Golden Advices for the Pilgrims

My pilgrim brother: these are some pieces of advice that I like to present to you asking Allah success for you and me. Sincerity... Sincerity... Beware of hypocrisy

Golden Advices for the Pilgrims to the Sacred House of Allah

All praise be to Allah who is unified by the characteristics of completeness and peace and blessings of Allah be upon Muhammad, the man of virtues and upon his family and companions. My pilgrim brother: these are some pieces of advice that I like to present to you asking Allah success for you and me.

Sincerity... Sincerity... Beware of hypocrisy

My pilgrim brother: you are to perform a great deed and a blessed rite. If Allah grants you success, then you have achieved great good.

But brother: have you revived your intention while going to this Blessed House?

Reviving intention is inevitable. The slave of Allah is rewarded according to his intention. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said: “The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration was for what he emigrated for.” [Reported by al-Bukhari].

«إنما الأعمال بالنيات، وإنما لكل امرىء ما نوى، فمن كانت هجرته إلى دنيا يصيبها، أو إلى امرأة ينكحها، فهجرته إلى ما هاجر إليه» رواه البخاري

So, be careful my pilgrim brother for the sincere intention. As long as you have suffered fatigue and difficulties, be sure not to waste them in vain. {And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allah, and worship none but Him Alone (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him),} [Surat Al-Bayyinah 98:5],

Transliteration: Wama omiroo illa liyaAAbudoo Allaha mukhliseena lahu alddeena hunafa

{Verily We have sent down the Book to you (O Muhammad) in truth: So worship Allah (Alone) by doing religious deeds sincerely for Allâh’s sake only.} [Surat Az-Zumar 39:2].

Transliteration: Inna anzalna ilayka alkitaba bialhaqqi faoAAbudi Allaha mukhlisan lahu alddeena

Ibn al-’Arabi said: “This verse is an evidence of the obligation of intention for each deed…”

My pilgrim brother: striving the self for sincerity and for refusing hypocrisy is a difficult matter; it is, however, easy for this who Allah facilitates it for him/her. This, who conquers it, will be pleased with performing acts of obedience and will find blessing in acts of worship.

Sahl Ibn Abdullah was asked: what is the severest thing against the self? He said: “Sincerity; as it has no part in it”. Sufyan Ath-Thawry said: “I have not handled a more difficult thing for me than my intention. It is changeable for me”.

My pilgrim brother: you are going to the purist House on earth, located in the best place, a guest to the King of kings, the Supreme Power of the heavens and earth, the Almighty, Glorified and Exalted be He. So, brother, do not confer with your heart about any other than Him. Be sincere in your orientation to Him Almighty. Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that he had heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say: “Allah the Almighty has said: I am the One, One Who does not stand in need of a partner. If anyone does anything in which he associates anyone else with Me, I shall abandon him with the one whom he associates Me with.” [Reported by Muslim].

«قال الله تبارك وتعالى: أنا أغنى الشركاء عن الشرك. من عمل عملا أشرك فيه معي غيري، تركته وشركه» رواه مسلم

My pilgrim brother: Do not be one of those who go for pilgrimage out of hypocrisy and reputation that it would be said that he had performed pilgrimage and would take the title of a “pilgrim” by people. The share of such a person from the pilgrimage is but fatigue and difficulties. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said: “He who lets people hear of his good deeds intentionally, Allah will let people know his real intention, and he who does good things in public to show off, Allah will disclose his real intention” [Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

«من سمع سمع الله به، ومن يرائي يرائي الله به» رواه البخاري ومسلم

Beware, brother, of hypocrisy against which the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has frequently warned us: “My greatest fear for you is the minor polytheism”; they said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the minor polytheism? He replied “Hypocrisy” [Reported by Ahmad, Al-Albani said: its chain of transmission is good].

«إن أخوف ما أخاف عليكم: الشرك الأصغر، قالوا: يا رسول الله وما الشرك الأصغر؟ ‍ قال: الرياء» رواه أحمد، قال الألباني: إسناده جيد

Oh sincerity... Sincerity, O my pilgrim brother; hypocrisy renders good deeds fruitless.

Here is, brother, a precious recommendation from Al-Farouk (nick name of ‘umar which means the one who distinguish the truth from falsehood) ‘Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: “This who has pure intention concerning the truth even against himself, Allah will suffice for whatever is between people and himself, and this who adorns himself with things by which he is not characterized, Allah is to disgrace him”.

