Calm conversation between Abdullah & Abdel-Naby

Since 2012-11-18

A man called Abdullah met another man called Abdel-Naby. Abdullah’s heart disapproved this name, Abdel-Naby, and said: “How could a man worship other than Allah the Almighty?” Then he asked Abdel-Naby: “Do you worship other than Allah?” “No, I worship none but Allah. I am Muslim and I worship Allah alone.” Abdel-Naby replied.

Calm conversation between Abdullah & Abdel-Naby

All Praise is due to Allah … May Allah’s prayers and peace be upon the messenger of Allah peace be upon him and his family and company.

“So, what is about this name which resembles the Christian names, they are used to name Abdel-Maseh. To the Christians, this is logical because they worship Jesus peace be upon him. And whoever hears your name would think that you worship the prophet peace be upon him. This is not the Muslim creed concerning his prophet; instead he must believe that Muhammad is Allah’s servant and messenger.” Abdullah said.

“However Prophet Muhammad -peace be upon him- is the best human being and the master of the messengers. We name ourselves by this name as a kind of seeking blessing and nearness to Allah by the rank of his prophet peace be upon him. We ask Prophet Muhammad for intercession because of his rank. Do not be astonished, my brother's name is Abdel-Hussain, and my father's name is Abdel-Rasoul. Having these names is an old tradition, our ancestors did so, therefore do not be extremist it is a trivial issue and our religion is simple.” Abdel-Naby said.

Abdullah said: “This is another ill deed, and it is greater than the first one. How could you ask from other than Allah what none but Him can do it, whether what you have asked from is prophet Muhammad peace be upon him or any other righteous person such as Al-Hussain may Allah be pleased with him! This is contrary to monotheism and the meaning of ‘There is no true God but Allah’”

“I will ask you several questions to understand the gravity of this issue and the consequences of having such names. I seek nothing but showing the right and following it, showing the vicious and avoiding it, enjoining Al-Ma‘rûf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbidding Al-Munkar (polytheism and disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden). And it is Allah whose help can be sought. First; I would like to remind you by the saying of Allah almighty: “The only statement of the [true] believers when they are called to Allah and His Messenger to judge between them is that they say, {We hear and we obey.}” [An-Nur 24:51]

Transliteration: Innama kana qawla almumineena itha duAAoo ila Allahi warasoolihi liyahkuma baynahum an yaqooloo samiAAna waataAAna

And His saying: {And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger} [An-Nisa’ 4:59]

Transliteration: fain tanazaAAtum fee shayin faruddoohu ila Allahi waalrrasooli

“You said that you worship Allah alone and bear testimony that 'there is no true God but Allah'. Hence, could you explain its meaning?”

“Monotheism is to believe that Allah is present and that He is the creator of the sky and the earth, the One Who gives life and takes it, the One Who manages the whole universe and the One Who gives provisions…etc.” Abdel-Naby said.

Abdullah said: “If this alone was the meaning of monotheism, then pharaoh and his people and Abu-Jahl and the other disbelievers would have been believers, because there is no body denies what you have mentioned. Even pharaoh, who claimed to be God, was convincing and believing in himself that Allah is there and that He manages the universe. Allah Almighty says: {And they rejected them, while their [inner] selves were convinced thereof, out of injustice and haughtiness.} [An-Naml 27:14]

Transliteration: Wajahadoo biha waistayqanatha anfusuhum thulman waAAuluwwan

This confession emerged clearly when drowning overtook him.

However, monotheism is worshipping Allah alone. Worshipping means whatever Allah likes of word or deed whether it is apparent or in heart. The 'true God' in 'there is no true God but Allah' refers to the One that there is no act of worshipping could be done to other than Him.

Do you know why had messengers been sent?”

“To call the polytheists for worshipping Allah alone and abandoning any partner to Him.” Abdel-Naby said.

“Why were the people of Noah polytheists?” Abdullah asked.

“I do not know.” Abdel-Naby replied.

“Allah had sent Noah to his people when they overstated the righteous persons; Wadd, Suwa‘, Yaghuth, Ya‘uq and Nasr” Abdullah said.

“Do you mean that Wadd, Suwa‘, Yaghuth, Ya‘uq and Nasr are names for righteous people, and are not names for disbeliever titans?” Abdel-Naby asked.

Abdullah said: “Yes. Those are names of righteous persons whom people of Noah had taken as Gods, and then Arab followed them in doing so. Al-Bukhary mentioned that Bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father too, said: “After Noah people was gone, their statues had been adopted by the Arab. Wadd was adopted by Kalb tribe in Dawmat El-Gandel, Suwâ was adopted by Huzail tribe, Yaghûth was adopted by Murad tribe then Bani Ghotaif in Al-Jawf (in Saba'), Ya‘ûq was adopted by Hamadan tribe, Nasr was adopted by The-l Kelaa linage in Hemiar tribe. They were names for righteous persons of Noah people. When they died (those righteous persons) Satan incited their people to build monuments in the places that they used to set on and give them (the monuments) their names. They did so and did not worship it. After their death and the passing of years those monuments had been worshiped.”

