The ruling of singing
By His Eminence Sheikh Abdul-Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz

Listening to songs is forbidden and an evil action. It is among the reasons of the sickness and hardness of hearts. In addition, it hinders hearts from the remembrance of Allah and from praying. Most of the scholars have interpreted the verse, in which Allah says, {And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.)} [Surat Luqmân 31:6]

Transliteration:  Wamina alnnasi man yashtaree lahwa alhadeethi

as referring to “singing”. ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ûd, may Allah be pleased with him, swore that the idle talk is singing. If singing is accompanied by an instrument of amusements, such as the rebeck, the lute, the violin, and the drums, its prohibition becomes severer. Some of the scholars mentioned that singing with an instrument of amusement is forbidden by consensus. That is why one should beware of that. It is narrated that the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “There will be some people among my nation who will regard fornication, wearing of silk (for men), drinking of intoxicants and stringed instruments as lawful.” [Reported By Al-Bukhari]

«ليكونن من أمتي أقوام يستحلون الحر والحرير والخمر والمعازف» صحيح البخاري

Fornication is the forbidden private part, which refers to committing adultery. Stringed instruments refer to the songs and the musical instruments.

I recommend you to listen to the radio station of the Holy Qur’an and the program entitled “A light on the way” as they have great benefits. They will keep you busy from listening to songs and musical instruments. In weddings, it is lawful to beat on the tambourine along with the ordinary singing, which does not include a call to a forbidden matter nor a praise of it. This can be at some time of the night and for women only. That is in order to make the marriage publicized and to distinguish between lawful marriages and unlawful affairs. The authentic Sunnah narrated that the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, allowed this.

It is not lawful to beat on drums at weddings, however, only tambourine is allowed. It is not permitted to use the loudspeaker for publicizing the marriage. In addition, the usual songs, which are usually said in weddings, are not lawful as they lead to serious temptation, evil consequences and they harm the Muslims. Moreover, it is not permissible to spend much time at weddings but it is enough to stay for a little time till the marriage is publicized. This is because extending the time of the wedding may lead to wasting the Fajr Prayer (dawn) and delaying it after its fixed due time. This is one of the major prohibited acts and among the acts of the hypocrites.

The following are the proofs of the prohibition of singing from the sayings of the righteous ancestors, may Allah be pleased with all of them.
Abû Bakr As-Siddîq, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “Singing and playing (on a musical instrument) are the flute of the Satan.”

Imam Mâlik ibn Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “Singing is only practiced by the defiantly disobedient. Those who follow Imam As-Shafi’i liken singing to falsehood.”

Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “Singing seeds hypocrisy in the heart. That is why I dislike it.”

The companions of Imam Abû Hanîfah, may Allah have mercy on them, said, “Listening to songs is a matter of disobedience.”

‘Umar ibn ‘Abdul ‘Azîz, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “Singing starts by Satan and its punishment is the wrath of the Compassionate.”

Imam Al-Qurtubi said, “Singing is forbidden by the Qur’an and Sunnah.”

Imam ibn As-Salâh said, “Singing with an instrument is forbidden by consensus.”

The ruling of photography (photos, drawings and statues)
By His Eminence Sheikh Abdul-Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz

The question, what is your opinion of photography that spread everywhere and people became occupied with it?

The answer: all the praises and thanks be to Allah Alone, and prayers and peace of Allah be upon the Prophet after which there is no other prophet.

There are many Hadiths narrated from the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, in the authentic books and Hadith collections. These Hadiths indicate the prohibition of picturing every animate creature whether it is a human being or other than that. In addition, he ordered tearing the covers of these Statues. These Hadiths also indicate the order of effacing them and cursing their makers. They imply that they are the most tortured people on the Day of Resurrection. The following are many authentic Hadiths regarding this matter and some sayings of the scholars. In addition, I will show the correct ruling of this issue, Allah willing.

In the two Authentic Books of Hadith (Al-Bukhari and Muslim), Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated from the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, that he has said, “Allah Almighty has said, ‘And who is more unjust than those who try to create the likeness of My creation? Let them create an atom, or let them create a wheat grain, or let them create a barley grain.” [As reported by Muslim]

«ومن أظلم ممن ذهب يخلق خلقاً كخلقي، فليخلقوا ذرة، أو ليخلقوا حبة، أو ليخلقوا شعيرة» رواه مسلم

In the two authentic Books, too; it is narrated on the authority of Abû Sa’îd, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “The most severely punished of people on the Day of Resurrection will be those who try to make the like of the creation of Allah.”