These are the days of invocations, so seize the opportunity

My pilgrim brother:

Are you not to be pleased to: Get your needs fulfilled?!

Are you not to be pleased to: Be cured or that your patient be cured?!

Are you not to be pleased to: Be steadfast by Allah Almighty on His right religion?!

Are you not to be pleased to: Be guided by Allah to whatever is disputed about?

Are you not to be pleased to: Be forgiven by Allah for all your previous and coming sins?!

Are you not to be pleased to: Be provided by Allah with the good end in this worldly life?!

Are you not to be pleased to: Meet Allah while He is pleased with you?!

Are you not to be pleased to: Get your face away from Hellfire?!

Are you not to be pleased to: Be admitted to Paradise and be blessed with Al-Abrâr (the believers of Islamic Monotheism, the pious and the righteous)?!

Yes. You are to be pleased if Allah Almighty fulfills these wishes for you; how great these wishes are.

Brother: while you are rolling around such pure Mashâ’ir (places), beware of being unable to invoking Allah. Do not ever miss such gains. What is the use of your pilgrimage, then, if you do not approach your Creator Almighty with your heart in such places? How expensive the merchandise is and how cheap those who lose it are.

My pilgrim brother: Scholars have divided prayers (invocations) into two divisions: prayers of worshipping and prayers of asking. Think about the words of the scholar Abdul-Rahman as-Sa’adi, may Allah rest his soul, who said: “All what is mentioned in the Quran that includes the orders for praying, the prohibition to invoke other than Allah and praising to those who pray address the prayers of asking and prayers of worshipping. This is a useful basis. As for the words of praying, it comes to the mind of most people that they are only the prayers of asking. They do not think that all acts of worship come under praying. This is a mistake that leads to a worse matter. The verses are clear in including both the prayers of asking and of worshiping”.

The example scholar Abdul-Aziz Ibn Abdullah Ibn Baz - may Allah rest his soul, bestow him with His favors and admits him to Paradise- said: “The two types of prayers are correlated. Allah is prayed for to bring benefit and ward off harm; as the prayers of asking and He is prayed for out of fear and hope; as the prayers of worshipping. The two types are, thus, correlated. Each worshipping prayer necessitates an asking prayer and each asking prayer implies a worshipping prayer”.

My pilgrim brother: be careful to pray and do not forget that this is worship. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said: “(Du’a) Prayer is worship” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah; Sahih Al-Jami’ As-Saghir: 3407].

«الدعاء هو العبادة» رواه الترمذي وأبو داود وابن ماجه وصححه الألباني في صحيح الجامع

My Muslim brother: do not be amongst those who are unable to pray. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said: “The most unable person is this who is unable to pray and the most miser is that who is miser in saluting others.” [Reported by Ibn Habban, Sahîh Aj-Jami’ As-Saghîr: 1044].

«أعجز الناس من عجز عن الدعاء، و أبخل الناس من بخل بالسلام» رواه ابن حبان،  صححه الألباني في السلسلة الصحيحة

My pilgrim brother: The greatest day amongst these blessed ones is the day of Arafat; the day which is waited for by the righteous. They have prepared and remembered their needs to be asked for. They ask Allah the Almighty for the good of both this worldly life and the Hereafter. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said “The best (du’a) prayer is the prayer during the day of Arafat” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi ; Declared Hassan by Al-Albani in “Sahih At-Tirmidhi”].

«خير الدعاء دعاء يوم عرفة» رواه الترمذي، حسنه الألباني في صحيح الترمذي

My pilgrim brother: Where is your position in such a day? Are you amongst those who are asking for forgiveness and approaching to Allah by supplication and prayer? Or are you amongst the heedless whose hearts are negligent to the greatness of such a day? Imam An-Nawawi said about the day of Arafat: “One must repeat asking for forgiveness and uttering the words of repentance from all acts of disobedience; accompanying this with the repentance of the heart. One is to increase crying and praying and supplicating. There, tears are shed, falls and errors are reformed and needs are hoped for to be fulfilled. It is a great assembly and momentous situation in which the best righteous, faithful virtuous and those who are nearer to Allah gather. This is the greatest assembly in the world. It is said that if the day of Arafat coincides with Friday, all the people assembled are to be forgiven”.