“This is a strange subject!” Abdel-Naby said.

“Would I tell you something stranger? Allah has sent the last messenger, Muhammad peace be upon him, to people that worship, perform pilgrimage and spend charity, but they had some creatures (e.g., Jesus peace be upon him, and other righteous persons) as intercessors between themselves and Allah. They were saying: "We want nearness to Allah by them, and seek their intercession with Him. Therefore, Allah almighty sent Muhammad, peace be upon him, to renew to them the religion of their father Abraham, peace be upon him, and to tell them that worship is a mere right to Allah Alone; He is the only Creator with no partner, The only provider, The Master of all skies and earths and their inhabitants; they all are His servants, they are subject to His will and power. They (Mecca disbelievers) even confessed that the gods they worshipped are under His power and will.” Abdullah said.

“This is a strange and dangerous subject. Is there any evidence to it?” Abdel-Naby wondered.

Abdullah replied: “There are many evidences including Allah's saying: {Say, "Who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? Or who controls hearing and sight and who brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living and who arranges [every] matter?" They will say, " Allah," so say, "Then will you not fear Him?}” [Yunus 10:31]

The polytheists used to say in their pilgrimage: “O Allah, here we are responding to your call. Oh God, (we witness that) there are no partners with You except a partner is subject to You, You own him and what he owned." The confession of Quraish pagans that Allah is the sovereign of the universe (or what is called the monotheism of Godhead 'Tawheed Al-Rebubiah') did not make them Muslims. Instead, their seeking angels, prophets or the righteous persons for intercession and nearness to Allah is the reason of making their blood and properties permissible. Therefore, prayers, vows and sacrifice must be to Allah alone, moreover seeking help and all kinds of worship must be to Allah alone.”

“If the monotheism, which is called for by the messengers, was not the confession of the presence of Allah and His sovereignty (according to what you say), then what is it?” Abdel-Naby said.

“The monotheism that is called for by all messengers and the polytheists refused to confess is worshipping Allah alone. It means that no kind of worship (e.g. Pray, vow, sacrifice, seeking help…etc.) could be done to other than Him. This kind of monotheism is the meaning of your saying 'There is no true God but Allah'. The god according to the creed of Quraish pagans is the one whom is sought for the previous mentioned purposes, whether it is angel, prophet, righteous person, tree, grave or jinn. They did not mean by the god the Creator, the Provider and the All Determiner, because they already knew that this is for Allah only as I mentioned before. The prophet, peace be upon him, came to call them to the word of monotheism 'There is no true god but Allah.' and what is meant is its essence not just parroting it.”

“It seems that you want to say that Quraish pagans knew the meaning of 'There is no true god but Allah' better than many of the contemporary Muslims.” Abdel-Naby said.

“Unfortunately, this is completely true. The ignorant pagans knew that the prophet, peace be upon him, meant by this word worshipping Allah alone, and disbelieving whomever is worshiped instead of Him. When the prophet, peace be upon him, said to them; 'say there is no true god but Allah', although their belief that Allah is the sovereign of the universe, they said: {Has he made the gods [only] one God? Indeed, this is a curious thing.} [Sad 38:5]

Transliteration: AjaAAala alalihata ilahan wahidan inna hatha lashayon AAujabun

If the pagans of Quraish knew this, what would we say about who claims to be Muslim and does not know about the meaning of this word what the ignorant pagans knew! Some Muslims think it is for parroting only, and those who have more knowledge think that it means none can create, provides, and disposes the affair of all things but Allah. Actually, there is no good in people claim to be Muslim while the ignorant pagans of Quraish know the meaning of 'There is no true god but Allah' better than them.” Abdullah said.

“However, I worship none but Allah. I bear testimony that there is no one can create, provide, help or hurt but Allah alone. Moreover I bear testimony that Muhammad, peace be upon him, does not have the power to harm or benefit himself. This is applicable to Ali, Al-Hussain Abdel-Qader…etc. But I am sinful and the righteous persons have an exalted position, therefore I intercede to Allah by their exalted position.” Abdel-Naby said.

“I will reply upon you by what is mentioned earlier. The prophet, peace be upon him, fought whom said what you said, and knew that their statues do nothing; they only wanted intercession and nearness to Allah. We gave evidence to this from the holly Quran.” Abdullah said.

“However these verses are about those who worship statues. How could you make the righteous people equal to the statues? How could you make the prophets statues?” Abdel-Naby said.

