Revival of Sunnah - #3 The Sunnahs of Adhan

Since 2014-09-21

Adhan is a great form of worship that isn’t just related to the Muaddin (the one who calls for Adhan), but there are five things that every Muslim can do once he hears the Adhan:

  • First: Repeating after the Adhan. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: «Whenever you hear the Adhan, say what the Mu'adh-dhin is saying» (Bukhari); except when he says "Haiyi `alassala, Hayya ala Al-Falah", we say: "La hawla wala quwwata ella billah" because in a hadith "When the Mu'adhdhin said, 'Haiyi `alassala (come for the prayer)', Muawiya said: 'La hawla wala quwata illa billah (There is neither might nor any power except with Allah)', and added: 'We heard your Prophet say the same' " (Bukhari).
  • Second: After the Adhan is over we send Salat upon the Prophet (i.e say “Allahumma salli ala sayyidina Mohamad”). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: «… Then send Salat upon me, because whoever sends Salat upon me, Allah will send Salat upon him ten times due to it» (Muslim).
  • Third: Ask Allah to give Prophet Mohamad 'Al-Wasila'. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: « ... Then ask Allah that He gives me Al-Wasilah, because it is a place in Paradise which is not for anyone except for a slave from the slaves of Allah, and I hope that I am him. And whoever asks that I have Al-Wasilah, then (my) intercession will be made lawful for him» (Muslim).
  •  Fourth: Recite Al-Shahada, and declare your acceptance of Allah, his messenger, and Islam. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: «If anyone says on hearing the Mu'adhdhin: I testify that there is no god but Allah alone. Who has no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger, (and that) I am satisfied with Allah as my Lord, with Muhammad as Messenger. and with Islam as din (code of life), his sins would be forgiven» (Muslim).
  • Fifth: Make Duaa and ask Allah for whatever you want, inshalah your prayers will be answered. A man said: "Oh Messenger of Allah, the mu'adhdhins excel us". The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: «Say (the same words) as they say, and when you come to the end, make a petition and that will be granted to you» (Abu Daoud, Nasai, Ahmad).

And do not forget our motto:

{وَإِنْ تُطِيعُوهُ تَهْتَدُوا}

Translation: {And if you obey him, you will be (rightly) guided} [An-Nur:54].
