All praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the ‘Alamîn (mankind, jinn, and all that exits) and peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, all his household and companions.
In our time now, many people -may Allah guide us and them- find enjoyment in listening to songs and they enjoy them despite the fact that singing is forbidden in the Holy Quran and Sunnah and though singing contains erotic and abhorrent words that any wise Muslim should not listen to, enjoy it or boast by listening to it. It also leads to be afflicted with other illness such as drug or alcohol addicting. If one manages to give up listening, he will be able to get rid of such illness. Those who listen to singing or who fall in love are always drunk and that lead to ruin them in this life. In the Holy Makkah and before the immigration to Al Madinah, Allah made singing forbidden even before Allah prescribed many obligations and made other things impermissible such as drinking wine and other bad things that hurt our ethics and behavior so that hearts should be pure and clean.
Damages of Singing
Singing leads to many damages and evils; Singing spoils minds, kills shyness and dignity. It also leads to take out jealousy and the light of faith from hearts. Anyone who listens to singing, it makes him close to Satan and away from Allah. Also the singing which spoils the nation and ignites the fires of desires in the people leads to adultery and sodomy. Singing makes the people heedless of the Quran, of remerging Allah and of doing good deeds. It creates hypocrisy in hearts and pushes the heedless boys and girls to the wrong way. It makes them think about adultery and fornication. Every boy and girl who listens to it is soaked in illusion, false dreams and bad thoughts.
Ibn Al Qaeem, may Allah bestow His Mercy upon him, said: "Singing is the spy of the heart, stealer of dignity and eater of minds. It creeps into hearts and arouses one's imagination and excites desires, yearning, foolishness, rankness and frivolity. If a wise and honorable man whose face reflects faith, the beauty of Islam and sweetness of the Quran, listens to singing, his mind will be affected, his shyness will decrease, his dignity shall forsake him, his brightness will vanish, he shall be no more respected by people, his devil will be happy with him, his faith shall complain to Allah and he shall find difficulty to recite the Holy Quran.
Evidences of forbidding singing
Singing is forbidden in the Holy Quran and Sunnah, in the Quran:
“And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment.” [Loqman : 6]
Transliteration: Wa Mina An-Nāsi Man Yashtarī Lahwa Al-Ĥadīthi Liyuđilla An Sabīli Allāhi Bighayri Ilmin Wa Yattakhidhahā Huzūan 'Ūla'ika Lahum Adhābun Muhīnun
Ibn Massoud said in interpreting this verse: I swear by Allah, one has the right to be worshipped but He, this verse means singing. He swore on that three times.
In the Sunnah,
And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: There will be from may nation a people who will deem fornication, silk (for men), alcohol and music to be permissible, and there will be a people who will camp beside a high mountain, when a poor man passes by them and asks for a need, they will say to him, "Return to us tomorrow", in the morning Allah will make the mountain fall upon them and the others (who are served) are transformed into apes and pigs, until the Day of Judgment". [Reported Al Bukhari]
If music and singing were lawful, so why did the Prophet, peace be upon him blamed them for that? He would not also made their punishment to be the same for those who deem permissible wine and fornication. If they were permissible, he would not have threatened them severely like that.
Anyone who listens to singing might be punished by this terrible punishment in this life and on the Other Day.
Ibn Al Qaeem, said: "Those among them who are not transformed into apes and pigs shall be transformed when they are buried in graves".
Muslim scholars’ opinions about singing
The four great Imams and the nations scholars agreed that singing is not permissible and that only the dissolute and the fools listen to it.
1- Al Hanafia Opinion:
Al Hanafia see in their books that listening to singing is dissolution and enjoying it is a matter of disbelief. They argued that singing is forbidden in all religion, so Allah never makes permissible what calls for fornication and dissolution.
2- All Malikia Opinion:
Imam Malik was asked about singing, he replied: Only the rake listen to it. Another man asked Imam Malik about singing, the Imam replied: On the Day of Resurrection, if you see the right and the false, in what category will singing be classified? The asker replied: Singing will be classified under falsehood. Then Imam Malik Asked: Is falsehood in paradise or in hell? The asker replied: in hell, then Malik said: now you may leave, you have given an answer to yourself
3- Al Shafie Opinion:
Imam Shafei Said: Anyone who Listens to singing too much Then he will be considered fool, and his witness shall be rejected.