Abdullah said: “We knew earlier that some of these statues were called by the names of righteous persons (e.g. the time of Noah peace be upon him) and the disbelievers wanted nothing from them except intercession with Him because of their exalted position. The evidence is Allah’s almighty saying: {And those who take protectors besides Him [say], "We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allah in position.} [Az-Zumar 39:3]

Transliteration: waallatheena ittakhathoo min doonihi awliyaa ma naAAbuduhum illa liyuqarriboona ila Allahi zulfa

As for your saying ‘How could you make the righteous persons and the prophets statues?’ I say to you; some of the disbelievers, to whom the prophet peace be upon him was sent, was worshipping the righteous persons. Allah said about those: {Those whom they invoke seek means of access to their Lord, [striving as to] which of them would be nearest, and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is ever feared.} [Al-Isra’ 17:57]

Transliteration: Olaika allatheena yadAAoona yabtaghoona ila rabbihimu alwaseelata ayyuhum aqrabu wayarjoona rahmatahu wayakhafoona AAathabahu inna AAathaba rabbika kana mahthooran

Others were worshipping Jesus, peace be upon him, and his mother. Allah almighty said about those: {And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?} [Al-Maidah 5:116]

Transliteration: Waith qala Allahu ya AAeesa ibna maryama aanta qulta lilnnasi ittakhithoonee waommiya ilahayni min dooni Allahi

Others were worshipping the angels. Allah almighty said about those: {And [mention] the Day when He will gather them all and then say to the angels, "Did these [people] used to worship you?"} [Saba 34:40]

Transliteration: Wayawma yahshuruhum jameeAAan thumma yaqoolu lilmalaikati ahaolai iyyakum kanoo yaAAbudoona

Consider these verses and you will know that Allah counted those who seek the statues, the righteous prophets, angels or persons as disbelievers. Moreover, the prophet peace be upon him fought them all without distinction.”

Abdel-Naby said: “The disbelievers ask the statues, but I bear testimony that Allah is the Benefactor, the Harmer and the Disposer of the affair of all things. I ask no one but Allah almighty. I know well that the righteous persons have nothing to do, but I seek them for intercession with Allah.”

“This is exactly what the disbelievers said, and the evidence is Allah’s almighty saying: {And they worship other than Allah that which neither harms them nor benefits them, and they say, "These are our intercessors with Allah "} [Yunus 10:18]” Abdullah said.

Transliteration: WayaAAbudoona min dooni Allahi ma la yadurruhum wala yanfaAAuhum wayaqooloona haolai shufaAAaona AAinda Allahi

“However, I worship none but Allah, and seeking them and invoking them are not worship!” Abdel-Naby said.

“However, I ask you: ‘Do you confess that Allah obliged you to invoke Him only making your worship sincere to Him? As He almighty says: {And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth,} [Al-Baiyinah 98:5]” Abdullah said.

Transliteration: Wama omiroo illa liyaAAbudoo Allaha mukhliseena lahu alddeena hunafaa

“Yes, I am obliged to do so.” Abdel-Naby replied.

“And I ask you to articulate to me what Allah has obliged you to do_ making your worship sincere to Him?” Abdullah asked.

“I do not know.” Abdel-Naby replied.

“I will articulate that to you, so listen to me attentively. Allah almighty said: {Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors.} [Al-Ar’af 7:55]

Transliteration: OdAAoo rabbakum tadarruAAan wakhufyatan innahu la yuhibbu almuAAtadeena

Therefore, is invoke worship to Allah almighty?” Abdullah asked.

“Yes, it is worship and it is its core, the prophet says: ‘invoke is the worship’ [Narrated by Abu-Dawud and Tirmizi, and approved by Al-Albany].” Abdel-Naby replied.

“As long as you confessed that it is worship to Allah and you invoked Him day and night with fear and hope for something, if you invoked a prophet, angel or righteous dead person for this thing, would you be Polytheist or not?” Abdullah said.

“Of course, I would be Polytheist. This is logical.” Abdel-Naby replied.

There is another example, if you knew Allah’s order: {So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].} [Al-Kauthar 100:2]

Transliteration: Fasalli lirabbika wainhar

And obeyed it for Him; is this worship for Him almighty?” Abdullah said.

“Yes, it is worship.” Abdel-Naby said.

“Then, if you sacrificed to a creature, whether it is prophet or jinn, would it be setting up partners with Him in worship?” Abdullah said.

“Yes, surly it is polytheism.” Abdel-Naby replied.

“I gave you examples by invoke and sacrifice, because invoke is the peak of the verbal worships and sacrifice is the peak of the doable worships. Worship is not just invoke and sacrifice, instead it is more general and includes vow, swear, seeking help…etc. However, were the pagans, in whom the Holy Quran was revealed, worshipping the angels, righteous persons, Allat…etc.?” Abdullah said.

