The purpose of this sermon
It is to warn against two serious diseases that most people get afflicted by after the end of the month of Ramadan, namely, slackening and relapse. This happens, usually, due to seeking relaxation from worship after its severity during Ramadan.
The condition of the righteous ancestors after Ramadan
- Ramadan is over. Whoever has won, has won; and whoever has lost, has lost. Ali ibn Abu Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, used to say in the last night of Ramadan, “I wonder, who is accepted (by Allah) to congratulate him? Who is deprived to console him?”
- The sadness of the righteous ancestors for parting with Ramadan: ibn Rajab, may Allah have mercy on him, narrated on the authority of Mu’alah bin Al-Fadhl that they used to supplicate Allah for six months to accept (the acts of worship of) Ramadan from them.
- Their preoccupation with the acceptance (of their deeds) although they have finished it: ibn ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, used to say, “If I knew that Allah has accepted a prostration from me, my happiness to meet death would be more than the happiness of the family for the return of their departed one.”
- They are those who are mentioned in a Quranic verse. Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said, “I asked the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, about this (the following Verse): {And those who give that (their charity) which they give (and also do other good deeds) with their hearts full of fear (whether their alms and charities have been accepted or not), because they are sure to return to their Lord (for reckoning).} [Surat Al-Mu’minûn 23:60] Aisha said, ‘Are these who drink alcoholic drinks and steal?” He replied, ‘No! O the daughter of As-Siddîq, but they are those who fast, pray, and practice charity and they are afraid that (their good) deeds may not be accepted (by Allâh) from them. It is these who hasten in the good deeds, and they are foremost in them [e.g. offering the compulsory Salât (prayers) in their (early) stated, fixed times and so on].” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi and classified as authentic by Al-Albani]
Beware after Ramadan
Beware of slackening and relapse. They are diseases that usually come due to seeking relaxation from worship after the end of Ramadan.
- Comfort is not in this worldly life. Imam Ahmed was asked, “When does the slave of Allah find the taste of comfort?” He answered, “Upon the first step he puts in Paradise.”
- Strive in this worldly life to find comfort in the Hereafter. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “How could I feel the comfort while the angel of the Trumpet has put it in his mouth, bowed his forehead, and is listening carefully. He is waiting to be ordered to blow it, so that he blows it.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi, classified as authentic by Al-Albani]
The disease of slackening and its effects
- Its definition: it is leniency after severity, weakness after strength. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Every deed has a time of vitality, and for every time of vitality there is a period of slackening. Therefore, whoever has the period of slackening directed to abiding by my Sunnah, then, he is guided. And whoever directs his period of slackening to anything else, then, he is doomed.” [Reported by Ahmed and Al-Albani said: Its chain of transmission is authentic based on the conditions of Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
- Its features include neglecting the congregation, the Fajr (dawn) prayer, reciting the Quran, and the Sunnah. It also includes hardheartedness and the dominance of the permissible.
Its reasons:
1- It is the lack of sincerity or its weakness in the time of hardship. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Verily, man may finish his prayer while what is recorded for him from it is only one tenth, ninth, eighth, seventh, sixth, fifth, fourth, third, or half.” [Reported by Abu Dawud and classified as good by Al-Albani]
He has also said, “The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. Therefore, whoever emigrated for Allah and His Messenger, then, his emigration is for Allah and His Messenger. Furthermore, whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration is for what he has emigrated for.” [Agreed upon]
2- The array of the worldly preoccupations: the family, properties, and the permissible recreation. Allah Almighty says, {Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world. But the good righteous deeds, that last, are better with your Lord for rewards and better in respect of hope.} [Surat Al-Kahf 18:46]
Transliteration:Almalu waalbanoona zeenatu alhayati alddunya waalbaqiyatu alssalihatu khayrun AAinda rabbika thawaban wakhayrun amalan
He also says, {Say (O Muhammad): “Who has forbidden the adornment with clothes given by Allâh, which He has produced for His slaves, and At-Taiyyibât [all kinds of Halâl (lawful) things] of food?” Say: “They are, in the life of this world, for those who believe, (and) exclusively for them (believers) on the Day of Resurrection (the disbelievers will not share them).” Thus We explain the Ayât (Islâmic laws) in detail for people who have knowledge.} [Surat Al-A’râf 7:32]