«إن أشد الناس عذاباً يوم القيامة المصورون» متفق عليه

Ibn ‘Umar, May Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Those who make these pictures will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them, ‘make alive what you have created’.” [As reported by Al-Bukhâri]

«إن الذين يصنعون هذه الصور يعذبون يوم القيامة يقال لهم أحيوا ما خلقتم» رواه البخاري

Al-Bukhâri reported in his authentic book that Abû Juhaifah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, forbade the acceptance of the price of a dog or blood, and also forbade the profession of tattooing, getting tattooed and receiving or giving usury, and cursed the picture-makers.

«أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم نهى عن ثمن الدم، ثمن الكلب وكسب الغي، ولعن أكل الربا وموكله، والواشمة والمستوشمة والمصور» رواه البخاري

Ibn ‘Abbâs, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, saying, ‘Whoever made pictures in this life, will be charged with breathing life into them and he will not be able to do so.” [Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim]

«من صور صورة في الدنيا كلف أن ينفخ فيها الروح، وليس بنافخ» متفق عليه

Imam Muslim reported that Sa’îd ibn Abû Al-Hassan said, “A man came to ibn ‘Abbâs and said, “I am a creator of these picture. So, give me your advisory opinion regarding this matter! Ibn Abbas said, come near to me, and so he did. He said again, “Come nearer to me,” and the man did. Then ibn ‘Abbâs put his hand on the head of the man and said, “I will tell you what I heard from the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, “Every picture maker is in the Fire. A soul will be placed in every picture made by him and it will punish him in the Hellfire. Ibn Abbas then said, “If it is inevitable to you, you can create pictures of a tree or any inanimate creature.”

The ruling of shaving beards
By Sheikh Mohamed ibn Salih Al-’Uthaymin

Shaving the beard is forbidden, for it is a matter of disobedience to the order of the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Let your beards grow and trim your moustaches.” [Reported by Ahmed and its chain of transmission is declared authentic by Ahmed Shaker]

«أعفوا اللحى وحفوا الشواب» رواه احمد وصحح اسناده احمد شاكر

Moreover, this is a deviation from the guidance of the Messengers of Allah to the imitation of polytheists and Magi (fire-worshipping men). The edge of the beard, as stated by the language scholars, is the hair of the face, the two jawbones, the chin, and the cheeks. This means that the hair in these mentioned parts is considered from the beard. Taking anything from the beard is included in this sin because the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “let your beards grow…”, “let your beards rise…”, “let your beards increase...”, and “let your beards develop…”

This indicates that it is not permissible to remove any part from the beard. As sins vary, shaving the beard is among the sins. It is a greater sin than removing a part from it.

The ruling of Isbâl “dragging the garment along the ground” for men
By Sheikh Mohamed ibn Salih Al-’Uthaymin

Whoever let fall his garment out of vanity, his punishment is that Allah will neither look upon him on the Day of Resurrection, nor will speak to him, nor will He purify him, and he will have a painful punishment. If he did not do this with an intention of vanity, his punishment will be a torture to the covered part of the heel in Hellfire.

The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “There are three kinds of people that Allah will neither speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor look upon them, nor will He purify them. They shall have a painful torment. (These people are) Al-Musbil (the one dragging his lower garment), the one who is used to reminding people of his generosity towards them, and the one who sells his goods through false swearing.” [Reported by Muslim]

«ثلاثة لا يكلمهم الله يوم القيامة ولا ينظر إليهم ولا يزكيهم ولهم عذاب أليم: المسبل والمنان والمنفق سلعته بالحلف الكاذب» رواه مسلم

He has also said, “On the Day of Judgment, Allah will not look at the person who drags his garment with pride and arrogance.” [Agreed upon]

«من جر ثوبه خيلاء لم ينظر الله إليه يوم القيامة» متفق عليه

This is the case with the one who drags his garment out of vanity and arrogance. As for those who do not do this with an intention of vanity, Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “What is below the ankles of a lower garment is condemned to the Hellfire.” [Reported by Al-Bukhâri]