“Yes, they did.” Abdel-Naby said.

“Was not their worship to those partners confined in invoke, sacrifice and seeking help? They confessed that they are His slaves and are subject to Him, and that it is He who disposes the affairs, but they invoked them and sought their help for intercession and nearness to Allah. This is very clear.” Abdullah said.

“O Abdullah, do you deny the intercession of the messenger of Allah peace be upon him?” Abdel-Naby asked.

“No, I do not deny it. He (Muhammad peace be upon him) is the intercessor whom his intercession will be accepted, and I seek his intercession. However to Allah belongs all intercession; Allah almighty said: {To Allah belongs [the right to allow] intercession entirely.} [Az-zumar 39:44]

Transliteration: Qul lillahi alshshafaAAatu jameeAAan

Moreover, it is after Allah’s permission as He almighty said: {Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission?} [Al-Baqarah 2:255]

Transliteration: man tha allathee yashfaAAu AAindahu illa biithnihi

And it will be for those whom He is pleased; Allah almighty says: {and they cannot intercede except for him with whom He is pleased} [Al-Anbiya 21:28]

Transliteration: wala yashfaAAoona illa limani irtada

And He accepts nothing but monotheism, he almighty said: {And whoever desires other than Islam as religion - never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.} [Al-Imran 3:85]

Transliteration: Waman yabtaghi ghayra alislami deenan falan yuqbala minhu wahuwa fee alakhirati mina alkhasireena

If intercession is all to Allah, and it is after his permission, and all the intercessors, including prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, would not intercede before His permission, and He does not give permission except to the monotheists, hence it became clear that all intercession belongs to Allah, and I seek it from Him by saying: ‘O my God, do not deprive me from his intercession; o my God, let him intercede for me’ or something like that.” Abdullah said.

“We have agreed upon not asking anybody for what he does not own, however prophet Muhammad peace be upon him was given the intercession by Allah almighty, therefore he has it, and I have permission to ask from him what he has, and this would not be Polytheism.” Abdel-Naby said.

“This would be true, if Allah did not prevent you from that. Allah almighty said: {so do not invoke with Allah anyone} [Al-Jinn 72:18]

Transliteration: fala tadAAoo maAAa Allahi ahadan

Asking for intercession is invoke. It is Allah Who gave intercession to the prophet peace be upon him, and it is He Who prevented you from asking it from other than Him. Moreover, intercession is given to other than the prophet peace be upon him; it is proved that angels, children and pious persons have intercession. Hence, could you say that Allah gave them intercession and I would ask them for it? If you said yes, you would be like those who worshipped the righteous persons and were mentioned in the Holy Quran; and if you said no, then you’re saying ‘Allah gave him the intercession and I ask from him what Allah has given him’ would be ruined.” Abdullah said.

“However, I make no partners to Allah, and asking the pious persons is not polytheism.” Abdel-Naby said.

“Do you confess that Allah made the sin of polytheism graver than the sin of adultery, and that He does not forgive it?” Abdullah asked.

“Yes, I confess that. It is clear in Allah’s words.” Abdel-Naby replied.

“You have just discharged yourself from the polytheism that Allah forbade. So, I ask you, by Allah’s name, to explain to me the polytheism that you did not do_ the polytheism that you discharged yourself from?” Abdullah said.

“Polytheism is worshipping the statues, seeking, invoking and fearing them.” Abdel-Naby replied.

“What is the meaning of worshipping the statues? Do you think that Quraish polytheists thought that these stones and woods could create, provide, or dispose the affairs? They did not think so, as I mentioned earlier.” Abdullah said.

“No, what I mean is that whoever goes to a stone, wood or building on a grave (or anything like that) and invokes it and sacrifices for it believing that it provides nearness to Allah and brings good, then this is the worshipping of statues that I mean.” Abdel-Naby said.

“You said true, this is what you do at the stones, buildings and irons that are above the graves and the like. As for your saying ‘Polytheism is worshipping the statues’ do you mean that polytheism is confined to this alone and that invoking the pious people and putting trust in them are not polytheism?” Abdullah said.

“Yes, this is what I meant.” Abdel-Naby replied.

“So, what about the numerous verses in which Allah have forbidden putting trust in the righteous persons, angels and the others, and have counted those who do such things as disbelievers? (I mentioned that before)” Abdullah said.

“However, those who invoked the angels and prophets were not counted as disbelievers for this reason; instead they were counted as disbelievers when they said that the angels are Allah’s daughters, and that Jesus is the son of Allah. We had never said that Abdel-Qader is the son of Allah, or that Zaynab is the daughter of Allah.” Abdel-Naby said.