4- Al Hanbali Opinion:
Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal says: "I do not like singing, it plants the seeds of hypocrisy in hearts, it is falsehood and falsehoods is in hell"
Oh you who listen to singing, are not these evidences enough? How do you insist blindly to listen to it while you know it is forbidden? Allah provided you with the ability to hear so that you could use it to listen to what benefits you and what pleases your Lord. So why do you listen to what harm you and make your Lord angry such as rake words and dissolute poems? Is this the way you follow to thank Allah for the blessings He bestowed upon you? Why do you insist to wage war against Allah and fight Him with sins? Why you are heedless about Allah's Commands? Why do not you glorify your Lord? Do not you fear that Allah may punish you? Do you have ability to bear hell fire? Do you remember death and its agonies, the dusk in graves, the thing Path and the severe reckoning? Are not you Muslims? Muslims were not created to enjoy trivial matters such as playing and listening to singing! Muslims were created to worship Allah and to spread His Religion, and to fight in the Cause of Allah. So do not care only about listening to singing and playing, Muslims should not do that at all.
A Message to those who make songs recordings:
My brother who make songs records, Allah, the All Mighty says: “And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.” [Al-Maaida 5:2]
Transliteration: Wa Taāwanū Alá Al-Birri Wa At-Taqwá Wa Lā Taāwanū Alá Al-'Ithmi Wa Al-Udwāni
By doing so, you go against this verse, so why you do so my brother? Did you finish all permissible matters so that you turn to forbidden matters? Did not you ask yourself one time, why other do permissible things and you do forbidden matters? Why do others do what benefits the people, while you do what harms them? Are they better than you? Do not you like to be a good member who benefits his society? Why do you accept to play the role of the devil assistant and helper for those who do mischief on earth through spreading these rake songs among Muslims? These songs are one of the causes that spread fornication and mischief in societies. Allah severely threatens who does that. Allah the All Mighty says: “Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread [or publicized] among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you do not know.” [An-Noor 24:19]
Transliteration: 'Inna Al-Ladhīna Yuĥibbūna 'An Tashīa Al-Fāĥishatu Fī Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Lahum Adhābun 'Alīmun Fī Ad-Dunyā Wa Al-'Ākhirati Wa Allāhu Yalamu Wa 'Antum Lā Talamūna
I swear by Allah, it is really a severe threatening, so do not subject yourself to it because you want to gain money which you shall spend so quickly but will be punished for long.
When Allah makes something forbidden, He makes its price unlawful. So, all the money gained through selling these forbidden things are unlawful and Haram.
Anyone who listens to songs will be reckoned only about himself. But for anyone who records these songs, shall bear the sins of anyone who buys and listens to them. So consider how many persons you shall bear their sins, would you bear all that? In this way, you lead yourself to hell while you do not feel. Why you do that? Why do you lower yourself in this way to that extent and lead it to destruction? Did you forget Allah's Punishment? Did you forget death and its agonies, the dusk in the grave, the slipping on the Path, did you forget fire and torture? My brother, do not let money make you forget all that, do not let it make you forget your Lord, your Lord never forgets. Do not let money make you forget your end. I swear by Allah that you are too weak to bear any Torture of Allah. So do not insist on disobeying Allah.
Most of the people who listen to songs, would not sell them, do you know why? Because they know that it is a dirty job that Muslims are not liable to do. They also do not like to spread mischief among Muslims and they know that the money they earn from that is unlawful. They do not like to eat or drink from ill-gotten money. So, my brother, may Allah guide you and make you like them, hurry up to repent and get rid of this dirty work. Be completely sure that Allah will never forsake you and shall provide you with a better source of sustenance if you repent honestly. Allah, the All Mighty, says: “…And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (2) And will provide for him from where he does not expect…” [At-Talaaq 65:2-3]
Transliteration: …Wa Man Yattaqi Allāha Yajal Lahu Makhrajāan (2) Wa Yarzuqhu Min Ĥaythu Lā Yaĥtasibu…
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever gives up something for the Sake of Allah, Allah will provide him with another thing better than what he gave up" [Al-Albani]
May Allah guide me and you and make us listen to the Word [good advice Lâ ilâha illallâh ? (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah) and Islamic Monotheism] and follow the best thereof (i.e. worship Allah Alone, repent to Him and avoid Tâghût).
Peace be upon you.
Note: “Singing” as meant in this article do not include Meaningful Inshad (chanting), that is NOT accompanied by any musical instruments.