And, {O you who believe! Verily, among your wives and your children there are enemies for you (who may stop you from the obedience of Allâh); therefore beware of them!} [Surat At-Taghâbun 64:14]

The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Children are causes for miserliness, cowardice, ignorance, and sadness.” [Classified as authentic by Al-Albani]
In the Hadith of Hanzala Al-Usayyidi, who was amongst the scribes of the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, where he reported, “I met Abu Bakr and he said, ‘How are you Hanzalah?’ He (Hanzala) said, ‘Hanzala has turned to be a hypocrite.’ He (Abu Bakr) said, ‘Glorified and Exalted is Allah, what are you saying?’ Thereupon he said, ‘I say that because when we are in the company of the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, we ponder over Hellfire and Paradise as if we are seeing them with our very eyes. However, when we are away from the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, we attend to our wives, our children, our business; most of these things (pertaining to Afterlife) slip out of our minds. Abu Bakr said, ‘By Allah, I also experience the same.’ So Abu Bakr and I went to the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him. I said to him, ‘O Messenger of Allah, Hanzala has turned to be a hypocrite.’ Thereupon the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, ‘What has happened to you?’ I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, when we are in your company, we are reminded of Hellfire and Paradise as if we are seeing them with our own eyes. However, whenever we go away from you and attend to our wives, children and business, much of these things go out of our minds. Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, ‘By Him in Whose Hand is my life, if your state of mind remains the same as it is in my presence, and you are always busy in the remembrance (of Allah), the Angels will shake hands with you in your beds and in your paths. Nevertheless, O Hanzala, a time (should be devoted to the worldly affairs) and a time (should be devoted to prayer and meditation).’ The Prophet said this thrice.” [Reported by Muslim]
Allah, Glorified and Exalted, says, {In houses (mosques) which Allâh has ordered to be raised (to be cleaned, and to be honoured), in them His Name is remembered [i.e. Adhan, Iqamah, Salât (prayers), invocations, recitation of the Qur’ânetc].. Therein glorify Him (Allah) in the mornings and in the afternoons or the evenings, (36) Men whom neither trade nor sale (business) diverts from the Remembrance of Allâh (with heart and tongue), nor from performing As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât), nor from giving the Zakât. They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will be overturned (out of the horror of the torment of the Day of Resurrection). (37) That Allâh may reward them according to the best of their deeds, and add even more for them out of His Grace. And Allâh provides without measure to whom He wills.} [Surat An-Nûr 24:36-38]

3- Returning to accompanying the lazy: the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Man follows the creed of his close friends, so you should consider whom to befriend.” [Reported by Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi, and Al-Albani said its chain of transmission is good]
In addition, Allah Almighty says, {And keep yourself (O Muhammad) patiently with those who call on their Lord (i.e. your companions who remember their Lord with glorification, praising in prayers, and other righteous deeds) morning and afternoon, seeking His Face; and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of the world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our Remembrance, and who follows his own lusts, and whose affair (deeds) has been lost.} [Surat Al-Kahf 18:28]

The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “The example of a good companion (who sits with you) in comparison with a bad one, is like that of the musk seller and the blacksmith’s bellows (or furnace). From the musk seller you would either buy musk or enjoy its good smell, while the blacksmith’s bellows would either burn your clothes, or you get a bad nasty smell thereof.” [Agreed upon]
4- Keeping lonely, and away from the congregation, the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “… So observe (prayer) in congregation, for the wolf eats only the straggling animal.” [Reported by Abu Dawud and classified as good by Al-Albani]
He, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has also said, “A believer to another believer is like a building whose different parts enforce each other.” [Agreed upon]
Its cure
- Renovating the faith and taking good care of it. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “There is not a heart but that it has a cloud like the cloud above the moon. While the moon is shining, a cloud covers it. When it goes away, it shines again.” [It is classified as good by Al-Albani]
- Frequent reckoning and observation, Allah Glorified and Exalted, says, {O you who believe! Fear Allâh and keep your duty to Him. And let every person look to what he has sent forth for the morrow, and fear Allâh. Verily, Allâh is All-Aware of what you do.} [Surat Al-Hashr 59:18]