“Attributing a son to Allah is another kind of disbelieve, Allah almighty said: {Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One, (1) Allah, the Eternal Refuge.} [Al-Ikhlaas 112:1-2]

Then He said: {Allah has not taken any son, nor has there ever been with Him any deity. [If there had been], then each deity would have taken what it created, and some of them would have sought to overcome others.} [Al-Muminun 23:91]

Transliteration: Ma ittakhatha Allahu min waladin wama kana maAAahu min ilahin ithan lathahaba kullu ilahin bima khalaqa walaAAala baAAduhum AAala baAAdin

Allah has distinguished between the two kinds of disbelieve. Evidence to that also is; that those who disbelieved by invoking Allat, although of his righteousness, did not make him son to Allah. Moreover, those who disbelieved by worshipping the jinn, did not make them sons to Allah. Also, the four Islamic schools of fiqh mentioned in their books that if the Muslim claimed that there is a son to Allah, then he is an apostate, and if he made a partner to Him, then he is an apostate_ they distinguish between the two kinds.” Abdullah said.

“However Allah says: {Unquestionably, [for] the allies of Allah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve} [Yunus 10:62]” Abdel-Naby said.

Transliteration: Ala inna awliyaa Allahi la khawfun AAalayhim wala hum yahzanoona

“We believe in this, but they are not to be worshipped. We deny only worshipping them beside worshipping Allah and making them partners to Him. On the other hand, you are obliged to love and follow them and confess their super deeds; none could deny their super deeds except those who are strayed from the righteous path. Allah’s religion is a just religion between two extremists.” Abdullah said.

“Those in whom the Holy Quran was revealed, did not testify that there is no true God but Allah, rejected the messenger of Allah peace be upon him, denied resurrection and denied the Holy Quran and considered it magic. However, we testify that there is no true God but Allah, and that Muhammad is His messenger, believe in the Holy Quran, believe in resurrection, pray and fast, so how could you make us equal to those?” Abdel-Naby said.

“There is a consensus between jurists that if a person believed the messenger of Allah in something and did not believe him in another, then he is a disbeliever, not a Muslim. The same is applied if s/he believed in parts of the Holy Quran and disbelieved in other parts (e.g. if s/he believed in monotheism but denied the prayer, believed in monotheism and the prayer but denied the obligatory of Zakat, believed in all these things but denied the fasting, or believed in all these things but denied the obligatory of pilgrimage, or disbelieved in resurrection). When some people at the period of the prophet, peace be upon him, did not go for the pilgrimage, Allah almighty said about them in the holy Quran: {And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves - then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.} [Al-Imran 3:97]

Transliteration: walillahi AAala alnnasi hijju albayti mani istataAAa ilayhi sabeelan waman kafara fainna Allaha ghaniyyun AAani alAAalameena

Therefore, Allah declared in His book that who believes in some and disbelieves in some is indeed a disbeliever. Moreover, He ordered that Islam must be taken as whole. Do you confess that whoever believes in some and disbelieves in another is indeed a disbeliever?” Abdullah said.

“Yes, I confess this. It is clear in the Holy Quran.” Abdel-Naby replied.

Abdullah said: “If you confess that there is a consensus among jurists that whoever believed the messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, in something and denied the obligatory of prayer s/he is a disbeliever his/her blood and properties are not protected (the same is applicable to whoever confesses everything except resurrection), moreover it is known that monotheism is the greatest obligatory the prophet peace be upon him came with, and it is greater than even prayer, fasting and pilgrimage. Hence, when a person disbelieves in one of these things s/he would be considered as a disbeliever even if s/he performed all the prophet’s commands, but if s/he denied monotheism, which is the religion of all prophets, s/he would not be a disbeliever! O my God, how strange is this ignorance!

“Consider the companions of the prophet peace be upon him when they fought Bani-Hanifa, although they became Muslims during the period of the prophet peace be upon him and was testifying that there is no true God but Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger, and performing prayer and raising the Azan.”

“However, they testified that Musailama is a prophet while we say that there is no prophet after Muhammad peace be upon him.” Abdel-Naby said.