«ما أسفل الكعبين من الإزار ففي النار» رواه البخاري

In this Hadith, the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, did not restrict the punishment to vanity as mentioned in the Hadith before it. This is because Abu Sa’îd Al-Khudri, may Allah be please with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “There is no sin for the believer to hold up his lower garment half way to the leg.” Or that he has said, “He is guilty of no sin if they are up to the ankles. That which is below the ankles is in Hellfire. On the Day of judgment, Allah will not look at the one who allows his lower garment to trail out of vanity.” [Authenticated by Al-Albani]

«إزرة المؤمن إلى نصف الساق ولا حرج» أو قال: «لا جناح عليه فيما بينه وبين الكعبين وما كان أسفل من ذلك فهو في النار ومن جر إزاره بطراً لم ينظر الله إليه يوم القيامة» صححه الألباني

This is because the two sins and punishments are different from each other. When the ruling and the reason are different, it is declined to attribute the absolute to the restricted because this will be a contradiction. However, those who argued by the Hadith of Abû Bakr, he should know that he does not have the right of such argument for two reasons.

Firstly, Abû Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “A half of my garment hangs low if I does not take care of it.” This means that he, may Allah be pleased with him, did not do such thing as a sign of pride and vanity. On the contrary, his garment was dragged low unintentionally and he took care of that. But as for those who claim that dragging their garments is not intended to be a sign of vanity, they are told that if they do this not as a sign of vanity, they will be tortured for what is dragged low with no intention of pride. On the other hand, if you do this with pride and arrogance, your torture will be greater than that: Allah will neither speak to you on the Day of Resurrection, nor look upon you, nor will He purify you, and you shall have a painful punishment.

The Second reason is that the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, commended Abû Bakr who is not of those who do that as a sign of vanity. Did
anyone of those get such recommendation and testimony?

We can say that Satan tempts some people to follow the allegorical texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah in order to justify what they did. And Allah guides whom He wills to a straight path.

The ruling of smoking
By Sheikh Mohamed ibn Salih Al-’Uthaymin

I hope that your Eminence clarifies the ruling of smoking cigarettes and hookah, supporting your answer with proofs.
Smoking cigarettes and hookah is forbidden, as Allah Almighty says, {And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allâh is Most Merciful to you.} [Surat Al-Nisâ’ 4 29]

Transliteration: wala taqtuloo anfusakum inna Allaha kana bikum raheeman

And the words of Allah Almighty, {and do not throw yourselves into destruction (by not spending your wealth in the Cause of Allâh),} [Surat Al-Baqarah 2:195]

Transliteration: wala tulqoo biaydeekum ila alttahlukati

Medically, it is proved that smoking these things are harmful. If so, it is forbidden. Another proof is the verse, in which Allah says, {And give not unto the foolish your property which Allâh has made a means of support for you,} [Surat Al-Nisâ’ 4:5]

Transliteration: Wala tutoo alssufahaa amwalakumu allatee jaAAala Allahu lakum qiyaman

Allah forbade us from giving our property to the weak-minded because they waste and misuse it. There is no doubt that wasting money to buy cigarettes and hookah is a misuse of it; and that is why it is prohibited. There is, in addition, a Hadith that the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, forbade us from wasting money. He has also said, “It is not allowed to do harm or to allow being harmed.” [Sahih Al-Albani]

«لا ضرر ولا ضرار» صحيح الألباني

Smoking such things is harmful and man may be obsessed by them to the extent that he will be unable to bear losing them and he will find his breast tight. Therefore, he indulged himself in harmful things, which he was not in need for.

Warning against travelling to the countries of the disbelievers and its danger on the creed and morals
By His Eminence Sheikh Abdul-Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz

All the praises and thanks be to Allah Alone, and prayers and peace of Allah be upon the Prophet after which there is no other prophet, our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his family, companions, and followers till the Day of Judgment.

Allah has bestowed many blessings upon this nation and singled it out with unique advantages. In addition, He has made it [true believers in Islamic Monotheism, and real followers of Prophet Muhammad) and his Sunnah] the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind; as it enjoins Al-Ma’rûf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam has ordained) and forbids Al-Munkar (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden), and believes in Allah.

