Ramadan and the Quran

In Ramadan, many people embark upon the Book of Allah Almighty in reciting and memorizing, and sometimes in interpretation and pondering. That is only because Ramadan is the season of goodness, when acts of worship vary and people become active after the devils are chained, gates of paradise are opened and gates of fire are closed.

{All the praises and thanks be to Allâh, Who has sent down to His slave (Muhammad) the Book (the Qur’ân), and has not placed therein any crookedness} [Surat Al-Kahf 18:1]

Transliteration: Alhamdu lillahi allathee anzala AAalaAAabdihi alkitaba walam yajAAal lahu AAiwajan

I praise, thank, and repent to Him and ask for His forgiveness. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, Alone; He has no partner. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger, the most fearful and pious of people to his Lord, and I ask Him to bless him, his family, his companions and his followers, and those who followed them in truth until the Day of Judgment.

Ramadan is the month when the Quran was revealed {The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’ân, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong).} [Surat Al-Baqarah 2:185].

Transliteration: Shahru ramadana allathee onzila feehi alquranu hudan lilnnasi wabayyinatin mina alhuda waalfurqani

Gabriel was studying the Quran with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Speaking about the Quran in Ramadan is suitable and particular, especially with the embarking of people upon it.

Some Virtues of the Quran

1 - It is guidance: The Quran is described as {a guidance to those who are Al-Muttaqûn [the pious believers of Islamic Monotheism who fear Allâh much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allâh much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)].} [Surat Al-Baqarah 2:2];

Transliteration: hudan lilmuttaqeena

i.e. they are guided by its verses and meanings to get them out from the darkness of polytheism, ignorance and sins into the light of monotheism, knowledge and obedience. They are guided by it to produce goodness in this worldly life and the Hereafter. Allah Almighty has said: {Verily, this Qur’ân guides to that which is most just and right and gives glad tidings to the believers (in the Oneness of Allâh and His Messenger, Muhammad), who work deeds of righteousness, that they shall have a great reward (Paradise).} [Surat Al-Isrâ’ 17:9]

Transliteration: Inna hatha alqurana yahdee lillatee hiya aqwamu wayubashshiru almumineena allatheena yaAAmaloona alssalihati anna lahum ajran kabeeran

2 - It contains the greatest examples, the most eloquent lessons and the best of stories. Allah Almighty has said: {We relate unto you (Muhammad) the best of stories through Our Revelations unto you, of this Qur’ân. And before this (i.e. before the coming of Divine Revelation to you), you were among those who knew nothing about it (the Qur’ân).} [Surat Yûsuf 12:3].

Transliteration: Nahnu naqussu AAalayka ahsana alqasasi bima awhayna ilayka hathaalqurana wain kunta min qablihi lamina alghafileena

3 - It is a healing, as Allah Almighty has said: {O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord (i.e. the Qur’ân, enjoining all that is good and forbidding all that is evil), and a healing for that (disease of ignorance, doubt, hypocrisy and differences) which is in your breasts, - a guidance and a mercy (explaining lawful and unlawful things) for the believers.} [Surat Yûnus 10:57]

Transliteration: Ya ayyuha alnnasu qad jaatkum mawAAithatun min rabbikum washifaon lima fee alssudoori wahudan warahmatun lilmumineena

It is a healing for breasts from suspicion, doubts and diseases that kill both hearts and bodies. This healing, however, is of benefit only for the believers as Allah Almighty has said: {And We send down of the Qur’ân that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe (in Islâmic Monotheism and act on it), and it increases the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers) nothing but loss.} [Surat Al-Isrâ’ 17:82]

Transliteration: Wanunazzilu mina alqurani ma huwa shifaon warahmatun lilmumineena walayazeedu alththalimeena illa khasaran

and {Say: “It is for those who believe, a guide and a healing.} [Surat Fussilat 41:44] [See the interpretation of Ibn Kathîr 2/256].

Transliteration: qul huwa lillatheena amanoo hudan washifaon

4 - It has resolved most of the disputes between the Jews and the Christians in many of their matters, history and news, such as their dispute about Jesus and his mother, peace be upon them, and their dispute in many of their prophets.

Allah Almighty has said: {Verily, this Qur’ân narrates to the Children of Israel most of that in which they differ. (76) And truly, it (this Qur’ân) is a guide and a mercy for the believers} [Surat An-Naml 27:76-77] [See The interpretation of Ibn Kathîr 3/795]

Transliteration: Inna hatha alqurana yaqussu AAalabanee israeela akthara allathee hum feehi yakhtalifoona (76) Wainnahu lahudan warahmatun lilmumineena

If the People of the Scripture had understood, they would have received their history and the news of their ancestors from this book that {Falsehood cannot come to it from before it or behind it} [Surat Fussilat 41:42]

Transliteration: La yateehi albatilu min bayni yadayhi wala min khalfihi

But, how the People of the Scripture do that while many of the believers have forsaken their book and are following the Jews and the Christians to the letter?