“However, you raise Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, or Abdel-Qader to the exalted position of the creator of the skies and earths. If the one who raise a man to the rank of the prophet peace be upon him would be a disbeliever and his blood and properties will no longer be protected and his prayers and testimony will not be beneficial to him; then, what is about the one who raise him to the rank of Allah! All those that Ali bin Abi-Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, burned claimed to be Muslims and were among his company and received knowledge from the companions of the prophet, peace be upon him, but they believed in Ali what you believe in Abdel-Qader and others. Why did the companions of the prophet, peace be upon him, agree upon killing them and did agree upon their being disbelievers? Do you think that the companions of the prophet, peace be upon him, would falsely attribute Muslims with disbelieve? Do you think that believing in people such as Abdel-Qader does not harm, while believing in Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, is disbelieve? If it is said that the ancestors were considered as disbelievers because they joined polytheism along with rejecting the prophet peace be upon him, rejecting the Quran, and denying the resurrection… etc, then what is the purpose of the chapter that all jurists (in the four schools of Fiqh) titled in their books by ‘the apostate sentence.’ They mentioned numerous things in this chapter, each kind of it leads to disbelieve and makes the apostate’s blood and properties permissible. They even mentioned trivial things in the eyes of who do it (e.g. uttering a word without meaning it, or saying it as a kind of having fun) and those in whom Allah almighty said: {Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?" (65) Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief.} [At-Tawba: 65-66]

Transliteration: abiAllahi waayatihi warasoolihi kuntum tastahzioona (65) La taAAtathiroo qad kafartum baAAda eemanikum

Those whom Allah declared that they disbelieved after they had believed while their being with the messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, in Tabuk battle, said a word they mentioned later that they did not actually mean it. Allah has also narrated about the people of Israel that they said to Moses (although their monotheism, knowledge and righteousness): {O Moses, make for us a god} [Al-Araf 7:138]

Transliteration: ijAAal lana ilahan

It is also narrated that some of the companions of the prophet, peace be upon him, said to him: ‘made medals to us’ so the prophet, peace be upon him sworn that this is like the saying of the people of Israel: {O Moses, make for us a god just as they have gods.}” [Al-Araf 7:138]

Transliteration: ijAAal lana ilahan kama lahum alihatun

“However, the people of Israel, and those who asked the prophet, peace be upon him, to make medals to them did not become disbelievers because of that.” Abdel-Naby said.

“Both who asked the prophet, peace be upon him, and who asked Moses, did not do it. If they did it, they would have been disbelievers. If the companions took medals after the prophet’s saying, they would have been disbelievers.” Abdullah replied.

“However, there is another perplexing subject; it is the story of Osama bin Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him, when he killed the man who said ‘There is no true God but Allah’ and the prophet’s denial to his action and his saying: “O Osama, did you kill him after his saying there is no true God but Allah?”

And the prophet’s saying: “I have been ordered to fight people till they say there is no true God but Allah.”

How can I reconcile between what you have mentioned and these two Ahadeeths? Guide me, may Allah guide you.” Abdel-Naby said.

Abdullah said: “It is known that the messenger of Allah, peace be upon him fought the Jews and captivated them while they were testifying that there is no true God but Allah. Moreover, the companions of the prophet, peace be upon him, fought the tribe of Bani-Hanifa while they were testifying that there is no true God but Allah, and that Muhammad, peace be upon him, is the messenger of Allah, and they were praying and calling for Islam. The same is applicable to those whom Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, burned.

You confess that who deny resurrection, or any of the Islam pillars, is a disbeliever and his/her blood is permissible, even if s/he said that there is no true God but Allah. How could that be applicable for the sub-topics and not applicable for the monotheism which is the core of the prophets’ religion?!

Probably, you did not understand the meaning of these Ahadeeth:

As for the hadeeth of Osama; he killed the man thinking that he alleged Islam only to save his blood and property. The one who declares to be Muslim must be given safety, unless the contrary has been proved. Allah almighty said about that: {O you who have believed, when you go forth [to fight] in the cause of Allah, investigate} [An-Nisa 4:94]

Transliteration: Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo itha darabtum fee sabeeli Allahi fatabayyanoo

This verse means that it is obligatory to refrain from killing and seek the truth. If something is not acceptable in Islam has been proved later, then s/he would be killed for Allah’s saying: {investigate}, Otherwise, why did He said: {investigate}

“The other Hadeeth and its like have the same meaning (the one who alleges Islam and monotheism must be given safety, unless the contrary is proved), and the evidence is the prophet’s saying: “have you killed him after his saying there is no true God but Allah?” [Bukhari]

and his saying: “I have been ordered to fight people till they say there is no true God but Allah” [Bukhari]

Also, it is he who said about the Khawarij: “Wherever you meet them kill them” [Bukhari]

Although they worshipped Allah more than the companions themselves, and they took the religious knowledge from the companions of the prophet, may Allah be pleased with them. However their saying ‘No true God but Allah’ did not benefit them, nor did their worshipping or alleging Islam when their contravention to the religion had appeared.”

“What would you say about what is narrated in the Hadeeth: “In the Day of Judgment, people will ask help from Adam, then Noah, then Abraham, then Moses, then Jesus, but all will excuse themselves. Then people will seek it from the messenger of Allah peace be upon him’ this means that asking other than Allah is not polytheism?” Abdel-Naby said.