My pilgrim brother: Do not ever pray as those who are heedless and negligent. Pray as those who are faithful and humble. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said: “Know that Allah does not accept the prayer of a heedless heart.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi; delared Hassan by Al-Albani]

«واعلموا أن الله لا يستجيب دعاء من قلب غافل لاه» رواه الترمذي وحسنه الألباني

My pilgrim brother: while you are standing in such pure places, I must remind you of some of the disciplines of praying, may Allah Almighty mercy your weakness while you are standing between His Hands. You have my pilgrim brother to:

First: approach to Allah in humility, supplicating, hoping and fearing {Verily, they used to hasten on to do good deeds, and they used to call on Us with hope and fear, and used to humble themselves before Us.} [Surat Al-Anbiyâ’ 21:90].

Transliteration: innahum kanoo yusariAAoona fee alkhayrati wayadAAoonana raghaban warahaban wakanoo lana khashiAAeena

Second: turn your face towards the Qiblah (prayer direction towards Mecca).

Third: do the following before starting to supplicate: glorifying and praising Allah with His characteristics, praying upon the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and then start to invoke.

Fourth: acknowledge your mistakes and admit your sins.

Fifth: invoking Allah three times.

Sixth: raising the hands as a sign of humility and supplication. It is narrated by Salman al-Faresy that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said: “Your Lord High and Blessed be He, is munificent and generous. He is ashamed from His slave if he raises his hand to return him empty handed in frustration.” [Reported by Al-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah; Sahîh Aj-Jâmi’: 2070].

« إن ربكم تبارك وتعالى حيي كريم يستحيي من عبده إذا رفع يديه إليه أن يردهما صفرا» رواه الترمذي وأبو داود وابن ماجه وصححه الألباني في صحيح الجامع

Insisting on Praying

My pilgrim brother: raise your hope in Allah Almighty in such a day. Do not raise hopes in any other than Him. May Allah make you and me amongst those who are answered to and who achieve hopes in such places.

It is the season of acts of obedience.

My pilgrim brother: have you searched in your heart while you are leaving your homeland and brothers, why all such suffering?!

There is no doubt that if each pilgrim, whether or not he/she left their homeland, searches in his/her heart, they will find that joy and pleasure which intermix with their conscience while intending to go to these holy places {“O our Lord! I have made some of my offspring to dwell in an uncultivable valley by Your Sacred House (the Ka'bah at Makkah); in order, O our Lord, that they may perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), so fill some hearts among men with love towards them, and (O Allah) provide them with fruits so that they may give thanks.} [Surat Ibrâhîm 14:37].

Transliteration: Rabbana innee askantu min thurriyyatee biwadin ghayri thee zarAAin AAinda baytika almuharrami rabbanaliyuqeemoo alssalata faijAAal afidatan mina alnnasi tahwee ilayhim waorzuqhum mina alththamarati laAAallahum yashkuroona

How many hearts that have melted with great passion to go and dwell in these pure places!

My Muslim brother: No doubt that these days are the days of performing acts of obedience and that it is the season of performing acts of piety. Everyone is saying and repeating the slogan of monotheism: ((Labbaika Allahumma Labbaik, Labbaika la sharika Laka labbaik, Inna-l-hamda wan-ni’mata Laka walmulk, La sharika Lak) which means: here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am. You have no partner. Here I am. Surely all praise, grace and dominion is yours, and you have no partner.)). In the Hadith narrated by Anas Ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, when he performed the farewell pilgrimage with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, offered four Rakat of Zuhr prayer at medina and we were in his company, and two Rakat of the Asr prayer at Dhul-Hulaifa and then passed the night there till it was dawn; then he rode his mount, and when he reached Al-Baida’, he praised and glorified Allah and said Takbir (i.e. Alhamdu-lillah and Subhanallah and Allahu-Akbar). Then he and the people along with him recited Talbiya with the intention of performing Hajj and Umra.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari]

«صلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، ونحن معه، بالمدينة الظهر أربعا، والعصر بذي الحليفة ركعتين، ثم بات بها حتى أصبح، ثم ركب حتى استوت به على البيداء، حمد الله وسبح وكبر، ثم أهل بحج وعمرة ، وأهل الناس بهما ...» رواه البخاري

My pilgrim brother: that is how the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has initiated his pilgrimage; i.e. by praising and glorifying Allah and by saying Allah is Greater. “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him continued saying the calls of pilgrimage (talbiyyah) until reaching aj-Jamra” [Reported by Al-Bukhari, from the Hadith narrated by al-Fadl Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father].

