking the fast before sunset – even by a little time – as the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “While I was asleep, two men came and took me by the arm and set along… I saw people hanging by their heels; their mouths are cracked and bleeding heavily. He said, ‘I asked: who are those people?’ It was said, ‘those are the people who break their fast before it is due time to breaking the fast.’“ [Authenticated by Al-Albani 2393 in Sahih At-Targhib]
Be patient my Muslim brother, in completing the night optional prayers with the Imam; so that the reward of a night in prayers and remembrances be written in your book of deeds. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “He who prays with the Imam till he leaves, a night in prayers and remembering Allah will be written for him (in his book of deeds).” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi 806, An-Nasa’I 1363 and authenticated by Al-Albani]
20 – Guiding others to do good
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “The one who guides to something good has a reward similar to that of its doer.” [Reported by Muslim 1893]
Guiding to the good in Ramadan includes enlightening people about its virtues and the greatness of its benefits. When Ramadan entered upon people, the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, used to mention its virtues and urge people to benefit from its times. He said, “Here comes upon you the month of Ramadan where Allah, Glorified and Exalted, has enjoined upon you fasting it. When the month of ramadan starts, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained. In it there is a night for Allah better than a thousand months, this who is deprived of its virtue, verily he is deprived.” [Reported by An-Nasâ’I 2105 and authenticated by Al-Albani]
Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “Ramadan entered upon us so the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, said, “this month has come upon you and it has a night better than a thousand month. This who is deprived of its virtue, then he has been deprived of all good. Verily he who is deprived of its virtue is deprived.” [Reported by ibn Majah 1341. Al-Albani said, “it is good authentic.”]
21 – Observing the obligatory acts of worship and increasing performing the optional acts of worship
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “… My slave will not draw nearer to Me with anything more beloved to me than what I have obliged him to do. And My slave continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory works until I love him…” [Reported by Al-Bukhari 6502]
A man came to the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, and said, “O Messenger of Allah! What if I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah, I pray the five prayers, I fast the month, I performed the night prayers and remembrances in Ramadan, and I pay the zakat. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, said to him, “he who dies performing what you said will be among the Siddiqûn (those followers of the Prophets who were first and foremost to believe in them, like Abu Bakr As-Siddîq,) and the martyrs.” [Reported by ibn Khuzaymah 2212 and authenticated by Al-Albani]
22 – Observing the five prayers in congregation
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Prayer said in a congregation is twenty-seven degrees more excellent than prayer said by a single person.” [Reported by Muslim 650]
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has not permitted a blind man who has no one to show him the road to pray at home and leave the congregational prayer.
Ibn Masud, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “He who likes to meet Allah tomorrow as Muslim, he should persevere in observing these prayers, when a call is announced for them, for Allah has laid down for your Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, the paths of right guidance, and these (prayers) are among the paths of right guidance. If you were to pray in your houses as this heedless man who stays away (from the mosque) and prays in his house, you would abandon the Sunnah of your Prophet, and if you were to abandon the Sunnah of your Prophet, you would go astray. There is no man who purifies himself, doing it well, then makes for one of those mosques but that Allah will record a blessing for him for every step he takes, He will raise him a degree for it, and efface a sin from him. I have seen the time when no one stayed away from the congregational prayer, except a hypocrite, who was well known for his hypocrisy, whereas a man would be brought swaying (due to weakness) between two men till he was set up in a row.” [Reported by Muslim]
23 – Staying at the mosque till the sun rises
Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Whoever prays the dawn prayer in congregation, sits remembering Allah until the sun rises and then prays two rak’ahs is rewarded as the reward of a pilgrimage and a ‘umrah. He said, the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, ‘complete, complete, complete’.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi 586 and considered good by Al-Albani]
24 – Increasing sending Salât (Graces, Honors, Blessings, Mercy) on the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him
Allah Almighty has said, {O you who believe! Send your Salât on (ask Allâh to bless) him (Muhammad), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islâmic way of greeting (salutation i.e. As-Salâmu ‘Alaikum ).} [Surat Al-Ahzâb 33:56]
Transliteration: ya ayyuha allatheenaamanoo salloo AAalayhi wasallimoo tasleeman
and the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “He who sends his Salât on me once, Allah would send His Salât on him ten times.” [Reported by Muslim 384]

If you show mercy to those who are on the earth, He Who is in the heaven will show mercy to you.” [Reported by Abu Dawud 1924 and At-Tirmidhi 1924. It is authenticated by Al-Albani]
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has also said, “He who relieves a believer from a hardship of this worldly life Allah would relieve him from a hardship to which he might be put on the Day of Resurrection.” [Reported by Muslim 2699]
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Charity is obligatory everyday on every joint of a human being. If one helps a person in matters concerning his riding animal by helping him to ride it or by lifting his luggage on to it, all this will be regarded charity.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari 2891]
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “The one who looks after and works for a widow and for a poor person is like a Mujahid (warrior) who fights for Allah’s Cause. The narrator is not sure whether he also said, “Like the one who prays all the night without slackness and the one who fasts continuously and never breaks his fast.” [Agreed upon]
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “I and the one who looks after an orphan and provides for him will be like this in Paradise. And he showed his middle and index fingers and separated them a little” [Reported by Al-Bukhari 5304]
27 – Lowering the gaze to all that is forbidden
Allah Almighty has said, {Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts). That is purer for them. Verily, Allâh is All-Aware of what they do. (30) And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts)} [Surat An-Nûr 24:30-31]

28 – Bewaring of dissensions
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “The gates of Paradise are opened on Monday and Thursday, and then every slave of Allah is granted pardon who does not associate anything with Allah except the person in whose heart there is rancor against his brother. And it would be said: Look towards both of them until they are reconciled; look toward both of them until they are reconciled; look towards both of them until they are reconciled.” [Reported by Muslim 2565]
29 – Being economical in eating and drinking
This is one of the greatest keys to the good in Ramadan; because he who eats too much, drinks a lot, sleeps a lot and misses a lot of good. Allah Almighty has said, {and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance} [Surat Al-A’râf 7:31]

If it is inevitable (that he should fill his stomach), so let him leave a third (of his stomach) for his food, a third for drinking and a third for breathing.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi 2380 and authenticated by Al-Albani]
30 – Repenting and asking for forgiveness
Repenting and asking for forgiveness is what the month is received and bidden farewell with.
Allah Almighty has said, {And all of you beg Allâh to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful.} [Surat An-Nûr 24:31]