“You mix different subjects. We do not deny the permissibility of asking from a living person what he owns, Allah almighty said: {And the one from his faction called for help to him against the one from his enemy} [Al-Qasas 28:15]

Transliteration: faistaghathahu allathee min sheeAAatihi AAala allathee min AAaduwwihi

This is like seeking help from a friend in a fight. We denied your seeking help from the graves of the righteous people, or asking them for what none can do but Allah almighty. In the Day of Judgment people will ask the prophets to pray Allah to judge people (so that people of paradise could get rid of the difficulty of the situation). This is permissible in this life and in the Day of Judgment. To go to some righteous man you live with and say to him ‘Pray to me’ as the companions used to ask from the prophet peace be upon him in his life is permissible. However this is not permissible after death. The companions of the prophet, may Allah be pleased with them, never asked the prophet at his grave, moreover the righteous ancestors disapproved the doing of those who prayed Allah at the grave of his prophet.” Abdullah said.

“What would you say about Abraham’s story? When he was thrown in fire and Gabriel came to him and asked him; ‘Do you need anything?’ Abraham, peace be upon him, said: ‘I need nothing from you.’ Then, if asking Gabriel is polytheism, he would not offer it to Abraham” Abdel-Naby wondered.

Abdullah said: “This is a misconception like the previous mentioned one. This Hadeeth is not authentic; however, if we considered it authentic, we would say that Gabriel offered to benefit him by what he can do. Allah almighty said about him: {intense in strength} [An-Najm 53:5]

Transliteration: shadeedu alquwa

Then, if Allah premised him to take Abraham’s fire and the earth and mountains which are around it and throw them all in the east or west, he would do it simply. This is like a very rich man sees a poor one and offers to give him some money, but the needy man refuses to take it and prefers to be patient till Allah provides him with provision is not combined by reminders of generosity. How would this be equal to seeking other than Allah and making partners to Him!

“O Dear brother, know that the ancestors to whom the prophet peace be upon him was sent to them were less in their polytheism than the polytheists of today; this is for three reasons:

1st: The ancestors used to take partners to Allah only during prosperity; and they used to make their faith pure to Him alone during adversities. Allah almighty says: {And when they board a ship, they supplicate Allah, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to the land, at once they associate others with Him} [Al-Ankabut 29:65]

Transliteration: Faitha rakiboo fee alfulki daAAawoo Allaha mukhliseena lahu alddeena falamma najjahum ila albarri itha hum yushrikoona

He also says: {And when waves come over them like canopies, they supplicate Allah, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to the land, there are [some] of them who are moderate [in faith]. And none rejects Our signs except everyone treacherous and ungrateful.} [Luqman 31:32]

Transliteration: Waitha ghashiyahum mawjun kaalththulali daAAawoo Allaha mukhliseena lahu alddeena falamma najjahum ila albarri faminhum muqtasidun wama yajhadu biayatina illa kullu khattarin kafoorin

Then, the polytheists, whom the prophet peace be upon him fought, used to invoke Him beside others during prosperity, and invoke Him alone, and forget their masters, during adversities. On the other hand, the polytheists of today invoke other than Allah during prosperity and adversities. Where we could find who understand this issue very well! It is Allah (Alone) Whose help can be sought.

2nd: The ancestors used to invoke Allah along with righteous persons (prophets, pious people or Angels) or at least stones or woods obey Allah almighty and never disobey Him. On the other hand, the polytheists of today invoke along with Allah the most evil people. Actually, who believes in the righteous persons and what does not disobey (e.g. stones. trees… etc,) is not as bad as who believes in those who disobey Allah and their disobedience is clear and known.

3rd: Polytheism of most of the polytheists of the prophet’s period was in Tawheed al-Ulohiyyah not Tawheed ar-Rubobiyyah. This is not like the polytheism of the polytheists of today whom their polytheism is in Tawheed ar-Rubobiyyah too; they think that nature (for example) is the causer of life, death…etc.

“I will conclude my speech by mentioning an important subject should be understood from what is mentioned earlier; there is a consensus that monotheism must be in word and deed, otherwise the person would not be Muslim. If someone knew the monotheism but did not practice it, s/he is a stubborn disbeliever such as Pharaoh and Iblîs (Satan). Many people fall in this kind of disbelief saying; ‘we know that this is the truth, but we cannot do it. This is not permissible in our homes. We have to blandish our people to be safe of their harm.’ The ignorant fellows do not know that the majority of the disbelievers’ leaders knew the truth but neglected it for such reasons. Allah almighty says: {They have exchanged the signs of Allah for a small price and averted [people] from His way. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.} [At-Tawbah 9:9]

Transliteration: Ishtaraw biayati Allahi thamanan qaleelan fasaddoo AAan sabeelihi innahum saa ma kanoo yaAAmaloona

If someone applied monotheism to his/her actions outwardly without understanding it and believing in it heartily, then s/he is a hypocrite, and s/he is worse than the mere disbeliever, Allah almighty says: {Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire} [An-Nisa 4:145]

Transliteration: Inna almunafiqeena fee alddarki alasfali mina alnnari

“You may understand this very well if you considered what people say. You will see who knows the truth but rejects to do it for his/her being afraid of losing some of the worldly benefits such as Qârûn (Korah), or stature such as Haman, or reign such as Pharaoh. Moreover, you will see who practices monotheism outwardly not heartily, such as the hypocrites, and if you asked him/her about hat s/he believes in, you will discover that s/he does not know!