Mu’âdh, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “As for me, I sleep and I wake up. I sleep for the sake of Allah and I wake up for His sake.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
- Working for the religion of Allah, Allah Almighty says, {Arise and warn!} [Surat Al-Muddaththir 72:2],
Transliteration:Qum faanthir
He, Glorified and Exalted also says, {Enjoin you Al-Birr (piety and righteousness and each and every act of obedience to Allâh) on the people and you forget (to practise it) yourselves, while you recite the Scripture [the Taurât (Torah)]! Have you then no sense?} [Surat Al-Baqarah 2:44]
Transliteration:Atamuroona alnnasa bialbirri watansawna anfusakum waantum tatloona alkitaba afala taAAqiloona
- Taking responsibility in performing binding deeds, the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Whoever prays for the sake of Allah for forty days in the congregation, witnessing the first takbîr (to say “allahu-akbar, (Allah is the greatest)), two immunities will be written for him: immunity from Hellfire, and immunity from hypocrisy.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi and classified as good by Al-Albani]
These deeds may include a prescribed part of the Quran, attending religious councils, performing the Adhan (call for prayer), cleaning the mosque, and a lot more.
- Keeping on performing the deeds, the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “The most loved deeds for Allah Almighty are the most continuous even if they are little”. [Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Remember your state before Ramadan, during it, and after it has ended.
The disease of relapse
- Its definition: it is to turn from the truth to being astray. Allah Almighty says, {Then they turned to themselves (their first thought and said): “Indeed you [Ibrâhîm (Abraham)] know well that these (idols) speak not!”} [Surat Al-Anbiyâ’ 21:65]
Transliteration: Thumma nukisoo AAala ruoosihim laqad AAalimta ma haolai yantiqoona
It has many aspects after the end of Ramadan. They include returning to the wanton display of women, smoking, listening to songs, corrupt media, and immorality; accompany the evildoers after the readers of the Quran, going to the cafe after the mosque, the cigarette after the siwak (the Araak toothbrush) , and the song after the Quranic verse.
Examples
Allah Almighty says, {And recite (O Muhammad) to them the story of him to whom We gave Our Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), but he threw them away; so Shaitân (Satan) followed him up, and he became of those who went astray. [175]. And had We willed, We would surely have elevated him therewith but he clung to the earth and followed his own vain desire. So his parable is the parable of a dog: if you drive him away, he lolls his tongue out, or if you leave him alone, he (still) lolls his tongue out. Such is the parable of the people who reject Our Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). So relate the stories, perhaps they may reflect.} [Surat Al-A’râf 7:175-176]

That is how he got lost and how he led others to be astray:
- The worst descriptions: alienation, the falling, mud, the devouring of the devil, straying, there is no way with him because he is always gasping.
- It was among the supplication of the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, that he used to say, “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from Knowledge which does not profit, and a heart which is not submissive.” [Reported by Muslim]
- Relapse and doom: the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “The most thing that I fear for you is a man who had read the Quran, and when its glory was seen on him and he was a defender of Islam, he changed it to what Allah wishes, detached himself from it, and discarded it behind his back.” [Classified as good by Al-Albani]
Its cure:
- Immediate repentance: Allah Almighty says, {“And turn in repentance and in obedience with true Faith (Islâmic Monotheism) to your Lord and submit to Him (in Islâm) before the torment comes upon you, (and) then you will not be helped. (54)“And follow the best of that which is sent down to you from your Lord (i.e. this Qur’ân, do what it orders you to do and keep away from what it forbids), before the torment comes on you suddenly while you perceive not!”(55) Lest a person should say: “Alas, my grief that I was undutiful to Allâh (i.e. I have not done what Allâh has ordered me to do), and I was indeed among those who mocked [at the truth! i.e. Lâilâhaillallâh (none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh), the Qur’ân, and Muhammad and at the faithful believers] (56) Or (lest) he should say: “If only Allâh had guided me, I should indeed have been among the Muttaqûn (the pious).”(57) Or (lest) he should say when he sees the torment: “If only I had another chance (to return to the world), then I should indeed be among the Muhsinûn (good-doers).} [SuratAz-Zummar 39:54-58]

- Hasten in repentance or else, the remorse: Allah Glorified and Exalted says, {till when drowning overtook him, he said: “I believe that none has the right to be worshipped but He (Allâh) in Whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am one of the Muslims (those who submit to Allâh’s Will).” [90] Now (you believe) while you refused to believe before and you were one of the Mufsidûn (evil-doers, the corrupters).} [Surat Yûnus 10:90-91]