The believer in this Book has from the true news that neither the Jews nor the Christians have about their religion which a lot of its facts and news have been forged by the bad rabbis and the lying monks.

5 - The Great Quran contains many of the world’s sciences, explicitly, implicitly, by hint or signally. The scientific research is still reaching modern and important information, mentioned in the Quran long centuries ago in Humanities, Zoology, Botany, Geosciences, Marine sciences, Space sciences and astronomy, and cosmic and terrestrial phenomena, the thin that has led many infidel researchers to be guided and become believers. Allah Almighty has said: {And We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur’an) as an exposition of everything,} [Surat An-Nahl 16:89]

Transliteration: wanazzalna AAalayka alkitaba tibyanan likulli shayin

and He has said, {We have neglected nothing in the Book} [Surat Al-An’âm 6:38].

Transliteration: ma farratna fee alkitabi min shayin

Whatever people need to reform their world and their afterlife is found in the Quran as indicated by these two verses. However, this does not mean that to be satisfied with the Quran and do without the Sunnah, because this who follows the Quran and acts according to it must take the Sunnah into account and act according to it as well. The Quran referrers to the Sunnah in many issues as in the words of Allah Almighty: {And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad) gives you, take it; and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it).} [Surat Al-Hashr 59:7]

Transliteration: wamaatakumu alrrasoolu fakhuthoohu wamanahakum AAanhu faintahoo

and {He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad), has indeed obeyed Allâh} [Surat An-Nisâ’ 4:80]

Transliteration: Man yutiAAi alrrasoola faqad ataAAa Allaha

Allah Almighty has showed that the one who loves Him must follow His Messenger as indicated in His saying: {Say (O Muhammad to mankind): “If you (really) love Allâh then follow me (i.e. accept Islâmic Monotheism, follow the Qur’ân and the Sunnah), Allâh will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”} [Surat Âl-’Imrân 3:31]

Transliteration: Qul in kuntum tuhibboona Allaha faittabiAAoonee yuhbibkumu Allahu wayaghfir lakum thunoobakum waAllahu ghafoorun raheemun

Following the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, is represented in taking his Sunnah into account and acting according to it.
6 - The Quran is distinguished by a character that is clear for everyone: its easy words to utter as well as its clear meanings, as Allah Almighty has said, {And We have indeed made the Qur’ân easy to understand and remember; then is there anyone who will remember (or receive admonition)?} [Surat Al-Qamar 54:17]

Transliteration: Walaqad yassarna alqurana lilththikri fahal min muddakirin

Ibn Kathîr, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “That means We have facilitated its words and meaning for whoever want that, in order for people to remember.” [The Interpretation of Ibn Kathîr: 4/411] Mujahid said, “We have made it easy to read.” [The Interpretation of At-Tabary: 27/96] As-Sady said, “We have facilitated its reciting for the tongues.” [The Interpretation of Ibn Kathîr 4/411] It is narrated that Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, said, “Unless Allah has eased it for the tongues of people, no one ever could have talked with the words of Allah, Glorified and Exalted.” [The Interpretation of Ibn Kathîr 4/411]

Allah Almighty has said, {So We have made this (the Qur’ân) easy in your own tongue (O Muhammad), only that you may give glad tidings to the Muttaqûn (the pious - See V.2:2), and warn with it the Ludd (most quarrelsome) people.} [Surat Maryam 19:97]

Transliteration: Fainnama yassarnahu bilisanika litubashshira bihi almuttaqeena watunthira bihi qawman luddan

(Ludd: The people who don’t believe in Allâh’s Oneness and His Prophet’s message and argue about everything that Allâh has ordained.)

This is one of the greatest verses and clearest evidences about the greatness and wondrous nature of the Quran. Memorizing and mastering it are easier than all other words. Reciting it is facilitated. Some non-Arabs can read it without knowing the Arabic language. Even some illiterate cannot read any other thing than it.

As for the meaning: every person grasps a part according to his comprehending and understanding. An ordinary person understands it in general, a student grasps from it according to the capacity of his knowledge and a scholar dives in its endless meanings to extract sciences and benefits. He may spend the whole life in one chapter or verse without finishing its benefits and meanings.

It is said that the Sheikh of Islam Abu Ismail Al-Harawy, may Allah have mercy on him, had held for the interpretation of {Verily, those for whom the good has preceded from Us, they will be removed far therefrom (Hell) [e.g. ‘Îsâ (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary); ‘Uzair (Ezra)].} [Surat Al-Anbiyâ’ 21:101]

three hundred and sixty councils [Biographies by Az-Zahabi 18/514]

The scholars’ writings in one chapter or verse are abundant and famous due to the richness of the meanings and knowledge contained in such a great Book.

