There is nothing wrong with gathering to recite the Holy Qur'an

Question:

My friends and I get together one night a week to recite a few verses of the Book of Allah, so as to learn how to recite the Qur'an, then after that we talk about various things. But we heard that it is not permissible to gather to recite Qur'an and that is only permissible for the purpose of memorization. Is this true?

Answer:

Praise be to Allah.

There is nothing wrong with gathering to recite and study the Qur'an and to memorize it and to learn about Islam, because the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: «No people gather in one of the houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it among themselves, but tranquility descends upon them, mercy overshadows them, the angels gather around them, and Allah mentions them to those who are with Him» (Narrated by Imam Muslim in his Saheeh).

And it is proven that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to review the Qur'an with Jibreel (peace be upon him) and study it with him every night in Ramadan.

And he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) often used to sit with his Companions, reciting the Qur'an to them, and reminding them of Allah, and sometimes he would tell one of his Companions to recite some Qur'an to him.

All of what we have mentioned above clearly indicates that it is prescribed in Islam to gather to listen to the Qur'an, study it, revise it, and discuss issues of knowledge. And Allah is the source of strength. End quote.