Brother: Have you felt the meaning of the call of pilgrimage? Have you believed in it while repeating it?

Your saying: ((Here I am)) is responding to the call of your Lord if He orders you to perform pilgrimage to His House: i.e. it is a response after response or it is an obligatory response.

My pilgrim brother: while you are in the best places ever, how could you waste these days in other than performing acts of obedience? However, because of the virtues of these days and for that people are busy performing acts of worship, Satan becomes enraged and is afflicted by humiliation and disgrace. It is narrated by Talha Ibn Obeidul-Allah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said: “Satan is never seen in any day as small, defeated, low, and angry as in the day of Arafat that is because he sees the revealing of mercies and the forgiveness of Allah for the great sins, except what he has been seen on the day of Badr...” [Reported by Malik in al-Muwatta’, Ibn Abd Al-Bar said: Mursal Hassan].

«ما رئي الشيطان يوما هو فيه أصغر، ولا أحقر ، ولا أدحر، ولا أغيظ منه في يوم عرفة، وما ذلك إلا لما رأى من تنزل الرحمة وتجاوز الله عن الذنوب العظام، إلا ما رأى يوم بدر» رواه مالك في الموطأ، وقال ابن عبد البر: مرسل حسن

My pilgrim brother: these are the days of forgiveness; so do not waste them in vain. It is narrated by Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said: “There is no day when Allah sets free more servants from hellfire than the Day of ‘Arafat. He draws near, then praises them to the angels, saying: What do these want?” [Reported by Muslim, An-Nassâ’i and Ibn Majah].

«ما من يوم أكثر من أن يعتق الله فيه عبدا من النار، من يوم عرفة. وإنه ليدنو ثم يباهي بهم الملائكة. فيقول: ما أراد هؤلاء ؟» رواه مسلم والنسائي وابن ماجه

Brother: acts of obedience... acts of obedience... Allah will not mislead a servant who has sought what pleases Him. May Allah help you and me for piety.

And take a provision with you… but the best provision is the fear of Allah

My pilgrim brother: when intending to perform pilgrimage, people are of the habit of preparing expenses and whatever they will need. They are going in a long journey and this is a good thing.

But my pilgrim brother: there is a necessary provision without which your journey of pilgrimage is in vain. Do you know what such provision is? It is “piety”. No good is there in a pilgrimage of a one who mixes it with acts of disobedience. These are the days of performing acts of obedience and they are the market places of piety. This who disobeys Allah is a loser, sooner and later. Allah Almighty has said: {The Hajj (pilgrimage) is (in) the well-known (lunar year) months (i.e. the 10th month, the 11th month and the first ten days of the 12th month of the Islâmic calendar, i.e. two months and ten days). So whosoever intends to perform Hajj therein (by assuming Ihrâm), then he should not have sexual relations (with his wife), nor commit sin, nor dispute unjustly during the Hajj. And whatever good you do, (be sure) Allâh knows it. And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best provision is At-Taqwa (piety, righteousness). So fear Me, O men of understanding!} [Surat Al-Baqarah 2:197].

Transliteration: Alhajju ashhurun maAAloomatun faman farada feehinna alhajja fala rafatha walafusooqa wala jidala fee alhajji wamatafAAaloo min khayrin yaAAlamhu Allahu watazawwadoo fainna khayra alzzadi alttaqwa waittaqooni ya olee alalbabi

My pilgrim brother: make your profitable trade as fearing from Allah Almighty so that you return with accepted pilgrimage. Allah has prohibited you in the previous verse from rafath, fisûq and jidâl. Rafath refers to sexual intercourse, insinuating to it and to obscene language. Imam Ibn Hajar said: “its meaning is more general than this. It is what is meant in his saying in fasting: “If it is the day one of you is fasting, so he is not to perform rafath” [Reported by Muslim].

The origin of “fisq [in Arabic]” my pilgrim brother is leaving, so it is called for this who leaves obedience. It is narrated by Ibn Abbas, Ibn ‘Umar, Attâ’, Al-Hassan and others that (fisqû) means: committing sins while being in the state of consecration in pilgrimage.

