Some supplications for the deceased...

 

 
- Exhorting the dying person to say Lâ ilâha illa-Allâh:
 
It was narrated that the Messenger of Allâh, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, said: “If a person’s last words are Lâ ilâha illa-Allâh (There is no God except Allâh), Paradise will be guaranteed for him.” [Reported by Abu Dâwûd (3116) and classed as Sahîh (authentic) by Al-Albâni]
 
«من كان آخر كلامه لا إله إلا الله دخل الجنّة» رواه أبو داود 3116 وصححه الألباني
 
 
- Supplication to be said if one is stricken with a calamity:
 
It was narrated that the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, said: “Verily to Allâh we belong and unto Him is our return. O Allâh, reward me for my affliction and compensate me with something better.” [Reported by Muslim (918)]
 
«إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون. اللهمّ! أجرني في مصيبتي وأخلف لي خيرًا منها» رواه مسلم 918
 
Transliteration: Inna Lillaahi wa inna ilayhi râji’oon, Allâhumma ajrni fi musibati wa khluf li Khayran minha.
 
 
- Supplication to be said when closing the eyes of the deceased:
 
It was narrated that the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, said: “O Allah! Forgive Aby Salamah [so-and-so (by his name)]; raise his rank among those who are rightly-guided; and take good care of his family that he has left behind. O Lord of the Realms! Forgive him and us, make his grave spacious, and put light therein for him.” [Reported by Muslim (920)]
 
«اللهمّ اغفر لفلان لأبي سلمة (باسمه) وارفع درجته في المهديين، واخلفه في عقبه في الغابرين. واغفر لنا وله يا ربّ العالمين. وافسح له في قبره. ونور له فيه» رواه مسلم 920
 
Transliteration: Allâhumma ighfir li – name of the deceased- warfa’ darajatuhu fi al-Mahdiyyn wakhlufuhu fi ‘Aqibih fi al-Ghâbreen, wa ighfir lana walahu ya rab al-’Alamên, wafsah lahu fi qabrih wanawir lahu feeh
 
 
- Supplication to be said at performing the funeral payer for the deceased:
 
It was narrated that the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, said: “O Allâh, forgive him and have mercy on him, keep him safe and sound and forgive him, honor the place where he settles and make his widen entrance; wash him with water and snow and hail, and cleanse him of sin as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Give him a house better than his house, a family better than his family and a wife better than his wife. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the torment of the grave (or the torment of Hell-fire).” [Reported by Muslim (963)]
 
«اللهمّ! اغفر له وارحمه وعافه واعف عنه، وأكرم نزله، ووسع مدخله واغسله بالماء والثّلج والبرد، ونقه من الخطايا كما نقيت الثّوب الأبيض من الدّنس، وأبدله دارًا خيرًا من داره. وأهلًا خيرًا من أهله وزوجًا خيرًا من زوجه، وأدخله الجنة وأعذه من عذاب القبر (أو من عذاب النّار)» رواه مسلم 963
 
Transliteration: Allâhumma ighfir lahu warhamhu wa ‘Aâfihi wa I’fu ‘anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassi’ madkhalahu waghsilhu bil mâ wal thalji wal barad, wa naqqihi min al-khatâya kama yunaqqa al-thawb al-abyad min ad-danas, wa abdilhu daran khayran min dârihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjih. Wa Adkhilhu al-jannah wa a’ithhu min ‘athâb il-qabri (or wa min ‘athâb in-naar)
 
And: “O Allâh, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present among us and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allâh, whoever You keep alive, keep him alive in Islam, and whoever You cause to die, cause him to die with faith. O Allâh, do not deprive us of the reward and do not cause us to go astray after him).” [Reported by Ibn Maajah (1226) and classed as Sahîh (Authentic) by Al-Albâni]
 
«اللهمّ اغفر لحينا وميتنا وشاهدنا وغائبنا وصغيرنا وكبيرنا وذكرنا وأنثانا، اللهمّ من أحييته منّا فأحيه على الإسلام ومن توفيته منّا فتوفه على الإيمان، اللهمّ لا تحرمنا أجره ولا تضلنا بعده» رواه ابن ماجه 1226 وصححه الألباني
 
Transliteration: Allâhumma ighfir lihâyina wa mayitina wa shâhidina wa ghâ’ibina wa saghîrina wa kabêrina wa thakarina wa unthâna. Allâhumma man ahyaytahu minna fa ahyihi ‘ala Al-Islam wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa tawiffahu ‘ala Al-eemaan.Allâhumma laa tahrimna ajrahu wa la tadillanaa ba’dahu
 
- And: “O Allah, so-and-so is under Your care and protection so protect him from the trial of the grave and torment of the Hellfire. Indeed, You are the Faithful and Truthful. Forgive and have mercy upon him, surely You are The Oft-Forgiving, The Most-Merciful.” [Reported by Ibn Majah (1227) and classed as Sahîh (authentic) by Al-Albâni]
 
«اللهمّ إن فلان بن فلان في ذمّتك وحبل جوارك، فقه من فتنة القبر وعذاب النّار وأنت أهل الوفاء والحقّ فاغفر له وارحمه إنّك أنت الغفور الرّحيم» رواه ابن ماجه 1227 وصححه الألباني
 
