Since 2012-11-25
Peace is the greeting of the people of Islam which has been prescribed by Allah for the Muslims amongst themselves. It is the right of a Muslim upon his Muslim brother.
In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
All praise and thanks be to Allah and peace and blessings of Allah be upon the Messenger of Allah.
Peace is the greeting of the people of Islam which has been prescribed by Allah for the Muslims amongst themselves. It is the right of a Muslim upon his Muslim brother.
The prescribed greeting is to verbally utter the complete form by saying: As-SalamuAlaikumwa-rahmatu-l-lahiwa-barakatuhu (peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you).
The etiquette of the greeting is that the rider greets the walker, the walker greets the sitting, the small group greets the bigger one, the young greets the old, and the one entering a place greets those who are inside it.
When a man meets his friend they suffice with shaking hands with uttering the greeting. They should leave embracing but only when coming from travel where embracing will be preferable.
Greeting upon entering a council and upon leaving it: the first greeting is announcing entering the council and the second one is announcing leaving it. This is from the fine etiquette that bequeaths love among the believers.
It is from complete hospitality to meet the guest with good humor at first sight, entertaining with fine talk when serving food and bidding him farewell when leaving.
It is from the etiquette of councils not to sit in a state that shows ill-behavior; like lying down while the others are sitting; except for an excuse, or like putting the foot in front of their faces or the like.
It is from the etiquette of councils not to do anything that is in contravention to taste such as picking the teeth or the nose, frequent hemming and chuckling and tampering with the beard or the mustache. It is fit of a Muslim to be prestigious, dignified and polite.
Acknowledge the status of the old and their right in walking, entering, leaving, meeting, enjoying, discussing and debating.
Keeping away from calumny: it is transferring news among people to corrupt amongst them. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said, “The qattât will not enter Paradise” i.e. calumniator. [Reported by Al-Bukhari]
«لا يدخل الجنة قتات» رواه البخاري
On the same line, the Muslim must keep away from backbiting, as it has serious harms.
It is also from the etiquette of councils to maintain the invocation of the 'Expiation of the Council'. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said, “he who sat in a council where he clamored a lot, and he said before he gets up from that same council: subhânakallâhummawabihamdik, ashhaduannalâilâhailla anta, astaghfirukawaatûbuelayka (Glorified O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no god except You. I ask You for forgiveness and I repent to You) but that everything occurred in that council will be forgiven for him.” [Sahîh al-Jâmi' (the Authentic Collection): 6068].
«من جلس في مجلس ، فكثر فيه لغطه ، فقال قبل أن يقوم من مجلسه ذلك : سبحانك اللهم ربنا و بحمدك ، أشهد أن لا إله إلا أنت ، أستغفرك و أتوب إليك ، إلا غفر له ما كان في مجلسه ذلك» صحيح الجامع
It is from the Sunnah that the visitor of the sick supplicates Allah to grant him recovery and convalescence. When the messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, entered upon the sick to visit him, he used to say, “Don't be afraid! It is purifying, Allah willing.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari]
