A brief about “The Virtue of Fasting Six Days in the Month of Shawwâl”

The Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, «He who observed the fast of Ramadan and then followed it with six fasting days of Shawwal, it would be as if he fasted perpetually» [Reported in Sahih Muslim]

«من صام رمضان ثم أتبعه ستاً من شوال كان كصيام الدهر» صحيح مسلم

The reward is great for those who fast these six days. The happy blessed and successful one is whoever is guided by Allah to seize this significant opportunity and fast these few days before it is too late.

Important issues related to the fasting of six days of Shawwâl:

First: Fasting six days of Shawwâl after the day of Eid is a Sunnah. It is not a must that if someone fasted them once or more to continue to fast them perpetually. There is no sin in leaving them.

Second: it is not a must to fast the six days of Shawwâl consecutively. A Muslim can fast them sequentially or scattered during the month; as the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, initiated fasting them and he did not mention them to be in sequence or scattered.

Third: It is not valid to combine making up for the missed days of Ramadan with fasting six days of Shawwâl with one intention. The woman should start with fasting the missed days of Ramadan and after that she fasts the six days of Shawwâl; that if she wanted to attain the reward mentioned in the Hadith.

Fourth: the reward is obtained by the one who fasts three days of the six with the white days (the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth of every Hijri month) with one intention. Some scholars said that it is hoped to obtain the two rewards.

May Allah help us to mention Him, thank Him and be good worshippers of Him.