The greatest one among these blessings is the blessing of Islam, which Allah has approved for His slaves as a religion and a way of life. It is the religion by which Allah has completed His favor upon His slaves and perfected the religion for them. Allah says, {This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islâm as your religion.} [Surat Al-Mâ’idah 5:3]

«الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الإِسْلاَمَ دِيناً» المائدة:3

Transliteration:alyawma akmaltu lakum deenakum waatmamtu AAalaykum niAAmatee waradeetu lakumu alislama deenan

The enemies of Islam have envied Muslims for this great blessing. That is why their hearts became filled with bitter feelings and they wished if they could deprive Muslims of such blessing or take them away from it. In describing the hostility that lies in their hearts, Allah Almighty says, {They wish that you reject Faith, as they have rejected (Faith), and thus that you all become equal (like one another).} [Surat An-Nisâ’ 4: 89]

Transliteration: Waddoo law takfuroona kama kafaroo fatakoonoona sawaan

And Allah Amighty says, {O you who believe! Take not as (your) Bitânah (advisors, consultants, protectors, helpers, friends) those outside your religion (pagans, Jews, Christians, and hypocrites) since they will not fail to do their best to corrupt you. They desire to harm you severely. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, but what their breasts conceal is far worse. Indeed We have made plain to you the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses) if you understand.} [Surat Âl-’Imrân 3:118]

Transliteration: Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo la tattakhithoo bitanatan min doonikum la yaloonakum khabalan waddoo ma AAanittum qad badati albaghdao min afwahihim wama tukhfee sudooruhum akbaru qad bayyanna lakumu alayati in kuntum taAAqiloona

Allah Glorified and Exalted also says, {Should they gain the upper hand over you, they would behave to you as enemies, and stretch forth their hands and their tongues against you with evil, and they desire that you should disbelieve.} [Surat Al-Mumtahanah 60:2]

Transliteration: In yathqafookum yakoonoo lakam aAAdaan wayabsutoo ilaykum aydiyahum waalsinatahum bialssooi wawaddoo law takfuroona

Allah, Glory be to Him, says, {And they will never cease fighting you until they turn you back from your religion (Islâmic Monotheism) if they can.} [Surat Al-Baqarah 2:217]

Transliteration: wala yazaloona yuqatiloonakum hatta yaruddookum AAan deenikum ini istataAAoo

The verses that refer to the hostility of the disbelievers towards the Muslims are numerous.
What is meant by these verses is that they spare no effort nor leave any way that may lead them to achieving their purposes and objectives to defame Muslims. They have many methods as well as hidden and apparent means such as what is popular these days for the institutions of travelling and tourism. Such institutions circulate advertisement fliers including an invitation to the sons of this country to spend the summer holiday in Europe and America on the pretext of learning English language. These institutions have put a comprehensive program for the schedule of the traveler. This program includes many sections such as:

1- Choosing a disbeliever English family for the student to stay with them in spite of the numerous dangers.

2- Attending concerts, theatres and theatrical performances in the city where he settles.

3- Visiting the places of dancing and amusement.

4- One of the amusement centers existing in one of the English cities mentioned the following:

a. Working towards corrupting Muslim youth and deviating them from the right path.

b- Corrupting morals and falling in vices through facilitating the means of corruption and making it within their reach.

c- Arousing suspicion around the creed of the Muslim.

d- Developing the spirit of admiration and overwhelming in the Muslim to the western civilization.

e- The acquiring of the Muslim of most of the traditions and bad habits of the west

f- Being used to disregarding religion and ignoring its teachings and orders.

g- Mobilizing the Muslim youth to be among the callers to westernization in their countries after their return from this journey and after absorbing the notions, customs and lifestyles of the west.

And there are other serious purposes and objectives which the enemies of Islam strive hard to achieve by various ways and methods whether apparent or hidden. They may conceal themselves and work under Arabic names and patriotic institutions as a matter of devotion in plotting. In addition, they do this to delude Muslims not to see their evil intentions sought in the countries of Muslims. That is why I warn my Muslim brothers in this country and in all the countries of Muslims not to be deceived by such fliers nor to be influenced by them. I call them, in addition, to take care and not to respond to any of these fliers, as they are a dangerous poison. They are plots designed by the enemies of Islam and they intend to dissuade Muslims from their religion and to arouse doubts concerning their creed. Moreover, they intend to sow the seeds of dissention among them as Allah mentioned in His Noble Qur’an. Allah Almighty says, {Never will the Jews nor the Christians be pleased with you (O Muhammad) till you follow their religion.} [Surat Al-Baqarah 2:120]