Why has the Quran been revealed?

The greatest reason of revelation is: to understand its meaning, ponder over its verses and acting according to it, as Allah Almighty has said, {(This is) a Book (the Qur’ân) which We have sent down to you, full of blessings, that they may ponder over its Verses, and that men of understanding may remember} [Surat Sad 38:29],

Transliteration: Kitabun anzalnahu ilayka mubarakun liyaddabbaroo ayatihi waliyatathakkara oloo alalbabi

and He has also said: {And indeed We have distributed it (rain or water) amongst them in order that they may remember (the Grace of Allâh,)} [Surat Al-Furqan 25:50],

Transliteration: Walaqad sarrafnahu baynahum liyaththakkaroo

and {Do they not then consider the Qur’ân carefully? Had it been from other than Allâh, they would surely have found therein many a contradiction.} [Surat An-Nisâ’ 4:82],

Transliteration: Afala yatadabbaroona alqurana walaw kana min AAindi ghayri Allahi lawajadoo feehi ikhtilafan katheeran

and {Do they not then think deeply in the Qur’ân, or are their hearts locked up (from understanding it)?} [Surat Muhammad 47:24].

Transliteration: Afala yatadabbaroona alqurana am AAala quloobin aqfaluha

The more the slave of Allah ponders over its verses, the more benefit he will win, and the more pious and believing he will become.

Therefore, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was the most pious, submissive and fearing of Allah because he was the most pondering over the words of Allah Almighty. Ibn Mas’ûd, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to me, “Recite from the Quran for me” I said, O Messenger of Allah, shall I recite for you while it has been revealed to you. He said, “I like to listen to it from others”. He said, so I recited Surat An-Nisâ’ til I reached {How (will it be) then, when We bring from each nation a witness and We bring you (O Muhammad) as a witness against these people?} [Surat An-Nisâ’ 4:41]

Transliteration: Fakayfa itha jina min kulli ommatin bishaheedin wajina bika AAala haolai shaheedan

I raised my head or a man pushed me on my side so I raised my head, and I saw his tears were overflowing” [Reported by Al-Bukhari 5505 and Muslim: 800]

There is no doubt that pondering over and benefiting from the Quran lead to asceticism in this worldly life, and the desire for the Hereafter. Al-Hassan, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “O son of Adam, by Allah, if you recite the Quran and then you believe in it, your sadness in this life will be long, your fear in this world will be severe and your tear in this life will be overflowing” [Nuzhat Al-Fudalâ’ (the Recreation of the Noble): 1/448]

How many villains have been guided by this Quran! The Quran has taken them from the state of misery to happiness, from going astray to guidance and from Hellfire to Paradise.

Some people kept away from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, were hostile to him and fought against him. Just a short time after listening to the Quran, they entered in the religion of Allah in crowds. The same happened with the successors. There is a lot of such famous news.

One of the strange things which are narrated about this is the story of the repentance of the leading Imam Al-Fudhayl Ibn Aiyadh, may Allah have mercy on him. He was a highwayman. The reason of his repentance was that he loved a slave girl. While he was climbing a wall for her he heard a man reciting the words of Allah Almighty: {Has not the time come for the hearts of those who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism) to be affected by Allâh’s Reminder (this Qur’ân), and that which has been revealed of the truth,} [Surat Al-Hadîd 57:16]

Transliteration: Alam yani lillatheena amanoo an takhshaAAa quloobuhum lithikri Allahi wama nazala mina alhaqqi

Upon hearing it he said: Yes, O Lord! It is the time. So he returned. During that same night he was lodged to some ruins where there was a caravan. Some said: let’s leave. Others said: wait till the morning as Fudhayl is on this way and he may rob us. He said: I thought and said “I spend nights performing acts of disobedience while some Muslims are afraid of me. I think that Allah has not led me here but only for that I would be deterred. O Allah, I repent to you and I have made my repentance close to the Sacred House.” [Nuzhat Al-Fudalâ’: 2/6001]

May Allah have mercy on Al-Fudayl Ibn Aiyadh; he was guided by a verse from the Book of Allah Almighty to the way of guidance so he became a qualified worshipper and a working scholar. So can we be affected by the Quran while we are reciting and listening to it on these days?

Do the unbelievers and disobedient benefit from the Quran?

The unbelievers do not benefit from the Quran because of their turning away from and denying it.