“However, you have to consider two verses in Allah’s book:

{The first verse is the one that is mentioned earlier: “Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief.} [At-Tawba 9:66]

Transliteration: La taAAtathiroo qad kafartum baAAda eemanikum

If you knew that some of those who conquered the Romans with the prophet, peace be upon him, disbelieved because of a word they uttered for fun, you would know that whoever utters words of disbelief or does it for being afraid of losing property or stature, or does it as blandish is in position worse than the position of the one who utters the word of disbelief for having fun, because the person who utters it for fun does not believe in what he utters to make others laugh; however, whoever utters the word of disbelief or does it with fear and hope for what a creature has, then he had obeyed the order of Satan, feared his threat, did not believe in Allah’s promise, did not fear the threat of the Compeller. Allah almighty says: {Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality,} [Al-Baqarah 2:268]

Transliteration: Alshshaytanu yaAAidukumu alfaqra wayamurukum bialfahshai

He also says: {That is only Satan who frightens [you] of his supporters.} [Al-Imran 3:175]

Transliteration: Innama thalikumu alshshaytanu yukhawwifu awliyaahu

And says: {while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty.} [Al-Baqarah 2:268]

Transliteration: waAllahu yaAAidukum maghfiratan minhu wafadlan

And says: {So fear them not, but fear Me,} [Al-Imran 3:175]

Transliteration: fala takhafoohum wakhafooni

Then is s/he actually a servant to Allah or to Satan?

“The second verse is the saying of Allah almighty: {whoever disbelieves in Allah after his belief... except for one who is forced [to renounce his religion] while his heart is secure in faith. But those who [willingly] open their breasts to disbelief, upon them is wrath from Allah, and for them is a great punishment ;} [An-Nahl 16:106]

Transliteration: Man kafara biAllahi min baAAdi eemanihi illa man okriha waqalbuhu mutmainnun bialeemani walakin man sharaha bialkufri sadran faAAalayhim ghadabun mina Allahi walahum AAathabun AAatheemun

Allah excused only the person who is forced while his/her heart is at rest with faith, the others had disbelieved after their belief, whether it was out of fear, hope or blandish; or as a kind of preferring the home, family, tribe or property; or having fun or any other reason. This verse explains that the human being might be forced to do or say anything, but not to believe in something. And when Allah almighty said: {That is because they preferred the worldly life over the Hereafter and that Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.} [An-Nahl 16:107]

Transliteration: Thalika biannahumu istahabboo alhayata alddunya AAala alakhirati waanna Allaha la yahdee alqawma alkafireena

He showed that torment is not because of the belief, ignorance and hating the religion or liking the disbelief; rather it is because s/he had benefit of it, so s/he loved and preferred the life of this world over that of the Hereafter. And Allah knows best.

“After all of this, has not the time come for you to repent to your God and refrain what you do, because the issue is very serious, as you knew.”

Abdel-Naby said: “I seek forgiveness from God and repent to Him. I testify that there is no true God but Allah, and that Muhammad is His messenger. I disbelieved in everything I used to worship other than Allah. I invoke Allah almighty to forgive what I did in the past and bestow upon me His kindness, forgiveness and mercy. May Allah make me adhere to monotheism and the true creed till I meet Him. O brother Abdullah, I invoke Allah to reward you well for your advice “indeed religion is advice” [Narrated by Muslim]

And for warning me from what the Islam has forbidden (my name), and I want to tell you that I have changed it to be ‘Abdurrahman’. I invoke Allah to reward you for forbidding me from the Munkar, which was to ruin me if I met Allah with it.

“However, I want to ask you for a last request. Please, mention to me some issues people used to be mistaken with.”

Abdullah said: “you are welcome, so listen to me attentively:

Never follow that which is not entirely clear of the book of Allah and the Sunnah of his prophet thereof, seeking Al-Fitnah (polytheism and trials), and seeking for its hidden meanings, while none knows its hidden meanings except Allâh. Instead, Make your slogan is the slogan of those who are firmly grounded in knowledge who say: ‘We believe in it’.”