«وَلَن تَرْضَى عَنكَ الْيَهُودُ وَلاَ النَّصَارَى حَتَّى تَتَّبِعَ مِلَّتَهُمْ» البقرة: 120

Transliteration: Walan tarda AAanka alyahoodu wala alnnasara hatta tattabiAAa millatahum

I advise the guardians of the students to take care of their sons and not to respond to their request to travel abroad. That is because it has harms and causes of evil for their religion and morals. Their countries, praise be to Allah, are many and they can dispense with them. Thus, they may achieve what is ought and guarantee to our youth the safety against dangers, troubles, evil consequences and difficulties to which they are exposed in the foreign countries.
I ask Allah Glorified and Exalted to protect our countries and all the countries of Muslims and to protect their sons against every evil and harm. I ask Allah to guard them against the plots of the enemies and their deception. I ask Him to throw back their deception unto them. I ask Him Almighty to help our rulers in eliminating all these harmful propaganda and dangerous advertisement. I ask Him to help them achieve everything that suits peoples and countries. He is the Master of this and the Omnipotent. Prayers and peace of Allah be upon His slave and Messenger, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon all his family, his companions, and his followers till the Day of Judgment.

An advice from the heart to every jealous father believing in Allah

The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “No one is more jealous than Allah when He sees His male and female slaves commit adultery.” [Agreed upon]

«لا أحد أغير من الله يزني عبده أو تزني أمته» متفق عليه

There is no doubt that all people are slaves of Allah. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has said, “Are you surprised at the jealousy of Sa’d of his honor? By Allah, I am more jealous of my honor than he is, and Allah is more jealous than I am. Because of His jealousy, Allah has prohibited Al-Fawâhish (shameful sins, illegal sexual intercourse) whether committed openly or secretly.”

«أتعجبون من غيرة سعد ؟ فوالله ! لأنا أغير منه . والله أغير مني . من أجل غيرة الله حرم الفواحش ما ظهر منها وما بطن» صحيح مسلم

Jealousy is the sense of honor, fervor, getting chivalrous with unmarriageable female relatives, and protecting them from the hands of abusers and the eyes of beholders.

The person who is not jealous about his family is the cuckold who admits obscenity to his family. It is narrated that he will not enter Paradise. There is no doubt that every pious believer is jealous about his wife, daughters, and all of his relatives. Among the effects of this jealousy is that he observes them and prevents them from attending the places where there is intermixing between men and women. In addition, he prevents them from the communities where there is over crowdedness and mingling. This is because there are many evil and bad persons in these places where there would be much joking, molestation, flirtation, and uttering vile words that stir instincts and incites the weak-believing persons to commit crimes and immoralities. How many kidnapping cases, rendezvous, as well as hidden and apparent talks took place in market places, while the parents were inattentive to this and trusting their daughters! Such things never crossed their minds to the extent that they never imagined a tenth from what happened!

On the contrary, the strict and jealous person should accompany his unmarriageable female relatives in order to observe, protect, and keep them away from the means of corruption, from watching dissolute movies and seductive pictures and from listening to shameless and impudent songs that excite instincts and incite them to do what is prohibited. In addition, he should always accompany them to the market places, hospitals, their way to schools [until they enter the class], when they leave the schools [until they reach the bus], in wedding halls, and homes… etc. This is in order to ensure their safety from any assault against them, from their indulgence, and from being too soft in speech. Woman has weak character and strong lust that her resistance may be weakened. It is necessary to observe and totally protect women, especially in this age when corruption is spread, adultery is increased and the feeling of the religious commitment in many souls is weakened. In addition, the reasons and means of desires and the satisfaction of lusts became obtainable, both inside and outside. It is obligatory for every guardian to protect his relatives and to be keen on abstaining his sons and daughters from what is indecent to prevent their souls from inclining towards prohibited acts. This will also prevent them from wishing a prohibited act when they watch or listen to what incite the soul towards committing a sin or immorality. They will avoid all the things that cause the wrath of Allah, His jealousy, and His general and specific punishment over humans. The spread of adultery is one of the causes of many incurable diseases as mentioned in Hadith and the causes of depriving people from favors, wealth, and comfort. Allah is the One whose help can be sought.
Prayers and peace of Allah be upon our Prophet, Muhammad and upon all his family and companions.