Al-Qurtubi said (Jidâl which means disputing): “there is no disputing in its time or in its place”.

My pilgrim brother: be careful to be among those who have been mentioned by the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in his saying: “This who performed pilgrimage and neither spoke indecently nor did he act wickedly, would return as on the (very first day) his mother bore him” [Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim];

«من حج هذا البيت، فلم يرفث، ولم يفسق، رجع كيوم ولدته أمه» رواه البخاري ومسلم

i.e. free from sin. Ibn Hajar said: “It is apparent for the remissions of major and minor sins and their consequences”.

Brother: the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said: “The accepted pilgrimage will receive no other reward than Paradise” [Reported by Muslim].

Al-Hasan al-Basri said: “The accepted pilgrimage is the one that this who performed it returns with the renouncing of the worldly pleasures and aspiring for the Hereafter.” Al-Qurtubi said: “scholars of Jurisprudence have said: the accepted pilgrimage is the one during which Allah Almighty is not disobeyed”. Be brother one of those who won the fruits of their pilgrimage. How happy you will become that day!

Do not hurt your Muslims brother

My pilgrim brother: No doubt that you have arrived to the Sacred House of Allah to gain the reward and achieve the pleasure of Allah Almighty. You will not be satisfied if they say about you: you come to hurt Muslims by deeds and words. How many those are who do not prefer their brothers to themselves!

Brother: the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has taught people the rituals of pilgrimage. He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has never left anything but that he has clarified it. Here he was when people rushed from Arafat, he pulled the bridles of his camel in order that it will not rush saying, waving with his right hand “O people, calmness, calmness” [Reported by Muslim].

«أيها الناس السكينة السكينة» رواه مسلم

This is, brother, because of his mercy for people in order not to hurt the weak.

My pilgrim brother: many people crowd at the Black Stone to kiss it even if they hurt their Muslim brothers. However, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has taught his companions, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, what to do at the Black Stone. It is narrated by Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, that “The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has circumambulated around the House on the back of a camel, whenever he came to the corner he used to point to it” [Reported by Al-Bukhari].

«طاف النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بالبيت على بعير ، كلما أتى على الركن أشار إليه» رواه البخاري

Imam Ibn Hajar said: “It is probable that when touching it he was near and felt secured – i.e. from the hurt of people – and that when pointing to it he was far from it and that he feared it – i.e. the hurt of people.”

My Muslim brother: this is the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, ordering Um Salama, may Allah be pleased with her, to circumambulate behind people. Um Salama, may Allah be pleased with her, said that she came while she was ill. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said to her: “Circumambulate behind people while you are riding” [Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

«طوفي من وراء الناس وأنت راكبة» رواه البخاري ومسلم

Bother: do not hurt people while you are insisting on kissing the Black Stone. The majority of scholars report that: this who cannot touch the Stone should point to it and be satisfied with that. Al-Fakehy reported from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, that it is abominable to crowd. He said: “Do not hurt others and do not be hurt by others.”

My pilgrim brother: The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has ordered you not to bear what you cannot do. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said: “If I ordain you with an order, so perform from it whatever you can as long as you can.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

My pilgrim brother: On the day of throwing the pebbles, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has taught his nation to throw exactly as the size of throwing pebbles. It is said by all the ancestor and successor scholars.

My pilgrim brother: Do not bear what you cannot do by throwing bigger pebbles so that you would hurt your brothers. However eager we are for goodness, we will not be more pious to and fearing to Allah than the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. He has prohibited us from being over-stringent or exaggerating in religion.

O Muslim brothers: be as the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has said: “You see the believers in regard to their being merciful among themselves and showing love among themselves and being kind, resembling one body, so that, if any part of the body is not well then the whole body shares the sleeplessness (insomnia) and fever with it.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari].

«ترى المؤمنين: في تراحمهم، وتوادهم ، وتعاطفهم، كمثل الجسد، إذا اشتكى عضوا، تداعى له سائر جسده بالسهر والحمى» رواه البخاري

Be, brother, merciful, easy and kind with your Muslim brothers. Have you not known that Allah Almighty has praised the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, by saying: {And those who are with him are severe against disbelievers, and merciful among themselves.} [Surat Al-Fath 48:29].

Transliteration: waallatheena maAAahu ashiddao AAalaalkuffari ruhamao baynahum

And finally: may Allah guide us to perform righteous deeds.