As for the disobedient and wicked ones, they are less benefitting from it due deserting it and their engagement in their lustrous desires. Allah Almighty has said {And when you (Muhammad) recite the Qur’ân, We put between you and those who believe not in the Hereafter, an invisible vei (or screen their hearts, so they hear or understand it not). (45). And We have put coverings over their hearts lest they should understand it (the Qur’ân), and in their ears deafness. And when you make mention of your Lord Alone [Lâ ilâha illallâh (none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh) Islâmic Monotheism] in the Qur’ân, they turn on their backs, fleeing in extreme dislike} [Surat Al-Isrâ’ 17:45-46]

Transliteration: Waitha qarata alqurana jaAAalna baynaka wabayna allatheena la yuminoona bialakhirati hijaban mastooran (45) WajaAAalna AAalaquloobihim akinnatan an yafqahoohu wafee athanihim waqran waitha thakarta rabbaka fee alqurani wahdahu wallaw AAala adbarihim nufooran

This is the case of disbelievers and hypocrites who are prevented from benefitting from it.

As for the disobedient, they are satisfied by other than it till they have deserted it, so the Prophet’s complain to Allah Almighty against them is great, as shown in the words of Allah Almighty: {And the Messenger (Muhammad) will say: O my Lord! Verily, my people deserted this Qur’ân (neither listened to it, nor acted on its laws and teachings).} [Surat Al-Furqân 25:30]

Transliteration: Waqala alrrasoolu ya rabbi inna qawmee ittakhathoo hatha alqurana mahjooran

Ibn Kathîr, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “they have deserted it others such as poetry, speech, amusement, talk or ways.” [The Interpretation of Ibn Kathîr 3/507].

How many people there are nowadays who are fond of songs and music that they do not part with listening to them. They have deserted the words of Allah that they cannot bear listening to it. However, the love of the Quran and the love of songs do not gather in one heart.

There are houses whose nights and days are spent in listening to songs and music; that their sounds penetrate through the walls; in exaggeration of performing sins in public and in disobedience.

There are house that are empty from the remembrance of the Most Merciful while they are noisy with the trumpets of devils (i.e. music) to the extent that the devils spread in all its corners and occupy the hearts of their dwellers. Thus they have driven them away from the way of guidance and right conduct to the way of corruption and sin. So, it was widespread among them the psychological diseases, agitated emotions and disturbing dreams, they have become as Allah Almighty have said about them: {Shaitân (Satan) has overpowered them. So he has made them forget the remembrance of Allâh. They are the party of Shaitân (Satan). Verily, it is the party of Shaitan (Satan) that will be the losers!} [Surat Al-Mujâdilah 58:19]

Transliteration: Istahwatha AAalayhimu alshshaytanu faansahum thikra Allahi olaika hizbu alshshaytani ala inna hizba alshshaytani humu alkhasiroona

Such people may have bad ends to their lives, and, upon their death, they would not be able to utter the testimony of faith. There have been a lot of famous stories about that.

The market of songs and music is not widespread and the singers have not been so many but of the large number of listeners. There is no power or strength except in Allah the All-Mighty, the All-wise.

The joy of the people of belief and Quran when meeting with their Lord is indescribable. They have dignified the Book of Allah Glorified and Exalted, so Allah has granted them the good end. They increased reciting, pondering over and acting upon it, so the angels welcome them in a majestic procession. They give them the glad tidings of the satisfaction of Allah and the Heavens. So they are seen while dying in serenity and tranquility.

While the imam, reciter, hadith scholar, and jurist Abu Bakr Ibn Aiyyash, may Allah have mercy on him, was dying, his sister was weeping. He said to her, “Why are you crying? Look at that corner. Your brother has finished reciting the Quran eighteen thousands time there.” [Nuzhat Al-Fudalâ’: 675]

Is this equal to the one who has listened to thousands of songs and spent thousands of hours in disobedience? No, by Allah, they are not equal.

Unfortunately, children are brought up on songs and music; and one prides themselves on that just as the people of the Quran are proud of their children for their memorizing of the Quran!! It is a disaster to raise the people of the Quran on music, which is the devil’s pipe. It is more worthy of, rather it is a must to raise them on the Words of Allah. The Quran was revealed in Ramadan, so it is a chance to revive our mosques and houses with the Words of Allah Almighty, especially as people embark upon the Quran.

Fasting people should not leave anything in their houses that crowd with the Quran, especially if it is contradictory to it as the many satellite and TV programs that evil people become active in broadcasting and beautifying in Ramadan to attract the spectators. These programs are still crowding with the Quran, remembrances and all other acts of worship in this great month.

I Ask Allah the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful to encompass us with His Grace, to reform both our inward and outward appearance, and to accept us as worshippers, He is All Hearer and Responsive. And all the praises and thanks be to Allâh, the Lord of the ‘Alamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists).