Transliteration: Allâhumma inna -name the dead- fee thimmatik, wahabli jiwaarik, faqihi min fitnat il-qabri wa ‘Athâb ‘innar, wa anta ahlul-wafâ, walhaq, faghfir lahu warhamh, innaka antal-Ghafooru Ar-Raheem
 
- And: “O Allâh, Your servant and the son of Your maidservant is in need of Your mercy and You are without need of his punishment. If he was righteous then increase his good deeds, and if he was a wrongdoer, then forgive him.” [It is classed as Sahîh (authentic) by Al-Albâni (159), in Ahkaam Al-Janaa’z]
 
«اللهمّ عبدك وابن أمتك احتاج إلى رحمتك، وأنت غنيٌّ عن عذابه، إن كان محسنًا فزد في حسناته، وإن كان مسيئًا فتجاوز عنه» صححه الألباني 159 في أحكام الجنائز
 
Transliteration: Allâhumma ‘Aabduka wabnu amatik, ‘ihtâja ilâ rahmatik, wa-anta ghaniyyun ‘Aan ‘Athâbih, In kâna muhsinan fa zid fi ihsânihi wa in kâna musean fa tajaawaz ‘anhu
 
 
- For advancement of reward during the funeral prayer:
 
It was narrated that the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, said: “O Allâh protect him from the torment of the grave.” [It is classed as Sahîh (authentic) by Al-Albâni (1631), in Takhreej Mishkaat Al-Masabâh]
 
«اللهمّ! أعذه من عذاب القبر» صححه الألباني 1631 في تخريج مشكاة المصابيح
 
Transliteration: Allâhumma a’ithh min ‘athâb il-qabri
 
And if one says:
 
“O Allâh, make him a preceding reward and a stored treasure for his parents, and an answered intercessor. O Allâh, through him, make heavy their scale and magnify their reward. Join him to the righteous believers, place him under the care of Ibrâhîm (Abraham), and protect him by Your mercy from the torment of Hellfire. O Allâh, give him a house better than his house, a family better than his family. O Allâh, forgive our predecessors, and those who preceded us in Faith,” then this is Ok.
 
And:
 
“O Allâh, make him a preceding reward, a prepayment and a recompense for us.” [Al-Albani, good chain of transmission Mawqoof (its chain traced back to a sahabi and not to the prophet peace be upon him)]
 
«اللهم اجعله لنا سلفا وفرطا وأجرا» الألباني، حسن الإسناد موقوفًا
 
Transliteration: Allâhumma aj’alhu lana faratan, wa salafan wa ‘Ajran
 
 
- Supplication to be said at offering condolences:
 
It was narrated that the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, said at offering condolences: “To Allâh belongs that which He has taken and that which He gives, and with Him everything has an appointed end,… so be patient and seek reward.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari (7377) and Muslim (923)]
 
«إن لله ما أخذ وله ما أعطى. وكل شيء عنده بأجلٍ مسمًّى،...فلتصبر ولتحتسب» رواه البخاري 7377 ومسلم 923
 
Transliteration: ‘Inna lillaahi maa akhatha, wa lahu mâa’tâ, wa kullu shayin ‘indahu bi’ajalin musamma . . . faltasbir waltahtasib
 
 
- Supplication to be said at placing the deceased in the grave:
 
It was narrated that the Messenger of Allâh, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, said: “In the name of Allâh and according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allâh.” [Reported by Abu Dâwûd (3213) and classed as Sahîh (authentic) by Al-Albâni]
 
«بسم الله وعلى سنّة رسول الله» رواه أبو داود 3213 وصححه الألباني
 
Transliteration: Bismillaah wa ‘ala sunnati Rasool-Illaah
 
 
- Supplication to be said after burying the deceased:
 
It was narrated that when the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, had finished burying the deceased he would stand at the graveside and say: “Pray for forgiveness for your brother and ask for him to be made steadfast, for now he is being questioned.” [Reported by Abu Dâwûd (3221) and classed as Sahîh (authentic) by Al-Albâni]
 
«استغفروا لأخيكم وسلوا له التّثبيت فإنّه الآن يُسأل» رواه أبو داود 3221 وصححه الألباني
 
 
- Supplication to be said at visiting graves:
 
It was narrated that the Messenger of Allâh, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, said: “Peace be upon the inhabitants of the graves, believers and Muslims. May Allâh have mercy upon those who have gone ahead of us and those who come later on, and verily we will, Allâh Willing, join you.” [Reported by Muslim (974)]
 
«السّلام على أهل الدّيار من المؤمنين والمسلمين ويرحم الله المستقدمين منّا والمستأخرين. وإنّا إن شاء الله، بكم للاحقون» رواه مسلم 974
 
Transliteration: Al-salaamu ‘ala ahl il-diyaar min al-mumineen wal Muslimên, wa yarham Allâh al-mustaqdimêna minna wal-mustakhireen, wa innâ in shâ Allâh bikum la lâhiqoon
